Chapter Nine

The dark underworld of witches has taken over the godly realm of Gloucester Cathedral this week.

Production crews have parked trailers and filming gear on the green at the back of the world-famous cathedral for the second series of a prime time show.

Filming for Sky fantasy drama A Discovery of Witches – a show starring Matthew Goode - is taking place at the home of the tomb of King Edward II.

Breathing is somethin’ ye tend to take fer granted when ye have no trouble with it tae begin wi’. The Scottish Highlands are known fer having some of the cleanest air around the isles. Wi’ its rolling hills and spacious forests and bogs, farms and generally cold weather, I never noticed how much I hadna ‘ppreciated how much lungfuls of air could cost. I always said the Highlands were good fer the lungs. Being a Highlander meself, born and bred, there was pride when I spoke about it.

Oh, how I took such a thing like breath fer granted. And I paid fer it when I passed through the stones wi’ Claire, my wife.

I still dinna ken how she managed tae convince me to travel with her through the stones. Even with the promise of being a father to our wee bairn, somethin’ I wouldna get if I’d stayed for the Battle of Culloden, it shouldna been sae easy to sway my mind. But, i’twas. Almost as easy as breathing. Or so I thought.

I spent a good minute or twa tryin’ tae catch my breath, wheezin’ and hackin’ tae force my lungs tae cooperate. Claire was upon me the instant I started strugglin’. Her hands rubbed at the marred remnants of my back.

“Are you alright?” She asked.

I managed to choke out an “Aye,” before coughing more. Her hand didna leave my backside until I was takin’ in regular breaths. Then, hand in hand, we started makin’ our way away from the stones.
