“strategize? at a time like this?” it’s a rhetorical question, but yooseung frowned in confusion anyway. at a time like what, exactly? he’s taking this a little too seriously than the average person, but he can sense how jaden was as terse and serious as him, as if their actual lives were on the line. then again, this was one of the reasons why yooseung enjoyed playing games with him. they worked well together. too occupied with his own horde of zombies, yooseung barely noticed the barrels jaden discovered until he pointed it out, and he gasps in amazement. “wait, shit—you’re right!” game-yooseung kills off the remaining zombie before running around game-jaden in circles, excited. “i can be the bait,” he offers. it will be foolish for them to launch themselves into the oncoming pack as a pair; they’ll be turning into zombie food within a nanosecond. “i can lead them to the barrels as close as possible… and if i take a shortcut, like, maybe after jumping over that—” he nods towards the grubby car situated right across from the aforementioned gas canisters, “you can blow them up?”

“i have the perfect blanket for that,” eugene says, eager to watch any of the movies jaden mentioned. “do you have any stuffed animals we can use?” his parents never took him to the theatre ever, the anticipation of getting to taste the real cinema experience was making him giddy: the buttery smell of freshly cooked popcorn, the muted excitement when the lights dim…  “how long will they be showing grease and mortal kombat for? i want to watch both,” he asks, voice lowering in hesitation. watching two movies in a row can be very exhausting; eugene can attest to that, after watching don giovanni and amadeus in one sitting, two of the very few movies his mother approved of. he knew grease, having been part of the orchestra for his school’s play, but he never got to watch the film. still, grease was familiar and easy, and it’s something eugene can talk about to a certain extent.

rolling her eyes as she felt jaden swing his leg over her, she shuffled once again to get into a more comfortable sitting position. but, she allowed him to invade her bubble regardless. they’d lived together for so long that little things like this were just habit for both of them. as he began to mutter about her doing her utmost to steal back a little extra blanket, he was cut off, and she was once again sent into a fit of giggles.   “oh wow. that was so high pitched,”   she commented through her laughter, clutching at her stomach. the finger being pointed at her only made her laugh that bit harder, until no sound was coming out of her mouth, the only telltale sign being her shaking shoulders.   “don’t sweat it. i’ll just use it for my own personal blackmail material. i’ll find something else to give out to everyone else,”   she replied with a satisfied smirk, reaching out to pat him on the shoulder.

hyunmin’s expression remained almost completely blank, but one eyebrow quirked up ever so slightly. he hadn’t really been expecting that answer, nor the nonchalance in jaden’s voice, but he respected the fact that he clearly didn’t let his misfortune have a hold over him. he was about to ask how it happened, but he bit his tongue. even he knew when there was a line and although most of the time he’d leap straight over it with no regard for anything else, jaden seemed like a decent guy, and he wasn’t in the mood for an uncomfortable conversation right then.   “it’s impressive what they can do these days,”   he said after a moment of silence.   “you want a fry?”   he asked, pushing his plate into the middle of the table.

it wasn’t like he couldn’t understand kiran.. he could, to some degree. he wanted to get the fuck outta here as fast as possible without leaving any traces of ever having been here. he wanted to get away and jack was thankful that he had given him a heads up. he knew for a fact that that’s more than he had given everybody else. to all other residents of san verto kieran simply vanished again, to jack he had given into the fire inside of him that kept telling him to run. it wasn’t for a loss of a friend, ‘cause jack knew … or well, he was pretty sure that he hadn’t lost kieran’s friendship. it was more just the fact that he’d left him all alone in this godforsaken town surrounded by idiots the lot. the grumpy boy who was already drunk enough to loosen up more than usual looked to his left at the other. oh right, he was here. “ it’s the weekend. don’t you have some party to be at or something? “ he tried to distance himself although his hand did grab at the brown paper-covered vodka bottle taking a huge swig of it.

hyunmin watched closely as jaden began to massage his leg. for a second, he felt a little guilty at not having noticed the man’s clearly desperate need for a seat, but it didn’t last that long. he wasn’t the kind of person that regretted anything, or felt bad about things. it was a good way to live for him - not so much for the people around him. he gave a nonchalant shrug.   “no worries. you can sit as long as you need to,”   he said dismissively. as irritated as he had been, jaden seemed nice enough, and clearly understood already that hyunmin wasn’t the most talkative person.   “what’s up with your leg?”   he asked after a pause. he also didn’t have much of a filter. if he had a question, he wasn’t going to hold back, no matter how invasive it might come across.

strategizing won’t help yooseung and jaden win this game, and if yooseung pauses to stop and think of ways to outsmart the… the system, his character would drop dead within five seconds, even less. yooseung shoots down two more zombies, internally grateful for the seemingly infinite ammunition he had. reloading ammunition was another bothersome feature shooting games had, but he supposes the ridiculous health bar damage made up for it. yooseung’s angry shouting dies down once he runs to where jaden was and snags the first aid kit. he feels temporary relief when his health bar rises back up; okay—he’s safe, for now, and with jaden beside him, they can work on killing off the zombies together. two is better than one, after all. “dude, dude, we’re doing it,” yooseung says loudly as the crowd began to thin out, “we can make it!”

cackling loudly, hana placed a hand on her stomach as she shook her head.   “oh come on, you should have seen that coming,”   she said as her laughter subsided. wiping at the now damp corners of her eyes, she let out a sigh and shook her head.   “i’m counting on you screeching like a little girl jj, it’s the only reason i put on these movies. a girl needs some blackmail material on her roomies,”   she teased, grabbing a packet of chips as soon as they touched the sofa. he tugged back the covers that she’d sneakily tried to gather towards herself, causing her to let out a huff. a roll of her eyes followed his statement, her hand reaching out the hit the play button before giving him a gentle elbow in the side.   “you know that you’d never want to live with anyone else. we all know i’m your favourite,”   she said with a smirk and another quiet chuckle.

                Stevie is passively watching JJ take the call right up until he hears him mention the words tape and Kim Kardashian.   Unable to help it,   she snorts around her hot chocolate,   pulling the cup away from her face when some of it trickles down her lips and she quickly reaches for a napkin to wipe it off.   Stevie quietly cackles as she listens to the rest of the phone call,   then allows herself to laugh out loud when JJ hangs up and explains his unfortunate situation.

       “Do you think they clicked on a Russian hotties in your area ad?”   She snorts,   then takes a proper drink from her cup.   “Oh,   uh,”   Stevie pauses and stares at the ceiling,   recalling what she’d last said,   “graphics card.   I think mine’s messed up,   the thermal paste or whatever.   The screen keeps shutting off mid-game whenever I play Genshin.”

the male couldn’t have hung up quicker if he tried . it was a curse really , carrying around his work phone which was in essence a ticking time bomb for idiots , old people and the technologically inept . “ i don’t know what it is about these pop-ups but there’s always one person that clicks on them . hot lesbian singles , milfs looking for a good time .. “ he extended a hand to gesture to stevie , “ -- russian hotties . like , have these people never had an internet safety lesson in their life ?? do they honestly think that san verto is full to the brim of sexy older ladies desperate for an average guy in his mid-forties . let me tell you , they couldn’t be further from the truth . “ 

hyunmin looked between the seat and the other male, then had a quick glance around the diner. every other seat was taken except the ones opposite him. with a smaller sigh, he gave him a quick nod.   "go for it,“   he said as he had a sip of his coffee. watching the other closely as he sat, he took another bite of his burger, chewing quietly during his observation. he knew a lot of faces around town, so there was a faint recognition there for him, but he was drawing a blank when it came to names.   “i’m min,”   he eventually added, dipping his head in greeting. he wasn’t a rude person really. he just preferred to be alone. small talk really wasn’t his forte unless he had a few drinks in him.

as jaden’s fingers brushed against her own, hana let out a loud laugh at the noise that escaped him.   "you’re such a girl,“   she teased, flashing him a wide grin as she finally suppressed her giggles.   "you can eat them, just chill out. it’s like you haven’t been fed in years,"   she responded with a fond smirk and a shake of her head. hana watched as he rose, glad that she didnt have to move. instead, she snuggled further under the blanket, pulling her legs up underneath her, completely engrossed in the movie. eventually jaden returned, and she instantly held out a hand, staring at the bag of chips he was carrying.   "hurry up, this is when it all starts to really kick off,"   she said, smiling sweetly at him, knowing full well that he had been hoping to miss the jumpscares. little did he know, she’d paused the movie while he was on the hunt for more snacks to make sure he wouldn’t miss a second.

making actual friends other than mike and stevie was something eugene hadn’t predicted—he was contented spending the rest of his life quietly navigating around town with his small circle of friends, hopping between university and the library without socializing. not that eugene was incapable of speaking to people! he was just shy, years of being cooped up at home with only his parents and private tutor rendering him awkward and rather terrible at reading social cues. behind a computer screen, however, under an online alias helped eugene become a little more confident when it came to interacting with people from all over the world. though it was harder to figure out people’s emotions through text, eugene had quick access to google and urbandictionary if he ever came across an unfamiliar word or ‘meme’, unlike talking to people in real time. plus, there was something magical about the curtain of anonymity, and a majority of eugene’s relationships had stemmed from them, including his friendship with jaden. “what movies are they showing right now?” he asks, “i haven’t been to the cinemas yet, actually. i kind of want to go.”

“this is fucked up, shit, fuck, motherfucker,” yooseung shrieks, desperately searching for a first aid kit, a potion, or whatever that could replenish his rapidly declining health bar. the zombies keep coming. by this point, he’s too prideful to lose, cursing at the big monitor in front of them and ignoring the pointed glares of overprotective mothers hastily covering their kids’ ears. he has never worked in an arcade before, but he’s confident that all the machines truly were rigged, whether it be an innocent crane game, fighting games, or shooting games like this. “when will this end?” he yells as his character swiftly snipes at a zombie that had almost pounced at him, “ i’m going to die! where the fuck are the kits?”
