Maybe I’m just a big ol’ nursey nerd, but I want some fantasy/magic/whatever that focuses on healing and healthcare! We’ve got these brave heroes that go to the ~*magical infirmary*~ and are healed and back to their storyline. I’m so interested in the process of healing, but it’s just a secondary consideration to whatever quest the main character is on. What about the healers? What is their magic, their story? Tell me about what medical magic is like, what its limitations and physical costs are. Show me the witchy students learning their craft.

Honestly at this point I don’t care if nursing gets washed out of the picture and it’s just magical medical students. I want something that’s more substantial than “bippidy-boppity-boo, no more boo boo for you!” and then the plot just moves on.

Lol, any book/TV recommendations y’all?

It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come in 5 years…when Sana Amanat and I first sat down to create this character, inspired by Sana’s own childhood experiences, it was the first time in the history of the Big Two that a Muslim editor and a Muslim writer were working together on a book with a Muslim lead character. It was a very scary place to be. Most of the time when you’re the “first X to do Y,” what matters most is not what you, personally, achieve in that moment; what matters most is the path you lay for those who will come afterward and achieve greater things. You absorb the initial shocks, you clear away some of the stones obstructing the way forward. And then, hopefully, the people who come after will have an easier time. Sana and I could not be happier that Kamala has grown into something that will outlive us.
