Writerâs Block
In one sentence is the spark of a story. Ignite. Mission: Write a story, a description, a poem, a metaphor, a commentary, or a memory about this sentence. Write something about this sentence. Be sure to tag writeworld in your block!
Dialogue prompts
Person A: You are the human equivalent of a fidget spinner.
Person B: Whatâs that supposed to mean??
Person C: Youâre banned in many schools across America.
You die and go to hell. Hell, however, was not what you expected. Itâs not a burning pit of torment, but rather just earth, sans all the good and nice people.
You have to stay until you can turn yourself and another person good enough to ascend.

âYour curiosity has gotten us into so much trouble.â
âSomething like this needs careful planning and steady hands. I am not capable of the first thing and Iâm sure youâve noticed that my hands are definitely not stable.â
âDo I have to spell it out for you? It was never just a crush!â
âIâm sure we can both come to the easy conclusion that this plan is bad.â
âYou are a walking disaster and I have to protect you.â
âIâm a quick thinker, but not when it matters most, I guess.â
Hi, do you have any tips on how to make your writing flow better? I often find myself getting frustrated because I can't seem to make my writing flow nicely. Thank you!
Hey there!
I made this post a while ago: https://writing-central.tumblr.com/post/155976991008/hi-first-i-just-wanted-to-say-that-your-blog-is
If that doesnât help, send in another ask once I open the ask box up on Friday with more information.
Here is a body language chart! Have at it you guys!

5 Most Common Mistakes with Dialogue
As an editor, Iâve been thinking about how I need to do a post on some of the most common mistakes I see in dialogue. Many are a matter of fine-tuning, moving from a great writer, to a professional one.
Dialogue Tags Donât Match the Dialogue
As Iâve mentioned before, Iâm not wholly against alternative dialogue tags (âgroaned,â âcried,â âyelled,â âlamented,â etc.), and I think they can be particularly effective when the dialogue and the context of the story canât portray the way that itâs said. For example:
âThatâs great,â Melody groaned
But sometimes the dialogue tag honestly doesnât fit the way itâs said. Itâs hard to give an example of this in a blog post, because often whether or not the tag fits the dialogue depends on the context of the story. But look at this:
âElephants use their skin folds to crush mosquitoes,â Milo whined
The direct dialogue doesnât sound like whining. The content doesnât sound like something to whine about, and the structure doesnât sound like whining. But that is the chosen dialogue tag. It doesnât fit.
âElephants use their skin folds to crush mosquitoes,â Milo said matter-of-factly.
But sometimes you get weird combos like this:
âElephants use their skin folds to crush mosquitoes,â Milo whined matter-of-factly.
I donât know about you, but âwhined matter-of-factlyâ sounds like something thatâs pretty difficult to pull off.
Here are some more examples:
âI need to lose weight,â Taz wondered.
âCan I check into my hotel room now?â Kelly raged.
âWant to pick up the groceries?â Katie exclaimed.
Sure, grammatically, they are fine, but other than very rare occasions, the tags arenât appropriate for the direct dialogue. Make sure what you write matches.
Modifiers Donât Match the Dialogue
Some people really love using modifying phrases (participial phrases) with their dialogue tags. Again, Iâm not against this, but like anything, it can be overused, and more than that, it needs to make sense. A modifying phrase after a dialogue tag is adding information to the dialogue tag. Â It works as an adjective. Here is a fine example.
âDo you ever sunburn?â Manny asked, squeezing sunscreen into his palm
âSqueezing sunscreen into his palmâ is a modifying phraseâit adds information to âManny asked.â Because it functions similar to an adjective, itâs also saying that Manny squeezed the sunscreen into his palm at the same time he asked âDo you ever sunburn.â Not after. The same time.
Here is a problem example:
âGrab the gun!â I yelled, holding my breath as a cloud of smoke came our way.
You cannot yell and hold your breath at the same time. So this is a problem. But you can easily fix it:
âGrab the gun!â I yelled, then held my breath as a cloud of smoke came our way.
OR
âGrab the gun!â I yelled. I held my breath as a cloud of smoke came our way.
OR
âGrab the gun!â I yelled, and I held my breath as a cloud of smoke came our way.
But NEVER
âGrab the gun!â I yelled, holding my breath as a cloud of smoke came our way.
Other times, the participial phrase doesnât match because it doesnât fit with the dialogue (usually it doesnât logically match in length).
âYes,â she said, putting her dress, socks, and pajamas in a suitcase and then the luggage on the floor.
You canât tell me she put her dress, socks, AND pajamas in a suitcase AND then put the luggage on the floor the same time she said âYes.â Â Unless sheâs Quicksilver from X-Men, itâs not possible to do all those things during a one-syllable word.
You can fix it like this:
âYes,â she said, putting her dress in the suitcase. She added her socks and pajamas, and then placed the luggage on the floor.
Some writers say you should try to leave out participial phrases like this altogether, since cognitively it is difficult for the reader to imagine both things happening at once. Iâm personally okay with it and donât think itâs a big deal. They just need to make sense.

Fictional Kiss Prompts
So I borrowed a bunch of these fictional kisses from this post and made it up into a prompt list. Feel free to reblog of course!
breaking the kiss to say something, staying so close that youâre murmuring into each otherâs mouths
moving around while kissing, stumbling over things, pushing each other back against the wall/onto the bed
kissing so desperately that their whole body curves into the other personâsÂ
throwing their arms around the other person, holding them close while they kiss
hands on the other personâs back, fingertips pressing under their top, drawing gentle circles against that small strip of bare skin that make them break the kiss with a gasp
lazy morning kisses before theyâve even opened their eyes, still mumbling half-incoherently, not wanting to wake up
routine kisses where the other person presents their cheek/forehead for the hello/goodbye kiss without even looking up from what theyâre doing
being unable to open their eyes for a few moments afterward
one small kiss, pulling away for an instant, then devouring each other
staring at the otherâs lips, trying not to kiss them, before giving in
when one stops the kiss to whisper âIâm sorry, are you sure you-â and they answer by kissing them more
a hoarse whisper âkiss meâ
following the kiss with a series of kisses down the neck
starting with a kiss meant to be gentle, ending up in passion
a gentle âi love youâ whispered after a soft kiss, followed immediately by a stronger kiss
when one personâs face is scrunched up, and the other one kisses their lips/nose/forehead
height difference kisses where one person has to bend do wn and the other is on their tippy toes
kisses where one person is sitting in the otherâs lap
kisses meant to distract the other person from whatever they were intently doing
top of head kisses
