college advice from someone whoâs been on both sides of it
So Iâm finishing up my Ph.D. and preparing to depart for the real world (no, just kidding, Iâm going to be in school forever, only in a different capacity)Â and I thought Iâd put together a list of some college tips to share with you all. I graduated with my B.A. in 2012, magna cum laude, with 2 majors, 1 honours thesis, 2 on-campus jobs, and 3 music things. Since then, Iâve gone to grad school and also taught six semesters of first-year seminars. Now Iâm going on the job market for teaching positions. All of this means that Iâve seen both sides of the college experience, as a student and as an instructor. There are a lot of great & useful college advice posts going around studyblr this time of here, and I wanted to add my own. I hope itâs useful. So here we go, with a âread moreâ because itâs long (sorry if youâre on mobile):
academics
find your classrooms ahead of time (profsâ offices too)
figure out how long it will take you to walk between places
figure out where your best seat will be & claim it
say hi to the people next to you, learn their names
take notes in class
take advantage of extra credit
try your best not to fall asleep in class (and if you do fall asleep, apologise to the prof afterwards)
bring your glasses if you need them, donât be stubborn about it
check out the library, wander in the stacks, talk to the librarians
figure out how & where to print
buy used books/textbooks, or rent them, but be careful with ebooks (some profs donât allow them)
plan breaks into your class schedule, or block everything together, whichever works best for you
work out the pros & cons of 8am classes and/or night classes
plan ahead â have a planner, put things in it, do them
fake deadlines are a thing (write down earlier deadlines, trick yourself into meeting them, bask in satisfaction)
grades wonât be what they were in high school
keep in mind GPA values: a 3.5 will see you graduating with honours
be nice to the departmental administrative staff, thank them for helping you (even with small things)
office hours versus emailing profs: both will get your questions answered (probably) but if you can go and talk in person, do it
profs & TAs are people too, they have lives, they have bad days
if something comes up, talk to your prof, be honest but donât overshare, just show them youâre trying
on that note, try

How to get straight Aâs in college. Seriously.
Yes, even if youâre taking the maximum credit load. Because if I can do it, you can do it too. Note: My credit load also included a handful of honors courses.Â
Side-note: Iâm going to be a junior (how??) and an RA (!!!) in the fall. Life moves fast. College moves faster. Anyways,Â
Here are my top tips:Â
1. LOOK AT THE SYLLABUS AND WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN. This is step number one, and itâs not up for debate. If you do this, thereâll be no surprises, and if there are: point it out to the professor (a simple, ??? this wasnât on the syllabus ??, usually works). Also, you have to check and see what constitutes as an A in that class. Sometimes itâs a 90, sometimes itâs not. (a 96 was an A- in one of my classes last semester. Iâm so serious.)
2. Get a calendar. Not a planner. One of those giant calendars with puppies or something on it and write down everything you have to do for the month. Put it above your desk. This helps A LOT because you can see everything you have coming up for the next few weeks, instead of jus playing it day-by-day.Â
3. It is OK to use ratemyprofessor. Sometimes it can be really helpful, but pay attention to the more in depth reviews that talk about what the homework, tests, quizzes and projects are like (instead of âher lectures are boring :///)Â
4. Sit in the front of your class. Youâll be more likely to pay attention and less likely to scroll through instagram. (by the way, mine is @parissdb :) It also grabs your professors attention, so even if youâre shy, theyâll at least know your face.
5. Do that extra credit. A lot of professors offer it in the beginning of the semester, and hardly anyone does it because no oneâs thinking past tomorrow. It may be what saves you in the long run.Â
6. Figure out your best method of note-taking. For me, itâs good ol pen and paper. It helps me remember everything. Some people prefer typing it out. This is beneficial bc it makes it easier for you to find exactly what youâre looking for. (Thank you, command + F)
7. Put your effort into the percentages. If an assignment is worth 1% of your grade, do it well, but donât exhaust yourself. Itâs 1%!!!! If it comes down to it, spend more time studying for that exam thatâs worth 30% than the group project worth 20.Â
8. Please. Stop studying what you already know. Weâre all guilty of it. It makes you feel better knowing you have chapters 1-3 down, even if you donât know 4-7. The key to studying is to learn what you donât know.Â
9. Learn how to study. (Yes, itâs actually a skill that has to be learned.) Iâm the biggest procrastinator I know, especially when it comes to studying. But Iâve found that studying 2 days before an exam usually does the trick for me. I create a master study guide during day 1 and study it all on day 2. Depending on what time the exam is, I may review on the morning of day 3.Â
10. SAVE SOME TIME FOR FUNÂ ffs. Seriously. You donât have to study 24/7, and I donât know about yâall but my attention span was not built for that.
I might add more to this later, or make another post because I could give these tips for ever and ever. But hopefully this helps someone out there.Â

How to Make a Personal Reward System for School
A personal reward system is way of motivating yourself to manage your time correctly when it comes to school projects or tests. You have to discipline yourself to wait off on doing things you love until youâve finished something you need to finish for school.
For example: âI will not start binge watching this show until Iâve finished reading that book for lit class.â Or, âI will buy myself these cute shoes as a reward once I get an A (or B) on this test.â
This post will be a compilation of potential (big and small) rewards you can give yourself: (Use with discretion!)
-an at-home spa day -a new movie -permission to watch a new show on Netflix -those cute, yet expensive shoes you saw the other day -a new video game -a day off -a mani-pedi -an overpriced gourmet latte at the local coffee shop -a bucket list item (i.e. scuba diving or a hot air balloon ride) -a new hair cut -a new hair color -a makeover -a shopping spree -a trip to a nearby city -a personal day (to do whatever you want) -music lessons -enrolling in a supplemental class that wonât meet any gen Ed or major requirements, but that you really want to learn about -girlâs (or broâs) day out -girlâs (or broâs) day in -a luxury makeup item -a hair mask or deep conditioning treatment -gel or acrylic nails -get totally glamâd up and go somewhere casually so you can stand out in the crowd -clean your house (if thatâs something you enjoy) -spend a day with family (if youâre in good terms with your family) -buy that piece of clothing that youâve been eyeing but arenât sure that you can pull off -go to a concert -go to a convention -go see a Broadway show -go to a fair or festival -go to the beach
Feel free to comment/reblog and add more ideas!! :-D
Back To School Tips Master Post!
I had a few people asking me to do a back to school tips/ how to do well in school post so here it is. Iâm a sophomore in college and an honors student so I plan on sharing the things that have helped me succeed. Even though these tips are things I use now in college, most of them I also used in high school so it can be applied there as well.Â
Organization                                                      The most beneficial thing you can do is stay organized.
Get a planner.- I bought mine this year at Walgreens for around $7 but it has a plastic cover so all paper ones are even cheaper. A planner is good for keeping track of when everything is due. When I get my syllabi for my classes I go through them and write down the due dates of homework, essays, tests, etc, on the day they are due. You can color code your classes or just write the class next to the assignment. This way you can look at a whole week and see everything you have due for all of your classes in one place. Itâs also easier to add in things or make changes if your professor decides to due so.
Use a white board- I know white boards can be expensive, so if you canât afford one, expo markers will write on laminated paper which you can get for around $4 on Amazon. I use this to keep on my wall and write the next really important date for each class. So I have all my classes listed on the board and letâs say my next big date in Psych is a test. Iâd write that date on the board, then after the test, Iâd erase it and write the next important date. These dates should be in your planner as well but itâs nice to have them right in front of you at all times so you donât turn to the next week in your planner and realize you have a test on Monday.Â
Buy durable folders- If youâre going to be using your folders all year make sure theyâll last all year. You want to lose any of your assignments. I get plastic folders at Office Depot for $0.39 a piece. I chose a color for each class and write the class at the top in sharpie and Iâm good to go!
Notebooks too!- Youâre going to be taking a lot of notes so make sure to keep a notebook for each class as well. Mine were $3 each at Office Depot but they have a plastic cover so if you need to save some money get the paper covers because you most likely wont reuse a notebook.
Get a pack of loose leaf paper- Sometimes you have to turn things in and if youâre like me then you hate tearing it out of your notebook. But if you donât have a problem with that then donât worry about it!
Use some sort of bag/backpack- This will help you not lose anything plus you can put water, snacks, etc in it as well!
Study Tips                                                        Tests are often the biggest portion of your grade so knowing the best ways to study will help you out the most.Â
Figure out what type of learner you are- This can greatly improve your study skills. There are visual learners; these people learn best with charts, graphs, and anything that show a visual relationship between information. So if youâre this type of person, to help study you could make charts, graphs, tables, draws arrows between points of information, or watch videos. Anything to help you see it. There are also auditory learners; these people learn best when hearing the information. So the best way for these people to study is to recite information out loud, or if your course has an audio book to listen to it. You could also have a friend read information to you and you say it as well. Some people are reading/writing learners; they do best when reading the text and writing down important points/taking notes. This is the type of learner I am so to help me study, I write out my own flashcards, I copy power points into my notes, and as I read my chapters I write the important information. Something else that is good for these kind of learners is to make little quizzes for yourself. There are also kinesthetic learners; they learn best with more hands on activities. This can be hard to do especially with some subjects. If you can physically do what youâre studying then do it. If not, make a game out of it. For example, ask yourself questions and if you get it right take a shot at a basketball hoop or a soccer goal (if you donât have these things use a paper ball and your trashcan or anything you can substitute. Figuring out which learner you are will greatly improve how you study.
Donât wait until right before a test- Cramming your brain with all the information a few days before a test will not help you remember and only stress you out. This is called Massed Practice and is proven to be a waste of time and information is not retained well. Study a little everyday or every other day. This is called the Spacing Effect and is proven to improve retention and recall of information. So it is best to do short sessions of study over a long period of time rather than a long session all at once.
Find a good place to study- If you like quiet places and your house/dorm is too loud go to a library or outside if itâ s a nice day. If you like a lot of background noise play some music or go to a coffee shop.
Overall Tips                                                       These tips are still really important but I donât have enough that fit together to make another header.
Work on whatâs due first- Some people think itâs always best to work on the important things first but thatâs not always the case. If your essay is due in two weeks and you have an assignment due in a few days then finish the assignment first. Youâll still have plenty of time for your essay. I suggest doing all your work but if something happens to where you just canât then yes do the more important thing because itâll be a bigger part of your grade.
Writing Centers- A lot of colleges/universities have writing centers. If youâre not the best at writing or just need some help you can make an appointment at the writing center where someone highly qualified in writing will read your paper/essay and help you with grammar, punctuation, idea flow, overall organization etc. I highly suggest checking to see if your school has one of these.
Check your email/Blackboard/whatever your professor uses- This is where they may add extra assignments/ cancel class and not mention it in class. Itâs always important to check.
Try to relax- I know it can be hard, especially for students with depression, anxiety, and other mental/physical illnesses but itâs important to always take a moment and calm down. Take breaks from your work and do something you enjoy for at least a few minutes everyday. If you need a nap, take a nap. just set an alarm to pick back up on your work later.
Donât worry about being perfect- This is still something Iâm working on myself but getting better at. Last semester I got a B for the first time since my sophomore year of high school and it bothered me to no end. But, I told myself I did my best, and as a person with bad social anxiety Iâm okay with my B in public speaking. So for anyone else who feels like they have to keep their 4.0 all 4 years, donâ t panic if you donât. Thereâs nothing wrong with not being perfect, almost no one graduates college with a 4.0. Always do your best, but donât put too much pressure on yourself. I cannot stress this enough.
Take classes you enjoy- Hopefully youâre in a major that you enjoy so you wont hate your classes too much but itâs still important to try to take a fun class every once in awhile. If you like art, take an art class. Then, youâre still doing work but also doing something you like.
Get a tutor- If youâre not doing as well in a class as you would like, donât be afraid to get a tutor. Most universities offer tutors who are students that would love to help you and wont be judgmental at all. Thereâs nothing wrong with getting a little extra help and tutors are often people who have already passed the class with an A so theyâll be very good resources.
Take care of yourself- Overall, make sure youâre eating well and drinking water throughout the day. Sometimes itâs impossible, but try to get enough sleep. If you go out to party watch out for yourself and others. Practice self care and if things get too stressful and you need help donât be afraid to ask.
I know this post is very long, but I wanted to share everything I could for anyone who wanted help. If I think of anything else Iâll definitely add it later. I hope everyone has a great semester and school year! Good luck to everyone!

7.17.17 // 6:56 pm taken from my studygram @elaine.studies - link in blog
So I made a weekly planner I truly intend to use!! (It looks so empty but itâs the summer semester and I only have one class!)I just found out about the studyblr community and it is so, so inspiring. I am sharring it with you as my first ever contribution to the studyblr! Yay!
I made four versions on the variation of the tiny deers at the top (I love them, but maybe someone wonât want them there!) and the blanks for the daily objectives. My personal objectives are 1) work on school things 2) read a few pages of a book since Iâm doing the â2015 Reading Challengeâ 3) write a minimum of 100 words of anything and 4) spend less money!
With the deers
One blank version
Two blanks version
Without the deers
One blank version
Two blanks version
If you use it or make a variation of it please like or reblog so I know I helped someone! Thanks! :) Oh and Iâm not a study blog, Iâm a hockey blog: donât follow or youâll be invaded by handsome dorks.
EDIT: There is a Monthly Expenses Chart that matches this planner.
Top 4 Life Changing Apps You Need as a College Student (With Demos)
Hey everyone! Â I was just using each of these apps today to study for my midterms, and I figured Iâd share the wealth. Â I got each of these apps from the Apple App Store, and use them seamlessly across my Apple devices. Â I hope each of them change your midterm weeks for the better! (This is post is kind of long but I made it long to cover what I think are the coolest/most useful things about these apps)
App #1: Notability
Yah, yah. Â Youâve heard of this one before. Â Iâm here to show you some reasons for that. Â
Best Features:
1. Annotating and Combining All of the Powerpoints and PDFâs of Your Wildest Dreams
Holy crap is this thing good at converting powerpoints and PDFs.  The transition is undetectable.  Furthermore, if your lecture material was split up into 2 powerpoints that your professor posted, or multiple topics are covered in one powerpoint that you want to separate, you can either combine them into one note, or only import selected slides into separate notes.  Once you do that, you can draw, highlight, add photos and additional typed textâŚpretty much anything extra youâd need is at your fingertips.Â
Demo: Importing PDFS:
Here Iâm taking a random web page PDF from organicchem.org about chair conformers, tapping once on it, and copying it to the notability app. Â
You literally just tap a couple times and itâs done for you. Â You can add the PDF to a new note, an old note, or even take specific pages of the PDF/powerpoint and place only the ones you want into a new or existing note. Â Itâs almost too easy to be true. Â
2. You Can Actually Write Neatly
If youâre anything like me, it bothers you how your handwriting suddenly looks messy when you write on tablets. Â Well, notability handles that for you.Â
Demo: Writing and Editing Written Text:
Here Iâm writing a huge note of what I want to remember with the pencil tool. I picked a red color from the huge color selection, and a rather thin pencil line because itâs only a small side-note. Â Of course you can customize your writing to fit what is easiest for you to read and study from. Â What happens in the second and third pictures is the cool part:
You can use the scissors tool to put a circle around what you just wrote, and then pinch and rotate the text to change its size and orientation, as well as drag your finger to move it to where you want your note to go.  This way you can write super neatly and just do the moving around afterwords, making sure you can see your text and are comfortable with the way it appears.  You can also re-select it to make it bigger again if you change your mind. Â
3. You Can Record and Embed Your Lectures Into Your Notes, While Youâre Writing Original Notes OR Annotating Existing Ones
You can do them at the same time. Â You donât have to think about inserting a recording after the fact, or mixing up small recordings and meshing them into one document. Â Notability sorts your audio recordings and fixes them up pretty for you, and just starts recording as soon as you hit the speaker button. Â Then you can keep annotating what Dr. So-and-So is saying without worrying about your recording being in the right place.
Demo: Recording While Note-Taking:
After youâve recorded, you can click the speaker button again to edit the recordingâs volume, sort multiple recordings youâve taken as well as name them. Â Move the recordings from note to note, etc. Â
App #2: Flashcard Hero
Known colloquially as: âHow Iâm Passing My Anatomy Labâ
Listen here yâall if you wanna make flashcards fast as fuck and learn them the day of your practical, Flashcard Hero is how.
General Overview of Best Features:
The way I predominantly use this app is by furiously making and organizing my flashcards into millions of sections and subsections on my computer, so that everything is findable and easy to access within my flashcard deck. Â Then I move them via iCloud over to my phone and tablet to study them on the go. Â
You can put pictures, videos, PDF pages, anything on the front or back of your flashcard, and just as much as you want on the back as well.  When you study, you can choose if you want the front or back to show up first, or an alternation of the two if you prefer.  There is no length limit on what you can place on a particular card. Â
While youâre studying, the app gives you options of clicking âEasy, Unsure, or Hardâ on the card youâre reviewing, so that it will pop up with the ones youâre unsure/really clueless about more often.  This saves my actual ass I canât recommend it enough.  It has improved my ability to memorize tons of material far more quickly and efficiently.
Demo: The General Interface of Flashcard Hero:
You can see some of the features Iâve talked about.  If you want to know even more of the features, try downloading the app and checking out the âTutorialâ deck it includes on the main menu!
App #3: LiquidText
This is another insanely useful method of PDF annotation. Â It is like nothing Iâve ever seen before, and is really good for people who enjoy mind-mapping and comprehensively organizing their ideas while reading!
Best Feature: Organizing Important Bits of Text:
Okay prepare to be very happy about this. Â You can literally highlight a section of a PDF, drag it to the side of your screen, and poof. Â Your highlighted bit is saved for you to click on and easily access later. Â You can even link your highlighted bits, no matter how far apart they are within the document, to help connect and organize your thoughts. Â And wait until you see Highlightview, where you can pinch the document so that all of your highlighted portions come together labelled with page numbers. Â Too satisfying okay, too satisfying:
If youâre reading something really quickly before class, and you want to easily access interesting portions of a long text during a class discussion, this app will save your life and save you pain in the long run.
App #4: MyScript Calculator
Just watch the demo of this one and prepare to take a huge sigh of relief and awe and happiness. Â It actually works and doesnât confuse what youâre writing, and will do difficult/complex computation. Â By changing around the settings to fit the discipline of math youâre doing, this app can save you some annoying typing into calculators and can help you visualize large calculations at a glance.
Best Features: Blowing my tiny, bad at fast-math mind
Demo: General Interface of MyScript Calculator
Just. Yes. Yes good.
Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed this/found at least one of these useful! Â Merry midterms! Â
Note taking tips
Notebook for each class.Â
Have a separate notebook for each class. It keeps things organized. Plus, if you keep all of your classesâ notes in the same notebook and you lose that notebook, youâre pretty much SOL. Write clearly. If youâre going to handwrite your notes, make sure you can read them later. PenMANship. Itâs got the word âmanâ in it, so itâs manly. Let go of perfectionism The purpose of note-taking is simple: to help you study better and more quickly. First, whatâs new to you? Thereâs no point in writing down facts you already know. If you already know the Declaration of Independence was written and signed in 1776, thereâs no reason to write that down. Anything you know you know you can leave out of your notes. Second, whatâs relevant? What information is most likely to be of use later, whether on a test, in an essay, or in completing a project? Focus on points that directly relate to or illustrate your reading (which means youâll have to have actually done the readingâŚ). The kinds of information to pay special attention to are:Â
* Dates of events: Dates allow you toÂ
a) create a chronology, putting things in order according to when they happened, and
b) understand the context of an event. For instance, knowing Isaac Newton was born in 1643 allows you to situate his work in relation to that of other physicists who came before and after him, as well as in relation to other trends of the 17th century.
 * Names of people: Being able to associate names with key ideas also helps remember ideas better and, when names come up again, to recognize ties between different ideas whether proposed by the same individuals or by people related in some way.
 * Theories: Any statement of a theory should be recorded â theories are the main points of most classes.Â
* Definitions: Like theories, these are the main points and, unless you are positive you already know the definition of a term, should be written down. Keep in mind that many fields use everyday words in ways that are unfamiliar to us.Â
 * Arguments and debates: Any list of pros and cons, any critique of a key idea, both sides of any debate related in class or your reading should be recorded. This is the stuff that advancement in every discipline emerges from, and will help you understand both how ideas have changed (and why) but also the process of thought and development within the particular discipline you are studying.Â
* Images and exercises: Whenever an image is used to illustrate a point, or when an in-class exercise is performed, a few words are in order to record the experience. Obviously itâs overkill to describe every tiny detail, but a short description of a painting or a short statement about what the class did should be enough to remind you and help reconstruct the experience.Â
 * Other stuff: Just about anything a professor writes on a board should probably be written down, unless itâs either self-evident or something you already know. Titles of books, movies, TV series, and other media are usually useful, though they may be irrelevant to the topic at hand; I usually put this sort of stuff in the margin to look up later (itâs often useful for research papers, for example). Pay attention to other studentâs comments, too â try to capture at least the gist of comments that add to your understanding.Â
* Your own questions: Make sure to record your own questions about the material as they occur to you. This will help you remember to ask the professor or look something up later, as well as prompt you to think through the gaps in your understanding.Â
* Note-Taking Techniques: You donât have to be super-fancy in your note-taking to be effective, but there are a few techniques that seem to work best for most people.
* Outlining: Whether you use Roman numerals or bullet points, outlining is an effective way to capture the hierarchical relationships between ideas and data. In a history class, you might write the name of an important leader, and under it the key events that he or she was involved in. Under each of them, a short description. And so on. Outlining is a great way to take notes from books, because the author has usually organized the material in a fairly effective way, and you can go from start to end of a chapter and simply reproduce that structure in your notes. For lectures, however, outlining has limitations. The relationship between ideas isnât always hierarchical, and the instructor might jump around a lot. A point later in the lecture might relate better to information earlier in the lecture, leaving you to eitherÂ
a) flip back and forth to find where the information goes best (and hope thereâs still room to write it in)Â
b) risk losing the relationship between what the professor just said and what she said before. â¨Â
* Mind-mapping: For lectures, a mind-map might be a more appropriate way of keeping track of the relationships between ideas. Hereâs the idea: in the center of a blank sheet of paper, you write the lectureâs main topic. As new sub-topics are introduced (the kind of thing youâd create a new heading for in an outline), you draw a branch outward from the center and write the sub-topic along the branch. Then each point under that heading gets its own, smaller branch off the main one. When another new sub-topic is mentioned, you draw a new main branch from the center. And so on. The thing is, if a point should go under the first heading but youâre on the fourth heading, you can easily just draw it in on the first branch. Likewise, if a point connects to two different ideas, you can connect it to two different branches. If you want to neaten things up later, you can re-draw the map or type it upÂ
 * The Cornell System: The Cornell System is a simple but powerful system for increasing your recall and the usefulness of your notes. About a quarter of the way from the bottom of a sheet of paper, draw a line across the width of the page. Draw another line from that line to the top, about 2 inches (5 cm) from the right-hand edge of the sheet. Youâve divided your page into three sections. In the largest section, you take notes normally â you can outline or mind-map or whatever. After the lecture, write a series of âcuesâ into the skinny column on the right, questions about the material youâve just taken notes on. This will help you process the information from the lecture or reading, as well as providing a handy study tool when exams come along: simply cover the main section and try to answer the questions. In the bottom section, you write a short, 2-3 line summary in your own words of the material youâve covered. Again, this helps you process the information by forcing you to use it in a new way; it also provides a useful reference when youâre trying to find something in your notes later. Charting Method If your professorâs lecture will be focused on comparing and contrasting two or more ideas, you might consider using the charting method. Create a table in the note-taking program youâre using. Make as many columns as there are categories that youâre comparing and contrasting. Label each column with a category. As you listen to the lecture, record the notes under the appropriate category.

handwriting printable!
this is my first ever printable!
throughout my obsession with studyblrs, iâve always loved free printables! and, since i needed to work on my handwriting before the new school year anyways, iâve decided to share it with everyone!
i added:
the alphabet in lowercase and uppercase.
numbers 0-9.Â
the words hi + bye + and + you.
you can find it on my google drive here + please tag me in all your pictures if you do use them!
i hope youre all lying and hyping your cv/resumeâs up
i have never gotten an interview and not been offered a job position after it
I mean lets be honest if everyone else is gassing theirs up like no tomorrow and youâre being as honest as you can who th are the recruitment team going to be more interested in
Thereâs people working in my banks head office with me WITH MUCH MORE EXPERIENCE than me BUT ARE GETTING PAID LESS
weâre doing the exact same job role
the point Iâm trying to make here is if youâve handled finances for a company youâre now what i would call a treasurer my g, if youâve done admin work you are now a secretary (or as Iâve put Management secretary)
you help some kid with his homework? youâre a private tutor.
keep your bullets points for the job role as concise and important sounding as possible AND ALWAYS EMPHASIS THAT YOURE A TEAM PLAYER IF YOURE GOING TO WORK IN A TEAM.
go into that interview room and get your story straight the night before and remember that interviews are two way conversatons yes they might be grilling you but at the end of it make sure to grill them BACK. do you have any hesitations about my qualifications? my suitability for the job? any feedback on my cv? how long have you been working at this company? do you like it here? whats the work environment like?
I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS GET THE SAME FEEDBACK WHEN THEY GET BACK IN TOUCH WITH ME
âive never been asked those questions beforeâ / âyou were one of the strongest candidatesâ
throughout the interview emphasise that youre about progression, that you want more responsibilities than you did at your previous job, tell them the hours here are more suitable for me than my last ones were, AND WHEN IT COMES TO SALARY NEGOTIATION its all about continuity. tell them again that it boils down to progression. make up a reasonable figure for how much you were paid in your last role (do your research for how much the industry youre applying to or the role youre applying for pays, base it on that) tell them you expect more than you were previously paid. do not give them a figure. progression is your primary focus, tell them if youre progressing youre happy. leave it at that.
LIE THROUGH YOUR TEETH AND GET THAT MONEY
I had an interview yesterday, at the place Iâve been temping, where I busted out the âis there anything about my skills or background that makes you concerned about my fit for this jobâ question for the first time.
Neither of my supervisors had never gotten it before either. They had to think for a while, and then it turned into them telling me how great I am and what they love about me.
This stuff is real. I would also say: none of it is lying. This is taking experience that you normally downplay and write off, and putting it in accurate words theyâll understand.
Itâs hacking the capitalist system. Why ISNâT helping a kid with homework âtutoringâ, when the only thing missing is a paycheck?
Itâs especially important for anyone who isnât a cis white man, because many of us are so thoroughly trained to feel like we are not good enough.
Privilege tells people they can fake it, and that theyâre good enough just as people and can learn the skills on the job. Abuse and oppression tell people they arenât good enough as people and that even their high skills are probably below average, and that unless they had the specific job title or were using certain skills officially, nobody will think it counts.
The goal is to at least fake the confidence of a privileged person, to give the employer a chance at seeing the skills that youâve been trained to undervalue.
I would also say to answer any query of âHave you done [X small task] before?â with âI have, but itâs been a while.â Or, âI have, but it was a slightly different program.â
100% THEY WILL GLADLY WALK YOU THROUGH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW, and I stress âgladlyâ because claiming prior knowledge boosts their confidence in your abilities and any slips you make are already covered by your caveat.Â
blackstoic may have deactivated their account but this advice is fucking gold and all yâall looking for jobs or who think you might one day need to look for a new job PRINT THIS SHIT OUT AND STAPLE IT TO THE WALL.Â
Body language is also a good thing to work on in interviews.Â
Smiling and being polite are good, so is trying to be charismatic.Â
Donât swear, donât comment on âbadâ things in youâre old job unless youâre doing a âthere were issues with the system/computers but we adapted well and managed to make a good thing out of a bad situationâ in order to enhance your skills and employability.
Donât slouch in your seat, but also donât sit ramrod straight. Aim for something more casual, but donât go too casual.Â
Try and keep your shoulders from raising up. Hunching up and sitting tensely mark you out as nervous and unable to hide it. Sometimes this can work badly for you if youâre looking for a customer service role.
If they ask if you have reliable transport, or âhow will you make it to work?â the answer you always give, even if it isnât true, is âpersonal transportâ or âcarâ. Doesnât matter if you carpool or get the bus or walk. If you say you have your own transport theyâre more likely to consider you for next step.
Another thing, sometimes they call you and youâre busy doing stuff and you have to stop and answer their questions. I had a call from a place Iâd applied to, one of many, and none of them had called me back so, naturally, I forgot all about this other place. That meant that I had no recollection of anything they asked me about their company and such.Â
Itâs important to keep track of where youâve applied to, when youâve applied to them, and whether they state outright that theyâll contact potential applicants or no one at all.Â
