Eddie’s behavior in this scene was so revealing — this is the first time we truly see him without his “mask” since shaving it in 806. In 707, he didn’t let Buck in, didn’t allow his nerves and concerns show, but here 808, he’s fully visible. He’s nervous, his twitching, his smile isn’t of joy but of concern and irrationality. He’s practically begging to be called out and told what he’s doing is stupid and there’s another route and all Buck can do is be supportive because he doesn’t have the “right” to push when they’re “best friends.” If Eddie were his romantic partner, he could ask that he stay, remain in Los Angeles and they could figure out Christopher together. Every season we are treated to questions about why don’t they confide in each other and this scene communicates this so fluency, with such easy: Buck and Eddie's level of emotional intimacy isn’t of the proper category; if they verbalize their feelings, the house of cards built around their “friendship” will come crashing down and they’re not ready for that. They both subconciously established a hard boundary as a means to protect not themselves, but the each other.
