Basic backstory for the AU:

The witch captured the trio right before they could escape, by this time and in the AU the trio have already caused a lot of problems around the castle (to escape it) and the witch was fed up with them, so as a ‘punishment’ or payback she took their weapons and locked them in the oven and turned it to the hottest temperature the oven could go.

Obviously the trio try to find a way out, but the combination of being surrounded by intense flames in a closed area with no way out and being with other people you desperately want to protect plus you not wanting to die when you were so close to freedom AND the intense adrenaline rush while in a panicked state. It goes about as well as you can imagine.

While trying to find a way out wizard suggests he tries a protection spell. It’s important to note that in this AU he needs a witch’s wand to perform any kind of magic, normal methods cookies use won’t work on wizard. And all three know it probably won’t work but there’s quite literally no other options and at this point it’s a lose lose situation. They burn alive in the oven or die to a failed spell. So they huddle together and wizard attempts the spell.

And it works, in a way. The spell wasn’t cast properly and wizard has basically no magical abilities outside of the wand/staff and he didn’t practice the spell much plus he was panicking and freaking out (even if he tried not to show it) and running on an ungodly amount of adrenaline at the moment, so the spell was faulty and it didn’t stop the fire from melting the trio and burning their bodies.

Instead the spell caused the body’s to melt together and form a new cookie body while trapping their souls inside said body. After they return to the living world, It takes them a second to comprehend what’s going on but eventually they make it out of the oven (that was turned off and left open after the witch checked on them and thought they died) and found a place to hide out while they figure out the body sharing thing.

They’re able to locate their weapons and steal them back before finally escaping to earth bread. Where they soon figure out that the faulty protection spell was the very thing keeping their body from crumbling and no matter what they do they can’t seem to stop their body from slowly crumbling.
