i was at the zoo and just kind of vagueing out leaning on a rail and watching the duck pond and in the background a kid started yelling “he’s coming for you! he’s coming for you!!” and i thought it was some game she was playing with her family or something up until i felt a little hand grab my elbow and looked down to see this tiny wide-eyed child staring up at me with the world’s most serious expression and she said in a solemn voice

“he’s here for you”

and something reached out and grabbed my other hand

it turns out that a resident cockatoo has figured out that if it just waddles back and forth along the rail it can get the maximum amount of attention and headskritches with the minimum amount of flying and objectively this is very cute but at the same time this was very nearly the way that a grown adult died of a heart attack at the zoo

I just made the mistake of sneezing in my bedroom. The birds now know that I’m awake, and Morning Scream Fest has begun.

Morning Scream Fest usually starts between 7 and 8am at my house. Today at 7:35, I realized it had been awfully quiet. Had I just been so quiet working at my computer that the birds didn’t realize I was awake? So I performed an experiment. Out of nowhere, I started yelling, “BIRDS! BIRDS! BIRDS!” And then I yelled their names.

And I was met with ABSOLUTE SILENCE from the birds.

Then I ran down to check on them because I was like “they’re not screaming, wtf are they okay???” and I started to get worried. But they were totally fine and awake. Just confused. Apparently birds don’t know what to do if you scream in the morning before they do.

But then I realized the horrible truth.

I had become one of them.

I am one of them now.

I scream.

this morning NASA abandoned their mars rover Opportunity (aka Oppy) because it (she) got hit by a storm on Mars and it knocked her camera and wheels out and her last words to the team were “my battery is low and it is getting dark”. So, who else here struggled to pick up the “go away, you’re not wanted” social cue as a kid, which has made them so overly cautious as an adult that they end up having cool conversations with cool people but don’t want to be too friendly in case they’re missing the cue, and so end up making those cool people think that you don’t want to be friends with them?

Because, like, this is the Number One Thing that has fucked me up as an adult and I am so grateful to my friends who didn’t stop talking to me while I slowly figured out that, yes, they did actually want to be friends.
