In honor of Earth Day, check out the newly digitized 1985 Archives of American Art documentary on sculptor David Barrâs âFour Corners Project.â Barr is seen above examining a model for the project, which was to inscribe a tetrahedron inside a sphere (not just any old sphere - in this case, the earth) and burying one of the actual corners at one of the four carefully mapped geographic locations. He traveled to Easter Island, Greenland, South Africa, and New Guinea to complete the project. You can watch the whole video on youtube through the link below. For more, see the smithsonianavarchivists post on this video today.

On the occasion of Sturtevant: Double Trouble, the first comprehensive survey in America of the late artistâs 50-year career, the exhibitionâs curator and MOCAâs director introduce a challenging and influential body of work, one that has been largely overlooked in the history of postwar American art.
Named for her lamentation of âthe perverse simultaneous double trouble of being ahead and being behind,â the retrospective presents over forty works that attest to Sturtevantâs profound, career-long commitment to the investigation of art history, as it happened in real time. By controversially ârepeatingâ the work of artists from Andy Warhol to Felix Gonzales-Torres, Sturtevant broke many taboos in the art world, and ultimately revealed a prescient understanding of visual culture.
MOCA Director Philippe Vergne had known Sturtevant for more than twenty years, and was among the enigmatic artistâs most ardent supporters in the United States. âShe was not waiting for history to capture and rubber stamp an artist.⌠She had this immediate ability to capture the most important aesthetic breakthroughs of her time.â
