Thought I’d try my hand at designing my own version of Cube!
I was inspired by others who interpreted the triangles they wore to give them cat ears, so now I thought it’d be cute if I gave them a cat hoodie! I chose a pink and blue color scheme, as well as some gear/buzzsaw patterns on their hoodie to reference their fight in the game, and I thought the pastel colours would fit them well because they’re a sweetheart.
Their fight is my favourite in the game, too. It’s just so awesome. Though it’s kind of saddening to see their mental breakdown again after you lose , which is a long lead up to the part where the fight actually begins…
Fan art of the week #3 !
That fight impacted me emotionally more than it should have…
EQUIPMENT I USE FOR TWITCH
I have a Logitech quickcam HD1080 .
I have a greenscreen on my wall for the layout :
I have two lights like this for video quality (the image quality gets WAY better with this) :
As for the giveaway animation, you can download it here.
My Mic is a Editor’s key SL 300.
Flash Tool (jsfl): Mass Scale
So you created your character, animated it and it looks awesome! Only problem, you realized it should have been 150% bigger or smaller, and if you scale each sprites your animations becomes f***cked up, you have to reanimate everything, or scale it up ingame and it looks awful.
Well not anymore! This tool takes everything in the library and scales it as you wish (1 = 100%). Take your animations requested, put it in a separate .fla, run this .jsfl and voila! Everything’s scaled and your animation are adjusted. (Note : If you run it in Flash CC, Flash looks like it’s going to crash but it’s actually computing, give it some time and love).
This little .jsfl helped us so many time at Berzerk, and still help us today. Hope it’ll help you as well!

Equipment & Softwares I use
Coding:
- I use FDT PowerFlasher it's based on Eclipse.
- The language is ActionScript 3.
- I use Github and SourceTree for Version control.
Animation, Art, Level Design:
- I use Flash CC for level design, collision placement, or whatever task that require a lot of back and forth between code and visual (Enemy placement on the screen for example). It's the equivalent of my 'scene' in Unity. I also do a little bit of animation here and there, but I draw like sh**.
- Etienne and Marc (the two other co-founder of Berzerk Studio) draw and animate in Flash as well. Sometimes they use Photoshop, but we mainly do everything with Flash.
Sound Design:
- I use Audition CC for sound/music design. I sometimes have to cut music to make them loop, or do little sound tweaks but I’m not sound designer. I can do the job, but I’m no professional.
Video Editing:
- I use Premiere CC for video editing. I learned how to do it by messing around with it. Otherwise, I watched that whole hour of editing by Hank Green on Youtube that taught me a lot.
For Twitch:
- I use OBS Studio, it’s free and more powerful than xSplit. Was using xSplit before, but ran into lots of problem when combining with flash animation over time. - I use LachhhTools for the new follow/sub/cheers/donation notification.
- The music playing is from this playlist :
*****
But Flash is dead! Why u no Unity3d you f'king newb lawl?!?11?
Many reasons :
- Expertise : I've been using Flash for the past 8 years. I'm way more comfortable and fluent in ActionScript 3 than I can be in any other language.
- Art : The artists I work with all use Flash to draw and animate. Using the same software for code and visuals is pretty cool when you work as a team.
- Less Back and forth : If I didn't use Flash, there would be an extra step in the workflow between the art and code. Any time I want to test something that rely on visuals/animation, there's an extra step to be made to import the visual. It may be little, but it's an extra effort nonetheless. With Flash, everything is in the same software. We draw, animate, CTRL+Enter and BAM, it's in the game. Pretty cool when you prototype.
- Compile time. The compile time at the end of a project is around 3-5 seconds in Flash while the same project in Unity3D takes around 15 seconds. It's long enough that I often end up opening Youporn Facebook or Twitter and spend 10 minutes not working.
- I DO use Unity3d. At the end of the project, I port everything in Unity3d. I made a lot of tools to port the code, visuals and animations. I like Unity3d for the cross-platform and performance. It's a pretty cool engine.
I still love you if you don't use Flash.
I often say that I'm using Flash, but I don't recommend Flash if you're starting up. It has it's pros and cons like any tool out there but if you're starting up, I suggest something like Unity3d or GameMaker.
In the end, remember that
People don't play code, they play games
You’re the best!

A game about Shapes. And beats.
I’ve been working on that project for 4 years. It all began when I randomly bought an album from the excellent Danimal Cannon & Zef. I fell in love with the album and. Fast forward a couple of months, I went to a Game Jam here in Quebec called ‘Pixel Challenge’ and made the first level ‘Chronos’. We really liked the little prototype so we spent another day polishing it and sent it to the Indie Megabooth almost as a joke.
We got picked.
Now we had to make a REAL game, because it was about to be shown in front of thousands of people. So we created a couple more levels, added multiplayer, made the dash mechanic and all the backbone of the game in about 2 weeks. Once at PAX, we won a couple of awards so apparently we had something solid in our hands!
Four years later, it’s finally out. By far the biggest project game I ever worked on.
“If you ever hurt me or my loved ones, I will find you and I will break you.
No magic, no technology, not Treeangle, not even Dark Gods themselves wont save you!
Because there is nothing I cannot do!”
Music: BOSSFIGHT - Sovereign
[Hey lachhh, you know how the square occasionally curses from time to time in Just Shapes and Beats? Well, what if there was a button that let you do that in the battles?]
We had a feature to allow player to do some fireworks and dance in multiplayer, we had to remove it to be sure we get everything in time. With that said, the curse anim in challenges is a great idea! Thanks for sharing :)

Zombidle! We’ve always been big fan of Idle games like Clicker Heroes, Cookie clicker and Adventure Capitalist. I also really liked Candy Box, the way it was unfolding to the player was a big inspiration for Zombidle. We wanted something that always unlock new features, new content, always expanding. Released in March 9th 2016, we are still to this days updating the game every two week-ish. It’s by far the game that has the longest life we ever did.
The cool thing with Zombidle : it’s a great platform for players to contact us directly. There’s notification in the game when we are live on Twitch, so they can see us working as we go, and ask us questions. It really helped make the connection with the community. We’ve also been super transparent that this game helps us get funds and feedback for our bigger games like Just Shapes and Beats and Infernax and the players appreciated it.
I’m also personally super addicted to this game.
This is one of those weeks in the early stages of a production where you can’t seem to focus on what you should do first. I’m trapped in an “unproductiveness” kind of loop where every time I start working on something, I realize I can’t keep on working on it as long as something else isn’t all figured out.
Before I can work on the game art, I need to know how the characters and background settings are gonna look like, but before I can do that, I need to know how the game is going to be played… So I need to know the mecanics, upgrades and battle system… Is there going to be a level up system as well, an inventory? Is there going to have heavy dialog narration, or everything will be revealed through action and notes lying around? What’s the main difficulty of game? Finding your way out or fighting enemies? Oh yeah and about those enemies… who are they? Monsters? Evil dudes? Robot dinosaurs?? What happen when you die ? Do you have limited ammo? Secret passages? Multi-ending? Hard mode? …
So yeah, basically I’m screwed. The only way I know through this is to soldier on and write down every cool ideas that goes through my mind even if I don’t know how they are going to be connected with each other yet. Eventually the bad ideas least awesome ideas will be discarded, and the greater ones will find their way naturally into the mix. Above are some early sketches I made a couple of weeks ago. As you can see, I still didn’t quite nail the main character’s desing yet. I want him to look somehow like Korgoth of Barbaria (if you don’t know Korgoth, I urge you to google it asap), but with a Rambo twist to him. I want him to look badass but kind of dumb a the same time. I also started thinking about how the “door system” is going to be like. Yup, even something as simple as doors needs to be causiously planned. I need to know what they look like depending on what is required to open them up on every angle. This is actually more challenging than I thought it would because of the camera angle used for the game which makes the doors on the side and back walls hard to distinguish. I’ll keep on drawing stuff like these for the next few weeks, more to come. :D
Awesome post by Marc from Berzerk Studio.
This is just a quick update I did to let you know what's going on on my side. Plus, a little Christmas gift! See you soon!

I've been an indie game developer for 6 years now! Woot! The thing I'm the most proud of, is being able to be a father of three kids, and provide for my wife and kids with our games.
It's one thing to follow your dreams, but to do so while sustaining a family stays my biggest achievement.
It is possible guys!
Hey!
Today we talk about Internet comments! When you send your creative work on Internet, things can get.... messy. Random hate from Internet can break a guy's heart, sometimes even making them call it quits. This video talks about games, but it easily apply to any creative works. Like any other creator out there, we receive our share of shit-talk, and here are my advices to deal with it. Enjoy!

Sky Quest is a project I started outside of Berzerk's hour in 2011. I worked on weekends and evenings, which is something I can't do anymore because... three kids.
I wanted to try a serious theme for this game, with a serious story and stuff. Turned out, it's really not my cup of tea. I personally prefer doing weird and funny games, stuff that are bloody and over the top ridiculous, which is what Berzerk stands for usually.
But! I do enjoy and am very proud of the game anyway. I like the gameplay, even though it has some issues and becomes a little repetitive after a while. I know that I could do better than this, but after working on it for three years and spending ton of money on it (especially to revamp the UI), I just wanted to release it to go work on something else.
The reception was AWESOME, I was scared to death to release this game because of the microTransactions, but players were very supportive and respectful. This has shown me that if you're transparent with your players, they will understand you, and support.
There's a few people who still called us "fucking idiots" but it's cool Internet, I still love you.
