Spring Roof Maintenance Checklist
Winter is tough on Ontario roofs. Before the spring rains hit, run through this quick checklist to catch small issues before they become big leaks:
1. Clean Your Gutters & Downspouts
Leaves, ice, and shingle granules clog everything. Clogged gutters = water backing up under shingles. Flush them out and make sure downspouts drain 5+ ft from your foundation.
2. Check for Missing/Damaged Shingles
From the ground, scan for shingles that are cracked, curled, or MIA after winter winds. Binoculars help. One missing shingle is an open door for water.
3. Look for Granule Loss
If your gutters look like beach sand, your shingles are aging. Excess granules mean your roof’s UV protection is wearing thin.
4. Inspect Flashing & Sealants
Check around chimneys, vents, skylights, and valleys. Cracked caulking or rusted flashing = common leak points. Reseal if needed.
5. Attic Check
On a sunny day, head to the attic. See daylight through the roof boards? Stains, mold, or damp insulation? That’s water getting in.
6. Trim Overhanging Branches
Spring growth + storms = branches scraping shingles or falling. Keep limbs 6-10 ft away from your roof.
7. Moss & Algae
Those dark streaks aren’t just ugly — they trap moisture and eat shingles. Gentle cleaning prevents damage.
8. Book a Pro Inspection
Some damage you can’t see from the ground. We spot soft decking, failing underlayment, and ventilation issues before they cost you.
