Kanaya found herself lingering at the garbage can for a few seconds longer that she had intended as she gazed at the other girl from the corner of her eye. She bit her lip as she assessed her situation.
What should she do? Should she say hello? Should she ask for her name? Should she say anything at all? Would that be weird or out of the blue? Was it not already terribly obvious that Kanaya had been staring glances at her? If it was, then there was only one word to describe her behavior: creepy.
Kanaya let out a quiet sigh in exasperation. Why was she letting herself get so worked up? She was just a pretty girl in a coffee shop—no big deal. Plus, she could already feel Vriska’s glares urging her to hurry up. She walked back, distractedly weaving through a few tables and chairs. She purposely approached the other woman’s table again, just to get another quick peek.
Of course, she should have known that was a bad idea. However, the notion did not occur to her until her hip bumped a book that sat at the edge of the table and knocked it to the ground. Kanaya stood there, feeling completely mortified and totally unsure if she should pick up the book or flee the scene.
"Oh goodness, I’m so sorry."
Rose had been very studiously ignoring the woman’s approach, so when she felt the clatter of her book tumbling from her table she startled a little, looking up in surprise. Oh her eyes are a very pretty shade of green. She swallows hard, barely hearing the woman’s apology as she stares wide-eyed. Realizing she’s probably supposed to say something, Rose scrambles for words.
"O-oh, no, that’s quite alright."
She’s blushing furiously, she can feel it, so she leans down to retrieve the book and replace it on the table, this time safely away from the edge. Anyone else and she would’ve sent them along with a glare and perhaps a bit of deadpan snark about the offender’s intelligence, but now she’s all fluster and reassurance? This is getting ridiculous, Lalonde.
"There, no harm done. Don’t worry about it."
Yup. Really fucking smooth.
'No harm done.' Right. Of course--she just knocked a book over. It happens all the time.
Yet, despite her self-reassurances, Kanaya felt utterly humiliated. She really should have picked up that book after all. Wasn't it a bit rude to just stand there? Of course it was.
"Oh, well. That's good then."
It took everything she was capable of to not slap herself in the face. 'That's good then'? Of all things she could've said, she had to choose the one that made her look most like an idiot.
Kanaya shuffled away from the table as quickly as she could, making very sure not to walk into anything else on the way and sat back down at her seat. She ignored Vriska's questioning glances as she shielded her face with one hand and grabbed her cup with the other.
This really was not her day.

Rose’s eyes went wide when the woman stood up and started moving in her direction, and she stared very intently at her page without actually reading any of the words. What if she’s coming over to talk to her what will she say how does one converse with strangers this is why she used to make all of her friends online. For a moment she is in the grips of mindless panic.
Until the woman walks past her to discard a handful of napkins in the garbage can, and Rose berates herself. Stupid, stupid, presumptuous and vain. A beautiful woman like that would have absolutely no interest in her, she’s just a strange and unsociable child, a stranger in a coffee shop. This woman won’t give her the barest thought once she’s out of view.
She can’t help but look, though. She’s captivated and she’s not sure why, but it makes a not-entirely-unpleasant fluttery feeling take up residence in her insides every time she sets eyes on the stranger.

WHAT WHERE CAN I GET THIS WHAT
What a time to be alive.
Evening Dress
Givenchy
1955
Formal evening gowns were an essential part of a society lady’s wardrobe in the 1950s. Sumptuously embroidered and accessorised with jewels, these gowns provided a glittering show at receptions and balls, the opera or the theatre. Some were specially commissioned for a specific occasion and worn only once, whereas others bear evidence of alterations.
This dress is embroidered with silk thread and sequins from top to bottom, which would have been very expensive as it was done entirely by hand. It would have been sent out to one of the many specialist workshops in Paris, and each tiny sequin and stitch placed individually by a team of highly-skilled embroiderers.

Rose could see the woman watching her out of the corner of her eye, and it perplexed her. Maybe she was trying to catch her looking? Maybe she was just trying to catch a glimpse of the book she was reading? The idea that the other woman was looking at her for the same reason Rose was watching her flickered across her mind, but she waved it away. She already had a habit of behaving too arrogantly, she couldn’t entertain notions like that. Really, who would be looking at her like that?
Maybe she was looking because she thought her strange, the pale little girl by herself with a book.
She flushed a little, pressing her lips together—black-painted lips, she remembered, she did that on purpose, she wanted people to think her strange because she was strange, but all of a sudden she was worried about how this beautiful stranger saw her. Her brow furrowed in confusion—this hadn’t happened for so long, not since she’d hit her teenage years and decided she didn’t care what anyone thought. What made this woman different?
Kanaya couldn't help but feel a bit... antsy. After all, the only conclusions she could make about the odd girl was through quick peeks and, although she had made enough of those to create awkward atmosphere, she was dying to get a closer look. Kanaya couldn't help but feel that her curiosity was rather odd--even for her. Nevertheless, she couldn't stop thinking about the girl sitting a few tables away.
Kanaya's eyes darted around the table as Vriska rambled on and on, desperately trying to find an excuse to at least walk by. She found her chance when Vriska announced that she was too lazy to throw away her napkins.
"Here, let me do it," Kanaya said, maybe a bit too eagerly, as she reached over to grab Vriska's trash.

Rose immediately looked back down at her book, a blush creeping over her cheeks at being caught. Real fucking smooth, Lalonde, said part of her brain (the part that always managed to sound like Dave) as she took a long pull from her mug in a further attempt to hide her embarassment. After a few moments, she snuck another glace, taking in details even as she admonished herself for being a huge creeper. Carefully styled dark hair, creamy-tan skin, delicate features, and large, startlingly green eyes. She was stunning, she was gorgeous and Rose couldn’t help but glance over a few more times. She caught snippets of their conversation, ignoring the words and focusing on how the woman’s voice treated them, hints of an accent curling around the edges. She spoke carefully, pausing before beginning and enunciating very clearly.
Rose shook herself a little, trying to turn her attention back to her book. It was important for school, after all, she didn’t have time to be leering after strangers like some kind of—aw, hell, and it’s not like she could go introduce herself anyway; the stranger was with a friend, and it wouldn’t do to interrupt their day.
The other woman had caught her interest and held it tight throughout the time she sat in the coffee shop. Whenever Vriska looked away during their conversation, Kanaya took a split second to peek very quickly over her shoulder at the purple-eyed woman. Kanaya was enraptured, to say the least, as she stole glances at the pretty girl who sat a few tables away. She had short blonde hair that frammed her face and her large purple eyes held a sort of unfocused and bored expression as she gazed a the book in front of her. Her fingertips brushed her face as her cheek rested upon hand as she gazed at the book in disinterest.
When the other girl's eyes seemed to flicker, Kanaya turned back to see a rather peeved Vriska, gazing at her in impatience.
"Uh, yes," she said, disconcertedly. "You're probably right."
Vriska seemed to brush off the moment as she began her rant once again, still looking a bit annoyed as Kanaya gripped her mug. She wanted to steal another peek at the other girl, she really did, but she had already pushed Vriska a bit and knew that she would not be happy if she did it again.

This is the issue with being so well-read, Rose thought to herself wryly, eyeing the book in front of her. She’d realized, upon glancing over the syllabus, that she knew half of the assigned readings well enough that they bored her but not well enough to dicuss them at the level the professor expected—thus her dilemma. She could probably recall enough to get by and bullshit the rest, but…she sighed and sat back, taking a sip from her au lait and cracking the book open. Might as well do this right.
She was thoroughly disinterested before she made it halfway into the first chapter, which is why she looked up when the cafe door opened. Strange, not many people knew the place, as it hadn’t been open long, and it was too late in the afternoon for the few people who wandered in around lunch…
A pair of young women entered, chatting quietly. One was vaguely familiar in a I’ve-seen-you-around-town sort of way, dark haired and bright eyed with a bold, demanding presence. Rose put her curiosity about where she’d seen her before to the back of her mind to examine the other newcomer, and she—oh sweet jesus on a suitably hilarious vehicle is she ever pretty.
She had been listening to Vriska drone on and on for the past half hour since they began the stroll from their apartment to wherever Vriska had planned on going. She opened her mouth to make interjections during Vriska's rants every once in a while, but eventually resorted to looking around the streets with a rather passive expression on her face.
Eventually they had stopped so that Vriska could open a door. Kanaya looked up at the sign that hung above the establishment. 'Vantas Cafe.' it was called. She had not heard of it before, but to be fair, she was new. She stopped the door with her hand as Vriska walked in. She didn't remember Vriska mentioning that they would be stopping at a coffee shop, especially not in the afternoon which was, admittedly, odd. Nevertheless, Kanaya shrugged and strolled in, letting the door swing closed behind her.
She took a seat at the small table that Vriska found for them, looking around the coffee shop, appreciating it's simplicity and serene atmosphere. Yet, she couldn't shake an odd feeling that someone was staring at her. The shop was relatively empty so she couldn't possibly fathom who would even pay attention to an average girl that walked in. Her eyes flickered to the side and met with a pair of purple eyes that stared at her a few tables away.

You can’t help the wide grin that comes to your face, still in wonder of the fact that it’s so simple to just be happy, something you weren’t used to feeling without guilt or anxiety tagging along. You reach out to touch her hand briefly, fingers brushing along hers before pulling away, and curse yourself for not knowing how to show affection better.
Someday you’ll pack a bag and the two of you will saddle up and ride out at dawn and spend the day exploring the trails and talking and laughing and maybe eat lunch by the river and not see a single other soul until you come back well after dark. You’ll have her all to yourself and you don’t care if that’s selfish because sometimes you just do not want to share.
“I’ll certainly be able to find the time to come out more often. To be honest, I’ve been looking for a valid excuse to give to my mother. And once exams are over, we’ll have all the time in the world.”
You smile at her hesitancy and reach out so that your fingers are intertwined with hers. There is a second of silence before you carefully lean over to lay your lips upon her cheek, a bold move that brings a slight blush to your cheeks. You smile a bit proudly before regaining your cool composure.
"That would be absolutely wonderful."
You beam at her, then check yourself and smooth your expression into what you hope is one of smug calm, ignoring the flush that you can feel rising to your cheeks. You’re still unused to how much this woman makes you feel, when you’ve been so used to keeping it all behind carefully constructed walls.
“I’m very glad you think so, love. Do you think you’ll want to come back?”
You tuck a stray strand of hair behind your ear and smile at her. You think about how lovely it would be to ride freely along the paths behind Rose; how nice it would be to go as fast as you can, the wind brushing against your face fiercely.
How wonderful it would be to ride next to Rose. To reach out and hold her hand as you go; surprising her with a kiss on the cheek as your horse bounds up next to hers.
"I think I would love to come back very much."
