a-little-oopsie-daisyâ:Â
It was the first thing out of her mouth, probably not the most tactful and definitely not the most intelligent.Â
Immediately, she felt her heart lurch, her head a little fuzzy as she tried to process what heâs said. That last bit rang loudly in her ears, like a super-amplified echo that ricocheted through her head.Â
The thing most people donât know about Daisy, is that sheâs got a more complicated relationship with feelings than⌠most people. Maybe things would have played out a little differently if heâd just stopped at Justin writing the letter, but he kept going and about twenty different red flags were raised out of pure instinct.Â
No - no, no itâs not, you canât know that, youâre wrong - thereâs a difference, she knew, but did other people? Other people, people not like her, used that interchangeably, did he know? He couldnât possibly know, that was stupid, that was stupid, no. No.Â
She swallowed thickly, and forced something that resembled a smile onto her face. She wasnât entirely sure it worked. âThatâs - really sweet of you, Travis,â she started, âI - I mean, Iâm flattered, really, but⌠baâ but we havenât really⌠known each other that long⌠Iâm just sort of⌠surprised, I guess.âÂ
His hands were already shaking just doing this, and.. maybe that was funny somehow. After all, heâd been a combat medic in war, heâd been under way more stress than this, right? But- Well, relationships were complicated. Very complicated, and he knew it. And not just because of his education in psychiatry either.
âI- Right. I know it- it hasnât been that long, but..â No. No buts. Everything that came before âbutâ was bullshit. That was what Justin always said. He shook his head, taking off his beanie to run a hand through his hair a moment. Say something, stupid. Just say something!
âI.. Iâm sorry.â He offered. âItâs.. Iâve made this pretty awkward, huh?â A hesitant smile, and he felt his face flushing. A deep breath, and he tried again. âLook, you can just tell me off if you want. I came on real strong, I bet, and.. Yeah. Big dumb Travis is at it again.â A sort of shaky little laugh, and he took a step back, realizing that heâd been moving just a bit too close all while heâd been blabbering on. Donât do that, Travis. Youâre a big guy, donât scare her. He mentally scolded himself, and again, he tried to smile. But.. Well, he probably wasnât doing too great at it at this point.
