Lake Studio Mix of the Month - June 2017
5-4-3-2-1 by Ali Sellin 2017
Recorded, mixed and mastered at Lake Studios (Kelowna, Montreal)
Ali Sellin is a traditional country artist from Alberta. Zachari and I met her when we were on tour in 2015, playing a show at Ye Olde Jar Bar in Medicine Hat. She said she wanted to make a record with us and we said yah! let's do it. This song comes from her second album that she has recorded at Lake Studios called Burnt River. www.alisellin.net
“you have such a great sense of what works and plays sweet“ Ali Sellin
This mix features Ali's classic country vocal delivery, and her upbeat hooky songwriting. It was lots of fun to arrange. It kicks off with Zach's drums (recorded at Lake Studios, Montreal) and Andrew's electric guitar along with some handclaps to give it a happy party vibe. I particularly love the tone of my 1973 Gibson ES335 through my Fender Deville amp - which you hear so clearly before the piano, organ and bass come in. That guitar and amp is a magic combination that had been heard on lots of great recordings - and its irresistible. The track also features the piano chops of one of our go-to studio musicians, Eric Disero as well as Ali's longtime bass player Bill Coffee - who recorded his part at Absynthe Studios in Medicine Hat. I think what really makes this mix work is Ali's lead vocal, the back-up gang vocals and the great groove that makes you want to jump up and down and sing along.
