A Box Full of Color
Everyone talked about the excitement and danger of spy craft. No one ever mentioned the endless paperwork Twilight thought as he walked into the stationary store. He needed to pick up more typing paper. He had a report due to WISE tomorrow. As much as heâd like to blame his overbearing employer, they werenât the only reason the Forger household went through paper so quickly. Anya much preferred smooth white typing paper to her rough grey newsprint coloring block for art projects. He couldnât say he blamed her. On his way to the register, he grabbed a new box of crayons. Heâd noticed that some of her colors had been wearing down.
Twenty minutes later Twilight entered the Forger apartment to a delightful sight. Yor and Anya were sitting around the coffee table, and Anya had already started her homework. âIâm home.â
âWe are too.â Anya responded.
âWelcome back, Loid.â Yor said
He reached into the paper sack he was holding and put the crayons down on the table. âHere.â Anya immediately reached for them. âFor after youâre down with your homework,â he said sternly. She returned to the worksheet with an enthusiasm that promised more speed than accuracy. He should have waited until after dinner.
âDone!â Anya slammed her pencil down and reached for the crayons.
âWhile you try out your new crayons, Iâll make us some tea.â Yor said as she got up and headed toward the kitchen.
Twilight picked up Anyaâs worksheet. Sheâd forgotten to carry the two on this question and here sheâd clearly just tried out different numbers without understanding the formula.
âPapa, you should color too.â Anya interrupted his thoughts. She magnanimously handed him her old box of crayons.
âI have things to do.â
âIt would be koala-tea time,â she said looking at up at him with large shiny eyes. He wavered; quality time was important for small children.
âWhat should I draw?â
âWhatever you want,â Anya said.
Twilight sat down and reached for a piece of paper.
He was still coloring a few minutes later when Yor put the tea tray down next to him.
âOh my! What a wonderful picture!â
Yor was such a natural at this. Her praise would nurture Anyaâs developing self-esteem.
âItâs adorable!â
He glanced over at Anyaâs drawing of a giraffe. He supposed it was kind of cute.
âAnd so accurate!â
That might be taking things a little too far. It was purple.
âAnd Anyaâs giraffe is wonderful too!â
Wait, she hadnât been talking about Anyaâs drawing, sheâd been talking about his. Twilight laid down his crayon.
âCan I see?â Anya asked. He handed her his drawing, a crayon sketch of Anya drawing a purple giraffe.
She looked at it and tapped her lip with a crayon. Did she not like being drawn? Was she upset? Should he-
âPapa, you donât have much imagination, do you?â
âYou said to draw whatever I want.â Twilight retorted.
âOh, these are both going on the fridge!â Yor exclaimed.
