You are not what happened to you. You are not your intrusive thoughts. You are not the opinion of others. You are your own individual, live your life accordingly. There is no shame in accepting life as it is and to pursue your own happiness despite of what others think of you. Chasing your own happiness and your comfort doesn't make you selfish.
