if youre getting queerbaited by marvel thats on you
I don’t think so. I mean, yes, you can be old and cynical like me - someone who never expects to see a canon same sex relationship in Marvel in the first place, and not be disappointed. But my lack of expectations comes from growing up in a world where being gay was illegal. Nowadays we have gay marriage and beloved queer celebrities and massive Pride parades… and it just seems to me like the kids SHOULD have higher expectations, and those higher expectations should be met. It’s 2021, not 1990. By now, if you’re getting queerbaited by marvel, that’s on marvel
Op’s blistering hot take: when companies capitalize on a vulnerable population’s desperation for representation while doing materially nothing to actually represent them, that’s the stupid oppressed people’s fault for falling for it. Let’s point and laugh at those people instead of looking critically at how and why media creators do this.
i agree with galadhir that we SHOULD expect better from our media, because with each passing year more and more examples of queer media are published successfully and it’s proven to be lucrative to cater to the queer community, but i think what op was saying is that Marvel—particularly the MCU, which is ofc owned by Disney, a notoriously homophobic company—has been queerbaiting for a good decade or so now, and every time we fall for it and rush to pay for another bland superhero movie in the hopes that this time it’ll be different, we’re proving to Disney that queerbaiting works and that’s all they have to do. The MCU is an abusive ex and queer viewers keep getting our hopes up that this time they’ve really changed, but they have given us nothing over and over and our optimism and willingness to assume the best is funding more queerbaiting. Anyway, if you’re still curious about whatever Disney is doing with the MCU, pirate that shit instead.
Moral of the story: not feeding the monopoly beast, only pirate anything and everything Disney owned = free therapy.
