It’s for my people, I whispered to nobody but myself, placing a gentle hand on my abdomen to quell the potential nausea from setting in. I close my eyes as I sighed softly, swallowing the last of my anxiety.

A familiar set of footsteps approached my rear, my wedding gown too wide for them to approach any closer.

It was time. With all the courage I could muster I blinked my eyes open, instantly meeting a pair of brown eyes I have gotten used to, a pair I have grown to love.

“Don’t you know it’s bad luck to see the bride before the wedding?” I teased him with a small smile.

He snickered lightly. “But alas, your highness, it isn’t I you’re getting married to.” His face softens.

“I know,” I murmured, shifting my gaze back, meeting my own sad eyes again.
