this is a masterpost dedicated to those who want to organize themselves but are too lazy to start aka me everyday
01. organizing your schoolwork
there are so many ways to organize your papers nowadays, so itâs pretty important to find what works best for you
I personally use binders and sheet protectors for my handouts that I get at school
pros: binders keep your papers secure, you can use dividers for further organization
cons: that loud noise from opening the binder rings, can be heavy, the binder rings can mess up your papers, the plastic pockets on the inside of the binder often tears
as mentioned, to combat the tearing of papers, I use sheet protectors
if youâre not a fan of binders, a nice alternative is expandable file folders
see this video by @studyign/sareena for some more info!
pros: not as heavy as a binder, there is some organization already with the extra pockets
cons: depending on the brand, might be flimsy, the plastic pockets can tear
I currently use one of these to store all of my homework, and so far itâs worked out for me quite nicely! I would definitely recommend them
if you donât get that many papers in class but still want to hold onto them, folders are always a nice choice
pros: are lightweight, capable of holding a lot of papers
cons: can tear, papers can fall out (unless you have the kind w/ brads)
I use both folders and binders bc sometimes Iâm too lazy to open the rings of the binder oops
also, if you want to store more, it can help if you buy the folders that contain brads
psa: if you donât keep binder clips or paper clips with you, then you should bc theyâre extremely useful and will make your life easier when youâre sorting out papers
for more tips, see this masterpost by @tbhstudying/seo!
02. organizing your supplies
some of you might have a lot of stationery and pens lying around
for those that donât, itâs totally fine and you might have it better off bc you donât have to keep track of that many things ahahaha
itâs always nice to have a pen case or pouch to hold your supplies, it can really help you keep your supplies together
if youâre willing to make the investment, try the kipling 100 pens pencil case
here is a cheaper alternative
this website is also really nice, their products are super cute and they have a large variety of pen cases to choose from
when youâre organizing your supplies, itâs important to know what you need the most on a daily basis - itâs not helping you if you keep a complete set of staedtler triplus fineliners in your pen case when in reality you only use two colors every day
ask yourself: what do I need? will it be okay if I leave it behind?
if you choose to leave some supplies at home, be sure that you have a place to leave them hehe
03. organizing your desk space
okay so if youâre like me, you probably have a lot of papers and things that stay on your desk, such as stationery, extra paper, textbooks, etc.
to organize some of your pens/pencils, I recommend using a jar or cup of some sort to keep on your desk so that itâs within reach
for those extra packs of lined/graphed paper you might have, you can store it on your desk in a magazine file or in your drawer
going back to the magazine file: 11/10 would recommend
for me, I have a small desk, so I canât afford to have everything being piled on my desk - the magazine files are really nice for organizing
be sure that when youâre working, you only have the things you need on your desk! anything that isnât needed should be stored as neatly as possible
you can find different desk organizers and containers in places like target and amazon!
I hope this was helpful to you guys! I personally still struggle with organization, but over the course of my 2015-16 school year, Iâm starting to find ways to keep my things and my life together. if you have any questions, feel free to drop an ask in my inbox ^-^
- soko â(ŕšâ˘Íá´â˘Í)â
things i learned my freshman year of college 1. donât worry so much about what other people are spending their time doing. 2. social media is a lie. itâs all fake. it might seem like your friends at other schools are having the time of their lives, but itâs so easy to pretend to be happy online when in reality you are downright miserable. so just because someoneâs instagram is prettier than yours, doesnât mean their life is any happier or better. 3. itâs absolutely okay to sit by yourself at the dining hall and have a meal alone. no one will judge you for it. no one will point at you and whisper, âthereâs the girl that eats alone all the time.â i promise you that no one is looking that closely at you. the only reason they would notice is if you make it seem like youâre miserable. so go ahead, order a hamburger and a huge plate of fries, pick up a good book, and eat by yourself. i promise that no one will give a fuck. 4. if you want to sit at home and watch netflix while eating chicken tenders in bed on a friday night, then do it. donât feel obligated to go out and have a great time if you know that you would be happier just sitting at home. for a long time, i used to think that if i wasnât going out with friends or studying, i was wasting my time. but that is so not true. you need your alone time, especially when youâre in college, so donât be afraid to do the things that really make you happy â not just the things that you think will make you happy. 5. grades are important, so donât slack off. it might seem like youâre doing more work than everyone else, but if other people are getting good grades, i promise that theyâre doing just as much work as you are (no matter how many times they say âi only studied for like an hour the night before the test and i got an A!â). youâre not paying a fortune just to party and hang out with friends, so make sure youâre learning and keeping up with your schoolwork. 6. by the end of the year, you will have completely lost touch with many of your high school friends who you promised you would never stop talking to. and thatâs okay. 7. make use of the library. itâs there for a reason. find a good study spot where no one can bother you, and whenever you get there, put your phone away and actually get shit done. leave the procrastinating for your dorm room. 8. frat parties are overrated. clubbing is overrated. if you go, make sure youâre with someone you trust. but if you know that youâll have a better time just hanging out with one or two close friends or curling up in your room with a good book, then do that instead. no matter what the tv shows tell you, you wonât miss out on finding your soulmate just because you donât go to one party. 9. no one will hold your hand in college. no one is going to tell you âtake this, this, and this classâ or âstudy one chapter a night and youâll be good for the test.â you have to figure that shit out for yourself. in high school, you might have gotten away with studying for a test the night before, but if you do that in college, you will most likely not get the grade you were hoping for. unless youâre a genius, itâs just impossible. so make sure you start studying way before you think you need to. 10. do your laundry. take out your trash. make your room look nice. yes, even during finals week. itâll make you feel like more of a human being. 11. go to your professorsâ office hours. iâve found that most of the time, the professors are sitting in their office, just waiting for students to come see them during office hours. so if youâre struggling, go talk to them. and donât wait around until the week before the final. the professor will be much more willing to help you out if you go see them near the beginning of the semester. never, ever, ever be ashamed to ask for help. each time iâve asked a professor âhow can i do better in your class?â theyâve been delighted to talk to me and figure out a plan to help me improve. also, you will most likely need a letter of recommendation from one of your professors at some point in your college career, and you donât want to have to be that person sending an email to that professor you had three years ago that starts with âiâm sure you donât remember me, butâŚâ â how do you make a professor remember you? go to office hours! 12. sure, drinking might be fun and it might make you seem cool. it might make it easier for you to be in social situations. but when you are entirely incapable of having fun while sober, thatâs when you know you have a problem. that whole âyouâre not an alcoholic until after collegeâ saying is bullshit. itâs fine to have drinking be a part of your social life. just make sure it doesnât become your ENTIRE social life. also, if a party gets too loud and rowdy, do yourself a favor and get out of there before campus police shows up. itâs not worth the stress to have that be on your record. 13. the great thing about college is that you can pick your friends (unlike in high school when you kind of were forced to be friends with the people in your classes), so please choose wisely. be friends with people who do cool things and support you while you do cool things. if someone makes you feel shitty, donât hang out with them. just straight up tell them that you donât want to spend time with them anymore, too. life is too short to be friends with people you hate. 14. take lots of pictures â but not just for social media. for yourself, too. so that you can look back on these moments ten or twenty years from now and see how much youâve learned, grown, and changed. 15. there were douchey people in high school and, unfortunately, there will be douchey people in college, too. but anyone who still tries to be âpopularâ in college is just setting themselves up for disappointment and embarrassment. so just ignore them. eventually, they will grow up and realize the error of their ways. but until then, stay as far away from them as possible and just do your own thing. âleave lame people to keep doing the lame shit that they do.â 16. i know youâre busy, but donât forget to call your mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma, grandpa â whatever. if thereâs someone back home who cares about you, call them. and more often then you think you need to. because i can promise you that theyâre probably worried sick about you. 17. be confident. if youâre not confident, then fake confidence until it becomes real. you are glorious. you are wonderful. once youâre no longer afraid to show your true self to others, youâll give others the confidence to reveal their true selves, as well. so what if youâre a little chubby? so what if you still have acne? so what if you donât have clothes that are as nice as everyone else? youâre still a force of nature, and people should be dying to want to hang out with someone as awesome as you. 18. get involved in things. new things. never danced before but always wanted to? try out for the dance team. always wanted to sing but never had the guts before? try out for an acapella group. nothing is holding you back. 19. the whole âno one knows me here, i can be whoever i want to beâ is true, but only to a certain extent. you can change yourself in college, but you probably wonât be able to change who you are fundamentally. you are still the silly, goofy, crazy you that you were in high school. so even though you might tell yourself that you want to be friendlier, cooler, prettier, smarter â whatever â donât lose sight of who you really are, because i can promise you that people will see past your facade. and the more honest you are to people, the more likely they will be to open up to you. 20. be a nice person. hold the door open for people. smile at everyone you make eye contact with. talk to the person you sit next to in class, even if it is a 100+ person lecture. college is hard, and it can be very easy to feel lonely and lost. so just be nice to people. you never know whose day youâll make. plus, it has its perks.

PLANNING YOUR MONTH
The early bird gets organized
Start 2 days before the beginning of the next month . If youâre scrambling to organize everything you have to do for that month the day the month starts, youâre already behind.
PICK A LOCATION
It can be your planner, your bullet journal, or your bedroom/ dorm room wall. But pick a location where you will use your monthly plan, and see it often so that youâre acclimated with it.
COPIES???
What if the only monthly plan you made suffers severe water damage? Then youâre screwed for an entire month. I i m p l o r e you to please PLEASE make a copy of your plan. Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody has those days. Donât let that DAY ruin your MONTH.
Start with your academics
Starting with academics not only keeps your priorities in line with where they should be, but it permits you to get all your ducks in a row for your classes. Find out when they are, if you donât have the same courses every day, so you know what to be prepared for on which day
Follow up with assessments
Academics and assessments go hand in hand. Now that you know what day everything is for this month, and when you will be having your classes, find out what assignments you have in those classes. Knowing your assignments in advance allows for more preparation, and more consequent success
Prioritize those assessments!
If one assessment is your final grade for a mandatory course, and one assessment is a vocabulary quiz, the final grade assessment needs to be prioritized over the vocabulary quiz. Make sure you are highlighting the more important assessments, so you know their value!
Do the same with homework!!!
Homework is often seen as less important that assessments, but you still need to get it done. If you know in advance what assignments you will have, put those in!
Got projects?
Projects are the bane of every individualâs existence because you think you have all the time in the world to get it done, and then they due date sneaks up on you like the plague. Not only should you WRITE IN THAT DUE DATE but separate the tasks that you have to do for that assignment and assign it to yourself as homework.
Make your appointments!
Figure out what appointments you have that entire month, and preferably before the month starts. That way, you can ensure there are no conflicts and go in with ease.
Extracurricular obligations!
Find out what obligations you have for your extracurriculars before they sneak up on you. No one wants to be out of compliance for an extracurricular, but you donât want it to conflict with your life either.
Fit in some F U N.
Donât make your monthly plan just boring this, and plain old that. Incorporate some hang-out sessions with friends, or a personal day (maybe two). Everyone needs that R & R.
DO IT AGAIN
Repeat it the next month. Soon, youâll be in a habit of planning. I promise, this will make your life s o m u c h e a s i e r.

How I Got Straight Aâs in My First Year of University
I was so proud of myself when I received firsts (thatâs Aâs for those not attending uni in the UK) on all of my assessments in my first year at university. Here are some tips for yâall to try at any point in university. They may be specific at times to my experienceâmy degree is in the social sciences and humanities, and Iâm studying in the UKâbut I did try to make them more generally applicable, and hopefully they should be helpful to someone out there.
Part One: Everyday Study Routine
Before the start of the academic year, try to get in a little bit of preparation. See if there are any syllabi or reading lists posted online. You donât have to pour over them, of course, but do attempt to do something, and have a basic grasp on what will be covered in your classes.
Go to all your lectures and seminars. Unless you absolutely have to miss class because you are ill or have an important obligation to take care of, itâs really important to attend your lectures every day. (Note: if you are struggling with mental or chronic illness or a disability, donât beat yourself up if you keep missing class. Please take care of yourself.) You may be tempted to just look at the PowerPoint presentation online, but itâs much more effective to be there in person. Often the lecturer may include information or extra explanations which are not included in the presentation. It will also allow you to process the information aurally as well as visually, and you will have the added benefit of taking notes too. You may also be able to ask questions.
Do all the pre-reading for lectures. I know itâs tempting to put it off, but try to work it into your daily routine (because you will have reading to do every day). Inevitably, there will be times where you slip up and donât have time to finish. If this happens, make sure you catch up on it at some point, because itâs very important to solidifying the concepts you are learning about. Also, the more you read in general, the better you will become at reading (and also writing).
Take diligent notes (for both your lectures and pre-reading), and keep them organized. I prefer to handwrite in a notebook, as it helps me synthesize information rather than just typing it out verbatimâbut it is totally up to you. If you do use a notebook, make a table of contents on the first page, where you write the date, topic, class, and page numbers of each set of notes you take. I think itâs a great idea to include your own thoughts and opinions in notes, or linking concepts you are learning to concepts you already know about.
If you have the time, make sure to be reading books/essays/articles and engaging with ideas outside of your regular syllabus. This is one of the most important techniques (in my experience, at least) when it comes to writing essays and answering exam questions. Evidence of wider reading around a topic is a great way to boost the credibility of your argument. It also does wonders to solidify and broaden your conceptualization of certain ideas you may have covered in your classes.
Where possible, try to contribute (as much as you feel comfortable) in seminars. If you are very quiet and reserved, that is totally okay too. Iâm with you. But it has helped me tremendously in the past year to push myself to speak up more often in seminars. Talking in seminars allows you to clarify concepts and engage more deeply with the material being discussed (and it might impress your seminar tutor too, though this is secondary to the learning in my opinion).
If you have some nerdy-ass friends, talk with them about your ideas and what youâre both learning in your courses. I canât tell you the number of essays Iâve written which actually have blossomed out of conversations Iâve had with friends, where theyâve exposed me to topics Iâd never heard of before or broadened my view of a concept. Learning from each other in a casual and fun setting is amazing!
Part Two: Assessment Time
When you are given notice about big assignments coming up, such as essays or group projects, try to start working on them ASAP. Trust me, I know how hard it is. This is coming from someone who has dealt for years with chronic procrastination issues and nearly didnât graduate from high school because of it. But you must start planning as soon as you possibly can, because the due date will come screaming up and before you know it, itâll be the night before the deadline and you wonât have a clue what youâre writing about. Work it into your daily schedule if you have to. One great tip is to write down the deadline as being earlier (say, a week earlier) than what it actually is. This will prompt you to start earlier than you normally would have.
Do a shitload of reading, widely, from multiple sources. Read everything you can on the topic you are doing your assignment on. For a basic literature review, this means looking through at least 20+ sources. That doesnât mean carefully perusing each one front to back; it means looking through all the relevant literature to find a few great sources which will really give you a coherent argument and a big picture of the topic at hand.
Keep your sources organized. I use Paperpile, which is a Chrome extension that allows you to save and organize academic sources. I make a folder for each assessment I am working on, and anything I find relevant to my topic, I save it to the folder. This will be a life saver for you when you actually go to plan your paper and also do the referencing.
Content is important, but perhaps even more important is your argument and structure. This mostly applies to essays, but you can apply it to other types of assessments too. Try not to structure your argument in terms of blocks of contentâe.g. Paragraph 1 is about Topic A, Paragraph 2 is about Topic Bâbut rather in terms of how you are laying out your argument. Make sure each part of your essay flows into the next, so that you are, for example, setting up a kind of dialogue or narrative between the different sources youâre using. Also ensure that any point you are making clearly relates back to your main thesis.
If youâre a perfectionist like me: train yourself to remember that there is no such thing as perfect. Try to imagine what the perfect essay would be like. Can you imagine it? Itâs probably pretty difficult, right? Thatâs because there is no such thing as a perfect assignment. Remind yourself of this, constantly. Tell yourself that you will be okay with just doing your very best. If you think about it logically: handing in something that is perhaps not your best ever, but handing it in on time and doing pretty well, is infinitely better than attempting to have a âperfectâ essay but handing it in late and failing the assignment.
I hope this helped some of you! Best of luck and happy studying this yearâgo knock âem out! xo
loose-leaf notebooks are my favourite thing - I use them for both my notes and bullet journal!
These are some of the study habits and tips I have learnt / found most helpful in years 7-10. Itâs mostly aimed at students in years 9-12, but can be applied to older and younger students too. Hope you find this helpful (:
1. Find a homework organisation system that works for you. Some schools (my school) may try to push particular methods on you, but ultimately you should use what is best for you personally. You can use a traditional organiser like a planner or homework app, or get more creative with something like a bullet journal system. I myself use a site called Trello, which although not designed for homework management works very well for it. Within a âboardâ, you can have seperate lists for homework that is overdue, due tomorrow, due soon, due in a long time, and done. Tasks can be moved between these lists as their status changes, and each task can be colour coded by subject and have a due date and checklist of subtasks / checkpoints. I find the system works extremely well. And remember, you can always use more than one system.
2. Keep a list of skills / concepts that you have trouble with, and use it as reference for getting help at the start of each class. This way you wonât forget something that needs clearing up, and bits of information wonât be missing from your knowledge when exam time approaches.
3. You need to know vocab, so get in to the habit of making flashcards. Even if you understand the concepts behind a topic, you will not do well in an exam if you canât communicate your knowledge through accurate, subject-specific terms. This is important for all subjects, but especially those with a lot of complex definitions such as biology.Â
4. I know youâve heard this before, but please donât leave your work to the last minute. I know it is hard not to procrastinate, but Iâve been using a technique this year that has made it so much easier for me. The idea is that rather than assigning a list of tasks that need to get done in the day and then stopping once they are complete (and leaving non-essential tasks for later), assign each day a particular length of time that you will study for. Work out approximately how long you need each night for homework + extra study and revision, and then adjust based on which days you have other responsibilities. Then, work until either the time runs out or you have no work left set (even if its not due for weeks, it still counts as set). If you donât complete everything in time then keep going until all essential tasks (those due the next day) are done, and if you finish early use the remaining time for extra study and revision. Iâve found this technique to be all around beneficial - I donât procrastinate much at all, I never have to rush on tasks because I left them to the last minute, I am way less stressed, and Iâve also improved how I manage the time I spend on homework.
5. Revise consistently, not just in preparation for tests and exams. If you do so, youâll have learnt all the basic vocabulary and concepts by exam time, and you can focus your time right before exams on deepening your understanding and completing practice questions. Iâll do a detailed post on how I schedule my revision sometime, but basically I make concept summary cards and vocabulary cards at the end of every week (for my maths and science subjects), and I begin other revision (practice tests, concept maps, etc) halfway to each test (eg. in week 5 for a test at the end of a 10 week unit, or at the end of term one for a unit that runs for a semester). I do this for both small unit tests and end of semester / year exams.
6. When it comes to test time, reinforce conceptual understanding through videos. Itâs like youâre being taught the concept all over again, but in a summarised manner so you can work on remembering the key points. Also, things are often easier to understand when presented visually. You can also use this technique when you are struggling to understand a concept. Some great YouTube playlists for revising concepts are:

7. Studying with friends is fun, but donât let yourself get distracted. If you are going to study with someone else, use them to help explain things and bounce ideas off, rather than as a distraction. Set an amount of time you are going to dedicate to study, then afterwards you can do something fun together.
8. Learn the subject so you could teach it to someone else. By doing so you ensure you have a complete and thorough understanding of the topic, without any gaps in your knowledge. Try teaching the content to a friend or sibling, or creating a mini-guide / lesson plan as if you are a teacher preparing to deliver the subject. Make sure you can elaborate on any questions someone may ask you on the topic.
9. Donât study as soon as you get home from school, but donât leave it too late either. Take a break when you get home to have a snack, check social media / emails, and maybe practice a musical instrument or do something artsy. Start your homework so you can complete 2/3 to ž of it before dinner, and then finish the rest afterwards. At least an hour before bedtime, stop studying and instead watch tv, read, or do something creative. This way you get plenty of sleep and donât have to study for too long at once.
10. Work on applying theories to real-life examples and problems. This is another way to ensure you have a full understanding of all concepts and vocabulary. Your textbook should have plenty of application problems, or you could try writing a research essay or lab report to demonstrate your understanding. If youâre good at applying concepts to a variety of problems, it will make short and extended response questions in an exam so much easier.
