Personal Biography Playlist
This was a fun assignment where we got to make a playlist and write how we relate to the songs, especially in terms of being a minority as it is a race, gender, disability class. Did we overshare? Probably! But we are proud of who we are and don't give a shit about hiding it anymore!
1. Abracadabra by Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga is one of the many artists we grew up listening to. My mom and us love to listen to “Born This Way” in the car. We personally loved “Bad Romance” as a kid. This newer song of Lady Gaga’s is our favorite though. Lady Gaga has said in an interview that the song is a protection spell. We found this really cool as we personally practice witchcraft. It is not talked about too often, especially in the mainstream, so it was nice to see someone so influential discuss it and incorporate the spiritual practice into her art!
2. All The Things She Said by Seraphine
Seraphine is not a real person. She is a character from the video game “League Of Legends”. We did not know this when we first discovered her though. We thought she was a VTuber singer. It was later revealed that she was a promotion for the new ingame character and later collaborated with the in game band K/DA. We got into League from this character and learned how to pay her. From this game we have met our two best friends and many others! We chose this specific cover from Seraphine as “All The Things She Said” is a popular sapphic song. Personally, we are bisexual with a preference for women, and panromantic.
3. BlackBoxWarrior – OKULTRA by Will Wood
Will Wood is known for his creative lyricism and mishmash of genres. The first two songs we could have easily identified as pop, but this one? Um, evil jazz we guess? The confusing nature of the song fits its theme of mental illness well. The protagonist of the song has BPD and is told CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) is not working. We relate to this song as we have been diagnosed with BPD. We also know what it is like to hit the ever so frustrating brick wall that therapy can feel like. Will Wood also has bipolar disorder, as we have also been diagnosed with. We resonate a lot with his music.
4. Confessions Of A Rotten Girl by SAWTOWNE
The number one thing we grew up listening to was Vocaloid songs. We loved how cartoon characters could come to life and sing. We especially loved how Vocaloid producers had a habit of telling stories through their music with their own protagonists and plot lines. This song is a lot newer but quickly became one of our favorites! In this song Hastune Miku (the Vocaloid singer) is struggling with accepting her hidden urges that her church tells her to keep repressed. It is a song that explores religious trauma. The main reason for our trauma based disorders comes from a very abusive Catholic school so this song serves as a great comfort.
5. I Am The Walrus by The Beatles
We have been told we have a very eclectic music taste. We can see how that is evident putting The Beatles in this list. We won’t pretend to know all of their songs but there are a handful that my mom and us love to listen to in the car. She is the one who first introduced us to them. Our personal favorite is “I Am The Walrus”. Honestly not sure why this one. We like the melody and lyricism, plus the special use of sfx like the joker laughing. All of their songs feel like an LSD trip. While we have never done LSD, from what we have heard described it sounds a lot like psychosis in a way. Something we have due to bipolar 1.
6. Monitoring by DECO 27*
Another Vocaloid song sung by Hatsune Miku but the Vocaloids are just the instruments. The song is by a different producer and THAT is what matters! Anyway, this is also a newer song but is special as one of our best friends introduced us to DECO 27*. In this song the POV character sees Miku outside of his door wanting to check on him. He deludes himself and hallucinates a whole scenario where she is madly obsessed with him. The imagery of the bright neon colors is similar to what we see during a psychotic episode. The idea of mental illness affecting one’s love is also a relatable feeling. Common in BPD.
7. Mucka Blucka by Chonny Jash
We would love to put the entire album this song is from here, but we cannot. We chose this one specifically as it so clearly paints a picture of what having DID is like. Something we have also been diagnosed with as we continue to torture our therapist by being quote “an enigma”. In this song there are three alters present. Heart, Mind, and Soul. Just a funny coincidence that our system also has three alters. This song and entire album really helped us accept who we are and to navigate the hardships. Yes it is a repeating loop as the album so artfully shows, but there is happiness to be found within it, especially through art. For Chonny Jash their art therapy is music. For us it is making YouTube videos and writing!
8. Paint The Town Blue by Ashnikko
We had already liked a few Ashnikko songs but imagine our surprise when she did a song for one of our favorite shows about our favorite character ever! The song is about Jinx who is a character originally from “League Of Legends”, but the song is about the version of the character from the Netflix show “Arcane”. Jinx is the best representation of psychosis and BPD we have ever seen. Well, season one Jinx is, season two ruined it but let us ignore that. The song shows Jinx’s personality well and also is a song about fighting the system. That is something we also try to do in a lot of our writing and YouTube videos.
9. ReDreaming Angel by Angels Of Delusion (San-Z)
“League Of Legends” used to be our favorite game but now it is “Zenless Zone Zero”. It was introduced to us by those same League friends and has now drained our wallet for all it is worth. Within the game is a fictional idol group called the Angels Of Delusion. The second we heard they were adding a Jpop girl group into the game we freaked out. Jpop and Kpop girl groups were the songs we listened to the most growing up and was a major social topic with our friends. The Angels Of Delusion are also special to us as coincidently each member of the group is VERY similar to each member of our system. Like almost creepily so.
Ado is a rising Jpop star who was introduced to us by those same friends. As you can see, we all have the same amazing taste. “Usseewa” stuck out to us the most from her songs as it shows the frustration of living within the system. In the song Ado breaks down and tells everyone to “Shut the fuck up” (that is the song title translated as well). She has a similar song cover “Aishete” that shows this similar struggle but from the prospective of school, while “Usseewa” focuses more on work and adulthood. These struggles are felt by most but neurodivergent people tend to feel frustrated by the system more often as it was simply not made for them. This song shows that well, while also hinting that really it was not made for anyone but the elites, “somebody else”.
Honorable Mention: Would have also done Randy McNally (No Love Like Christian Hate) by TX2 but don't feel like being expelled so.
