Pillow Fort
(@katealot)
One and a half years. One and a half years ago, the Hignue had invaded and unleashed hell on the world. Hordes of extraterrestrial electronic life overwhelmed humanity and in 6 months, that flame of human life was all but quashed.
Three months. Three months ago a team of four survivors set out on their mission to follow the whispers rumors of the Resistance, a supposed group of surviving anarchists with connections to an un-infested safe haven.
28 days. It had been 28 days since the last time theyβd heard from Heirloom. After two months of weekly correspondence, the radio silence was more than unusual.
Pana sat on a pile of pillows in their corner of the room, a laptop on their lap, and a radio scanner next to them. Their brow was furrowed in concentration as they typed furiously. Their last communication had been on the 27th of last month. Pana glanced at the beat up calendar tacked to the wall. Today was the 24th. They let out a sigh through their nose and focused back on the scanner, picking up the radio that was attached and pushing the βTALKβ button. They played a recording of the S.O.S. tone into the receiver before speaking.
βIf there is anyone who reads me, please come in. We need help. Again, if there is anyone out there who reads me, please respond. The city has been overrun. We are survivors who need help. Please respond.β They strapped a rubber band to the com so that the talk button would stay on and kept the S.O.S. on repeat, as it would stay for the next hour.
Then, through the front entrance came a voice and then another following suit.
βI just donβt understand why we have to go now. We havenβt had time to talk this through.β
βThatβs not your choice, Leo! Heβs my brother. Not to mention his husband and the others. Why canβt you get on board with this?!β
The first to come into sight was Akira, who stepped over the tripwire and disabled the intruder alarm up front. Then came Leandro, whose face was twisted in some sort of emotion that resembled either anger or sadness or maybe concern? Pana couldnβt tell.
βWell excuse me for being a little uncomfortable with up-and abandoning the only thing we know for certain is safe!β He shot in Akiraβs direction.
Akira approached Panaβs corner, paying notice to when they pointed toward the lit βOn Airβ sign and keeping his voice quiet.
βAny interference?β Pana shook their head. βHave you heard from Heirloom?β He tried to keep any twinge of hopefulness out of his voice, but shit, he needed good news. Panaβs frown deepened just so and then another shake of the head. Akira sighed and closed his eyes. A month was too long. They had to do something.
Leandro appeared behind Akira and put his hands on either side of his arms, rubbing up and down in a soothing motion.
βLook,β he said next to his ear, βI just donβt like the idea of taking you and Pana to chase after silence. If we donβt know what happened to them-β
Akira turned on a dime.
βDonβt go there.β He hissed in a whisper. And he stormed away.
Leandro looked at Pana and huffed. He reached into on of his jacket pockets and pulled out a package of gummy bears, tossing it to the ginger.
βAnything?β Head shake. βDamn. Guess I better go talk to him.β
βProbably.β Pana throws a green gummy bear at him.
βHey,β he smirked, pointing at them βdonβt waste those, theyβre hard to find.β Pana cracked a smile and threw another gummy.
βGo console Akira.β
βYeah, yeahβ¦β And so he left Pana to their tech and headed toward the second story ladder.
Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β - - - - - - -
Leandro peeked his head above the landing. Akira was sitting with his back to him, knees folded to his chest with arm around them, looking at the lilac evening sky through the gaping hole that made it less of a room and more of a balcony.
He climbed up and walked over, plopping himself down next to him and draping his arm over his shoulder. Akira laid his head against him without saying a word. They stayed quiet, just watching the sky, droids zipping through the air and collecting data on the conditions to report back to their homebase. Leandro spoke first, softly and with care dripping from every word.
βYou understand, everything I say comes from a place of love right? I need you to understand that.β
Leandro felt Akira take a deep breath against his body.
βI know.β He said. Another moment of quiet. βItβs just,β he sighed βI donβt know where he is. Dashi, a-and Dante and Sansa and Henraeβ¦ they could be lost or captured orβ¦ dead for all I know. And Iβ¦ I just need to know.β He finally turned to look Leandro in the eyes. He looked so deflated. Softly he added, βWouldnβt you want the same the for your family?β
It still hurt., but it was duller now. The topic didnβt knock the wind out of him like it used to. It didnβt cause him to double over and hyperventilate. And the ache he felt now wasnβt the same ache he got after hours of sobs racking his chest. Now it was more muted. Heβd almost come to terms with it. His family had all been at home when the invasion started. Cuba was hit so fast and so brutally, the damage and death toll was devastating. What few phone lines werenβt destroyed were jammed and nobody could seem to get ahold of anyone. Rescue teams that had been sent didnβt come back and eventually the world diverted their attentions toβ¦ to places that stood a chance.
The only family that could have evaded it was his sister Vera, whoβd been stationed in Canada during the attack. But even the military suffered. Wearing itself thin until corruption and panic all but tore it apart. Leandro stopped hoping. He made the very realistic assumption that everyone he cared about was gone. Heβs lucky Tadashi, Henare and Akira had found him when they did. That kind of mindset doesnβt bode so well in a place where death wasnβt that hard to achieve.
βYou guys are my family. All I want is to keep you safe.β He nudged against him so they swayed together for just a moment.
βWe can only live in safety for so long.β Β Hearing a catch in Akiraβs words, Leandro realized with a start that he was crying. Akira wasnβt a crier. He was more of a punch-holes-in-the-wall kind of emoter. He stared at his downturned face while he continued. βThe Hignue are closing in, theyβll have the city clean soon, weβd be lucky to get 3 more months here. Panaβs driving themself crazy looking for any shred of evidence Morgan and their family is okay and now Tadashi-β His shoulders shuddered and his words caught in his throat. Leandroβs brows knit together, and he looked on, heartbroken, at a boy who was so used to pushing his fear aside it ate him alive.
He turned and pulled Akira into his body and rubbed his back as he cried quietly into his jacket. He rested his head atop his and shushed him sweetly, looking out toward the edge of the city that used to taper off into a nice suburban area. Thingβs still smoked. Buildings lay crumbled against the skyline. Akira was right, of course. They didnβt have much longer here. They had hoped that Heirloom would make it to the Resistance base and give them the greenlight to follow by now. But when they stopped receiving telecommunications, shit hit the fan.
Leandro took a breath.
βWeβre going to go after them.β
Akira met his eyes, puffy and but wide with emotion.
βButβ¦ we take time to properly prepare.β He took one last over the fading color of the sky. βWe donβt go tonight, or tomorrow. We get our shit together. Then weβll go.β He turned back to meet Akiraβs gaze.
He doesnβt say anything. Just studies Leandroβs face before nodding. Thatβs all Leandro needed. He pressed a long, gentle kiss to his forehead.
They watched the darker hues takeover the sky and the moon grow brighter until it illuminated the sky in a soft pale yellow glow from behind a passing cloud. Akira retired downstairs to prep tomorrow, leaving Leandro gazing at the sky deep in thought, legs dangling. He thought about everything they were about to get into. About how the second they stepped foot beyond city boundaries they were completely at the hands of fate, who thus far, had appeared to be nothing but cruel. But the thought that kept making its way to the front of his mind demanded him to know what the future held. And he didnβt know how to answer that thought. Not even when he pulled the little box out of his pocket to look at the ring he held on to. Especially then.

A Question.
(@apinchofpaprika)
βHave you ever been in love?β
The question had caught me completely off guard. It was 2 am on a Sunday and we were standing near the pick up point after having just completed another successful mission. Leandro had been unusually quiet the whole time which was unnerving.
βWhat?β I asked, my eyes moving towards Leandro.
He didnβt even spare me a glance. βHave you ever been in love?β He asked again. Β βI uhβ¦ No I donβt think Iβve been in love with anyone,β I replied.
Leandro made a small noise of acknowledgement and nodded. We fell to silence. The question sat in my mind, making me wonder about what his mind had been so caught up in the whole time. Flying cars zoomed by us, the fresh after effect of rain making the city smell clean. I watched Leandro in silence, trying to figure out his mind. Music elsewhere was booming but here it was fairly quiet other than the honking of a few vehicles as well as the flashing advertisements of the city. Finally, I decided to ask Leandro the same question.
βHave you ever been in love?β I asked. Leandro was quiet before replying. βTo be honest,β He began, βIβm not quite sure.β At this I raised a brow. Leandro was always fairly confident. He never really seemed to have moments of confusion and if he did, they were always either loud and proud orβ¦ Silenced. Leandro was good at that. I hadnβt noticed before, but now, when truly thinking about it, Leo was too good at hiding things.
βWhat does that mean?β I asked.
Leandro chuckled. βI mean, there are moments when I feel in love with someone but then I go home and I think to myself, βWas that even real? Did I love them or was I justβ¦ Pretending?ββ
At this statement, I looked even more curiously at Leo than I had before. His hands were in the pockets and his blue turtleneck hugged his body tightly. His curly brunet hair was in mess that suited him nicely. And his blue eyes were lost somewhere. Lost in the city. In the flashing lights and the music and the cars and the mission. Among the advertisements and neon and cigarette smoke that filled our city. His eyes were lost in his thoughts and lost in the sound. Leandro noticed I had been staring and he looked over and smiled. I felt a heat creep up my neck but smiled shyly back.
βSo why do you question whether itβs real or not?β I asked. βWellβ¦ Donβt tell anyone,β Leandro replied, βbut itβs because Iβm afraid of losing myself to someone that wonβt love me back.β In that moment, I looked at Leo with different eyes.Β Β
βYouβre just like me,β I whispered.
βWhat?β Leo asked.
βNo, itβs nothing. Absolutely nothing.β βWait but what did you say? Surely you said something!β I shook my head and looked away. Β βNope, itβs nothing.β Leo muttered something to himself. I looked at him curiously. I moved a tad closer. βRepeat that?β I asked. Leo shook his head. βNo way,β Leandro replied. I huffed. βHey. Tell me.β A large grin curved onto Leoβs face. βNot a chance.β βTell me!β I replied. βCatch me if you can, gingerbread man,β Leo teased. βWhat the hell does that even me?!β I called after Leo as he began sprinting. βAnd weβre running away from the pickup point dumbass!β I yelled, stopping to see if we could end this dumb chase at the beginning. βPetra will find us sometime!β Leandro called back. I groaned and chased after him.
We ran like that for a while.
Splashing in puddles on the nearly empty sidewalks, passing shops and houses and whatever else. Iβm not too sure what I was thinking about that day. I knew I was definitely annoyed. But I think the thing that surprised me the most was what happened next.
Leo turned around and began running backwards. He laughed at me, taunting me for not being able to catch him. I huffed and sped up. However, just as I was about to grab Leo by the jacket, he slipped on a puddle, falling backwards and unfortunately bringing me down with him. Our heads hit one another causing a sharp, aching pain. βOw!β Leo exclaimed. I made a grunt of pain. βYouβre an ass,β I muttered. βYou too buddy,β Leo replied. I lifted myself up and off Leo and stood up. Leo burst out laughing as he lied on the wet ground, raindrops falling onto his face.
βWhat?β I asked.
βIβm about to do something really stupid.β
βYou always do stupid things.β
βHey Akira?β
βYeah?β
There was silence for a while. My eyes moved to Leo who was just simply staring at me. βLeo?β I asked. Β βYeah?β he replied. βYou said you were going to say something to me?β I inquired. Leo shook his head and pushed himself up, stumbling forward a bit before catching his balance. I watched him with careful attention. βI decided against it,β Leo replied. I watched him for a while, just quietly, trying to see if I could catch what he wanted to say through body language or get any sort of signal. There was nothing much though. I let out a quiet sigh. We silently agreed on walking back to the pickup point Petra had wanted to grab us at. Leo was oddly quiet. Again.
βWhy have you been so quiet?β I asked.
βWhat?β Leo responded, glancing up at me.
βWhy have you been so quiet?β I repeated. Leo sighed. βJust been thinking about some stuff.β I was surprised to hear that. He usually never wouldβve admitted something like that to me. A car splashed us as it sped by. βUgh!β I groaned. βGross,β Leo sighed. We glanced at each other and suddenly, out of nowhere, we just began laughing for no apparent reason. The laughter from both of us was hearty and genuine and it wasβ¦ Odd. A lot about today had been quite odd. However, strangely enough, I found myself to beβ¦ Okayβ¦ With that. βHey Akira?β Leandro asked. βYes?β I replied. βIβm ready to tell you what I wanted to say earlier.β
βOh? And whatβs that?β
βI love you.β
There was silence for a moment as I processed what Leo just said. Leandro began laughing, his face flushed from the embarrassment. I gaped at him.
βYou what?β
