Has to be Jameson and Toby - I’ve been WAITING for this duo btw
Is it crazy that I kinda feel bad for Emily Laughlin
This is my general critical reading of what's going on:
The current plotline feels increasingly messy and structurally unfocused. At this point it doesn't read like a coherent narrative progression so much as a shift toward character centered fixation rather than consistent storytelling. The addition of a fourth POV (Grayson and Jameson) only intensifies that issue because it disrupts the narrative balance instead of strengthening it.
The core problem isn't simply personal preference, it's the way the identity of this trilogy keeps shifting. From a framing and marketing standpoint, this series was introduced as a spin-off, not as a direct continuation or second arc of the original books. That distinction matters, because spin-offs usually signal a narrative focus on new characters, new dynamics and a more independent story structure. The only original character consistently emphasized from the beginning was Grayson, which reinforced that expectation.
So the disappointment from readers is not random or exaggerated, it comes from a mismatch between expectation and execution. If this had been presented more like ''heroes of Olympus'', where readers were clearly told the original cast would remain central, then the continued focus on Avery and the Hawthornes would make structural sense, but that is not how the grandest game was initially framed.
Instead, what's happening now feels like a gradual re-centering of legacy characters at the expense of the new characters. That creates an imbalance because the new characters are not given enough space to fully establish themselves before the narrative pulls attention back to older dynamics. As a result the story starts to feel less like organic development and more like fan-driven focus or character prioritization over plot cohesion.
The fourth POV makes this more noticeable, because multiple POVs only work effectively when the narrative architecture is designed for it from the start. Otherwise, it risks diluting focus and creating an overcrowded structure where no single perspective feels fully grounded.
Overall, this is less about ''liking or disliking'' a direction and more about narrative consistency, structural clarity and whether the story is maintaining the identity it originally established.
And with all due respect, I do find myself disappointed with the direction this is taking and I think that reaction is valid. The issue here isn't about simply liking or disliking certain choices but about how the narrative is being structured and whether it stays consistent with the identity it originally established. And no, you don't need to be an author or a professional writer to notice that. Reading itself builds that kind of understanding over time, you start recognizing when a story is coherent in its focus and when it begins to shift away from what it initially set up. I've read enough books to be able to tell when something feels off in its narrative balance, pacing or overall direction. So there's no need to dismiss this as me being dramatic or a ''hater'', it's a reading-based critique of structure and consistency, not an emotional overreaction.
TGG Hot Take?
I think one of the reasons why TGG trilogy is one big mess is because there’s literally no central plot and it’s all a bunch of random subplots, somewhat forced romances (taking a risk here…), and too many twists and turns. TIG was complex but was still central to Avery and explored her role in the Hawthorne’s world, whereas I think TGG is focused on too many characters and (at least for me) doesn’t let you connect with them deeply. I also don’t like how it’s linked back to Avery with her being kidnapped at the end of Glorious Rivals when JLB said this series wouldn’t be revolving around Avery and the Hawthornes (besides Grayson) anymore. I feel like it’s kinda giving stranger things where everyone’s just left with more questions than answers, and leaves readers more confused on what the actual storyline is. Obviously this is just my opinion but I don’t know I just find the structure kinda… unappealing?? The multiple POVs make it feel as though JLB is trying to explore as many characters / stories as she can when actually I think it should’ve been narrowed. Like yes these side characters are exciting and interesting but you can only explore so many before it just starts to lack depth. While I don’t support hate on Lyra, Savannah etc, I do think we’d have a better understanding of these characters if the focus was more deeply on them, or maybe only focused on one character’s journey in the game. And tying into this, I wish the romances weren’t so “perfectly” paired, with each character HAVING to have a romantic partner - I feel like it might also mess up the storyline as it’s easy for the romances to lack depth and seem rushed/forced. For example, I love the idea of Grayson and Lyra but I’d love it more if they met under different circumstances. Personally though I think the most interesting character in this whole series is Rohan - he has an interesting reason for wanting to win and I like how he’s able to control other characters and kinda acts as a “puppet master” at times. Anyway rant over!!

Guys I’m gonna be honest I’m so lost with what’s going on in TGG series I don’t think I’ve ever been more confused in my life..l it may be due to exams I’m forgetting everything but I swear I’m gonna end up having to reread the whole series again with how complex this is all getting 😭😭

YESSSSSSS MY GIRL MAX MAKES A BEAUTIFUL RETURN!!!!
Guys… I might get hate for this, but it’s a completely genuine question… why is the fandom so obsessed with Alisa x Nash? I mean don’t get me wrong I love both characters, however I never really thought about them together? I remember it being mentioned that they were engaged but after that I gotta say I completely forgot about it. Cause we never actually see them *together* since it was in the past, and in the first book Nash is interested in Libby straight away. Idk, no hate or anything but genuinely a bit confused lol

Not to be the black sheep but I really wished Grayson had met Lyra in college in a very unromantic way - bump/fell on each other & Lyra dragged him for not watching where he's going/being uptight/how she could never see him be with anyone and then they get roped into solving a mystery at the same college where they sneak past curfews and meet with flashlights in the forest behind campus and Grayson's in a suit and Lyra's in pjs and he's genuinely falling for her but they're fighting throughout & at the end it turns out Tobias was funding the college to give him information on his competitors, the funding was then being used for non ethical activities and they solve the mystery together and Lyra ends up getting with Grayson & he reminds her she said he'd never end up with anyone & she jokes about leaving & we get a full on proposal by my professional yearner
finding out jameson hawthorne is half british is probably THE highlight of my year so far
