“We hope you could make it!” read the invitation.

It arrived three weeks ago in a brightly colored envelope, decorated with hand-drawn stars and crooked smiley faces. In oversized letters, the front of the card declared “Career Day Heroes!” Inside was a cheerful request from a local elementary school asking if Dr. Rebecca Chambers would come and speak to the students about being a scientist.

She had confirmed her attendance on the spot, with absolutely zero hesitation about squeezing the visit into her already jam-packed calendar.

“You know, you can always send in a replacement,” Billy pointed out, a mug in his hand. “Just saying.” He lifted his free hand in playful surrender.

“And miss out on meeting future scientists? No way,” Rebecca said as she dropped an imposing stack of papers onto the table.

Billy smiled into his coffee. “Got plans for the questions they might throw ya?” He had declined to participate every time she brought up the program, calling it “a disaster waiting to happen”.
