Wishing someone would kiss me like I was their wife and we were standing on the crowded train station platform, with them dressed in their uniform as they were preparing to board the train that would take them to the western front of the Great War, with the uncertainty of whether or not they would ever return. Even if they returned, they wouldn’t be as same person I knew. So for that one precious second while the train whistle blows and the conductor hails to the crowd, we share a lifetime of passion and sadness only for them to pull away, climb aboard the train, and call to me with their love. Only to leave me standing on the crowded platform as I watch the person I once knew so tenderly disappear from my view.
