In the classical evolutionary sense, We’re talking a creature with basically no natural defense mechanisms that has managed to have a booming population across the entire planet, save Unova. Its natural uselessness is the only defense it has and it’s a perfect one. It’s basically inedible for humans, meaning it’s probably mostly inedible for predatory Pokemon. Definitely not worth the effort of hunting and for how little it gives you. This even despite the fact that it lacks the gland that lets the majority of Pokemon produce toxins in their bodies (one of the few Pokemon that can’t learn Toxic). Its lack of combat abilities makes an an unappealing catch for all but the most dedicated trainers, meaning they, too, leave Magikarp alone. If anything, the evolution into Gyarados makes it significantly less viable in the wild by raising its aggression so high, meaning even if it has no natural predators it’s gonna run afoul of something that can defend itself eventually. Magikarp never would.

I love this dumb fish.

Only the very richest of trainers can afford terrariums big enough to allow their exotic magikarp strains to grow into full adults. Then again, making sure every fish swallows an everstone is a real pain, too.

Magikarp is a pathetic excuse for a Pokémon that is only capable of flopping and splashing. This behavior prompted scientists to undertake research into it.
