"Oh, Dr. Alphys. I, ah... I don't know." Octavo combs his hair out of his face, restless. "Perhaps the stress of the play is getting to me. Some of the scenes just aren't working and I can't put my finger on why!"
Alphys knows that Octavo takes his plays seriously, but to be so stressed that he forgets the names of his cats, or how many he has in the first place isn't normal for him, right? She knits her brows in concern, then comes up with an idea.
"You know, I'm, uh, I'm n-not a playwright or anything like that β" (Aside from her Mew Mew stage play fanscript.) "β but, um, I could look some things over if you need some help with the rewrites!"
"Why can't I remember what I named my cats. I have... five? Six? Perhaps I should go see a doctor."
Didn't he already do that? Why can't he remember?
"You, ah... Are you feeling okay? Have you hit your head, or... do you have memory problems?"
Alphys could never forget the name of her cat! Or, at least the cat that she thinks comes to eat her food every night.
"That's right! As long as we have people by our side, there isn't anything we can't deal with!" While she may not have the rest of the Sons of Calydon, she could still meet new people and make new friends during her time here.
"Where I'm from, Intelligent Constructs are robots who have passed The Forbidden Fruit test. Billy is one of them, and he's one of the most reliable, cheerful people you'll ever meet!" Aside from herself, of course. "He was, and still is our champion fighter, alongside Lighter. He was also a part of our gang for a while and is like our little brother."
Alphys smiles, glad to make a new friend in this world. Though Undyne and most of the others aren't here, it's people like her β Burnice, she thinks, going off the name of that special? β that help Alphys feel less alone. (She should probably introduce herself, too.)
"Th... The forbidden fruit test?" Alphys scratches her chin. "Is... is that anything like the T... Turing test?"
"Oh! And I'm, ah, Alphys, by the way! Don't think I've in... introduced myself yet."
Zandik froze when his co-worker called him out so abruptly, having his back turned to her as he himself took inventory of the medicine supply which was usually locked away in a hidden cabinet. It was indeed protocol to request new material when they were running low, however, they have been running low fast, which would only raise more suspicion. So, the nurse tried to brush it off.
But with Alphysβ attentive eye, he knew he couldnβt fool her for too long. βUhm, well, you seeβ¦β, he stuttered, fidgeting with and clicking the child-safety lid of the medicine bottle he was holding. βThere has been an few cases of emergencies lately that required a little more attention than usual.β
He wasnβt entirely lying. The theater department professor β Prof. Octavo as he had later learned β was one of these cases, paired with the out-of-protocol house visits he had been doing, and certain students getting in trouble with increased frequency, they were basically burning through their months supply within a week.
"There... there have been?"
Alphys thinks for a moment. She hasn't caught up with her co-worker lately.
"Um. I guess I've missed a few things, huh. You, uh, you're not in trouble or anything like that, we just, uh, should put in a request soon. Yeah."
If the swim coach she's been spending time with lately were here, she'd encourage Alphys to stand up for herself, but right now, she doesn't feel like she knows Zandik well enough to interrogate him.
"Uh, you know, the... the administration's really cracking down on security here, because of these disappearances..."
There are three particular cases that come to mind, all of whom Alphys has seen recently: Crystal, a drama professor and wife of the comedian Snowseph Drake; Shyra, a music major with her sister, Shyren; and Muttler, a student of veterinary science. All three of them have gone missing.
"So, uh, if you've seen them, or know anything about them, I... I would really like to know," she says. "So that way, maybe, uh, maybe we have a clue of what... what happened to them? You know?"

Nurse Alphys is checking the supplies in the infirmary, partly out of routine, and partly out of nerves. When she finds less bandages in the supply closet than there should be, she turns to confront her co-worker, inasmuch as Alphys is confrontational.
"Hey, uh, Z... Zandik? You wouldn't know what happened to the, ah... ex-extra bandages and things, w-would you?"
"Be-because, ah, we have to make sure we... p-put in a request if we're, um, running low..."

"Uh?"
A dull-eyed stare; Uzi's been playing Balatro on the clock again. It's easy to slack when no one can see what's on your HUD. She blinks a few times, finally remembering what she's supposed to be doing.
"Oh, yeah. I do maintenance stuff, mostly. Behind the scenes work. Engineering. Y'know, tech work. Don't like to brag, but I'm super good at it," she brags. "But yeah, Tenna's like..."
What's the most eloquent way to phrase this? Something that really encapsulates her relationship with her TV-headed boss?
"...My gay uncle."
Perfect. But while Uzi gives herself a mental pat on the back for her way with words, she can't help but shake the nagging feeling of familiarity that comes with this big lizard.
"Have we met before?" she says, raising a brow. "Like, you think I'd remember if we met. I mean, it's not like you're some background character or anything, right? Am I wrong?"
Alphys gets the impression that the robot might've been zoning out, but it's not like Alphys has room to judge. How often does she do that herself?
"But yeah, Tenna's like... my gay uncle."
"Um, I'm sorry, he's, um... He's like your what?"
The probability of Alphys writing fanfiction about her boss (again) just went up a thousandfold. She just needs to find the right partner for him...
Stop getting distracted, Alphys! Pay attention at work!
"... Oh, yeah! We, uh, met briefly, I think. That's pretty cool about your, uh, engineering and things... And if I were a background character, then I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't g-give me lines."
Good one, Alphys. Great line.
"Um. And I have a name, too," she adds. "I'm Alphys! I, uh... What's yours?"
There's a beat.
"Oh! And I manage social media here! Which is basically, just, uh... sending emails and things."

"matter of speaking, yes."
A greedy digimon that knew where the shining gems were, where everything was perfect and he dug and dug himself to safety. Every moment spent finding the safety of other pain.
"Well, I certainly don't have anything kind to say there. A war between two nations with history unknown, if I was a historian I would have been more interested. But I focus on the future instead."
"Do you hate humans, for doing such a thing?"
"N... No. I don't hate humans. If anything, I'm grateful to have met the human who fell down. Because of that human, I became a better person..."
"And without humanity, we wouldn't have anime!" That's the really important part!
"But no, ah, seriously. I know my life would've been very different if I had grown up on the surface. But at least we're there now, and maybe future generations won't end up repeating the past?"
(She can hope...)
@lablizard
"I won."
He may be badly bruised, but heΒ wonΒ the fight in Skullrender, and he's proud. He doesn't like going to Monkey King for help in tending to these bruises, so he's on his own, outside, tending them himself. NOT very well.
"Ohβ Oh my god! Are you okay?!"
Alphys has seen some pretty rough sights whenever she passes by Skullrender on the way back from work, but she's never had to deal with them herself. After the initial shock passes, her medical training kicks in.
"Youβ You need to get some ice on those bruises as soon as you can! Let me just, ah, see what I have..."
She rummages through her Mew Mew themed ita bag, then offers the man some cold compresses, the kind that are only good for one use. They're not as effective as ice packs from a freezer, but they'll do in a pinch.
"He could, but lets say there is a ...symbiosis to our relationship. He is born from me, and so if he goes too far he might die."
"he's a monster born from a human soul. Isn't that something!" Of course without the lack of digital monsters around, its the simpliest explanation he could give because he's not ready to give out the secrets of e pulse just yet.
"Oh. That...did you like it, or was it a forced thing?"
A monster born from a human soul. Between that and their symbiotic relationship, this is sounding less like a monster movie and more like something else entirely.
"W-whoa! That's, uh, that's really something! I've never heard of anything like that before."
"Was he, um, born from your soul?" she asks, then realizes that might be a sensitive subject. "But if not, um, I mean, you don't have to tell me if that's... if that's too personal to ask, or anything."
She stands there in awkward silence for a moment. When Arslen asks about her past, Alphys looks down at the ground, where another monster is said to be lying in wait.
"... Um. No, it was, um. It was forced. In my world, a very... very long time ago, humans and monsters were at war with each other, and monsterkind... lost. So they sent us all there."
"We couldn't, uh, exactly dig our way out, either. A magical barrier kept us trapped underground, and it wasn't until a human came along, years later, that things were set into motion and we were eventually freed."
β "I didn't." The slightest bit of skepticism was enough for Sandrone to reaffirm what she had said defensively. "And hah! Toys? I build things far more impressive than toys." She turned to show the giant key spinning in her back, to indicate that she was a puppet herself.
"I can build mekanized individuals even more convincingly "human" than myself. Not to mention a plethora of dangerous robotic weapons. As a genius, I wouldn't settle for something as mundane as toy repair."
First there was the deredere, now here comes the tsuntsun...
Actually, it's kind of cringe to use those terms in this situation.
Alphys notices the turnkey on the woman's back. She had passed it off as elaborate cosplay at first, but now she's not too sure, given what she just told her.
"Oh, uh... s-sorry, I didn't know that I was talking to, uh, a genius here," she says.
"... Um. Do you really think there need to be more weapons in this world? And wasn't that, uh, toy repair that you were doing right there?"
"Oh no, you misunderstand. When I say underground, I mean underground." he taps his foot on the ground beneath them, as if he was about to summon something.
"He's quiet too big to be seen above ground, you see."
"If he comes up, this entire area would get destroyed. So its better if he hibernates for now under. Until we can find him a good place to rest."
The way Klay describes his "big turtle friend," he sounds less like the monsters of the underground, and more like one of those giant city-destroying monsters that she's seen in human movies.
"Oh, uh... y-yeah, in that case, Iβ I guess it's safer if he's not above ground? M-maybe he could dig to, uh, outside the city, like to the outskirts, then β or you could let him rest. Heheh..."
She definitely doesn't want to be responsible for the destruction of a city block! Swallowing a lump down her throat, Alphys decides to change the topic.
"Um, y-you know, um, monsters like me, we had to live underground for a long, long time... but it wasn't like, uh, right under a city. There was a mountain, and... the city was a few miles from there?"

"That's the spirit! I do understand not wanting to bother others; it's so much simpler to be the one to help others than to be the one who needs help. Most don't want to burden others with their problems." She had seen this mindset at work among many people, and deep down it's one she held herself. Most tended to think that she had no problems in the world, but the truth was, Burnice simply didn't let others know nor let them get in the way of what she wants to do. They were few and far between, but they were still present.
At the mention of robots, Burnice's eyes lit up.
"You have Intelligent Constructs too? The only one I know of is Billy, who's a good friend of mine!" She paused for a moment. "I haven't watched much, if any T.V since arriving, but I'll be sure to keep an eye out for him!"
"Y-yeah, that's true. And I know it's not healthy to keep your feelings bottled up, but there really isn't anything we can do. And at least we have each other, right?"
Alphys sighs. She knows that if Undyne were here, she wouldn't stop fighting until they found a way out. And she knows that Mettaton must miss his cousin Blooky, too.
When the bartender brings up a new turn of phrase, Alphys blinks a few times.
"Um, I haven't heard of the phrase 'intelligent constructs' before, but I guess he's like one of those? I β I did construct him, or his body, at least. But what's, um..." She taps her claws against her glass. "What's Billy like?"
β "What? Don't give me that look." Sandrone had done a good thing on paper. A child's wind-up doll had been broken and she was crying, so the Harbinger had fixed it and sent the girl on her way. Unfortunately, there had been a witness.
"I don't care if the girl was happy or not. The crying was annoying, and I can't stand looking at broken toys. That's all." Liar.
This is, what experts in the anime business like herself, would call tsundere behavior. Alphys smiles. If this woman hadn't stepped in herself, it's possible that Alphys would've done the same.
"Y-yeah, I'm, uh, sure you didn't," she says with a smile that implies that she did.
"Y... You were really good at fixing that! Have you thought about going into t... toy repair?"
