I decided to reread Dungeon Meshi
(after finishing what's been released so far of the excellent ChiLaios fanfic "What Keeps You Here" by @avoidcrow and @every-captain)
(thoroughly recommend it),
and have decided to post some of my favorite underrated moments from this truly genius manga as I progress along.
After everything they've been through--after everything Laios himself has personally been through himself because of Thistle (the confusion and fear for Fallin being transformed into a chimera, the terror of having a whole crowd of dragons set on him, the betrayal of Thistle seemingly turning on him after they sat down together and talked, the horrorifying prospect of being trapped and forcefed by a plant forever)--Laios could certainly be forgiven for harboring some ill will towards Thistle. And yet ...
Instead of killing the now comatose-ish Thistle, they make sure he's comfortable, Laios speaks kindly to him, and fully intends to carry him back up to the surface (one his own gosh-darn back, if need be). Laios is just a sweet dude. Not one malicious bone in his body.
Laios is a really good person. Honestly I got really disappointed with the lack of relevance of Thistle after in the story, I mean, I expected a personality develop against winged lion similar as Mithrun’s.
Thistle did develop a desire regarding the winged lion right after being consumed! It's "In my place, someone, anyone, stop that thing!" right before he reaches for marcille's hand and revives her.
I interpreted it as that thistle at his core is someone who likely thinks of others more than himself, so he would want the winged lion to be stopped by any means necessary. OR it could be a hatred/paranoia thing directly about the lion. On the flipside, mithrun at his core is more of a vain person, so the desire that formed after being consumed was more related to himself ("Why didn't you consume ALL of me?")
This desire in thistle is also satisfied at the end when he wakes up while the citizens of merini are cheering for their new king, laios, which means that the winged lion has been effectively stopped and the citizens have been saved/freed.
But get this, it could be a double-whammy of two new desires!
Since before thinking about anyone stopping the winged lion, thistle also desires to see someone's face for the last time ("I want to see his face one more time..!" "Wait.. Whose face..?"), which can be interpreted in multiple ways. He likely meant delgal, but has already forgotten who that is in those panels after being consumed.
1. His desire was about seeing delgal, but not remembering his name or who exactly he is anymore since having your desires consumed seems to cause memory loss. This desire would then be satisfied when he wakes and sees yaad in delgal's body at the end. Though, thistle does say delgal's name then, so perhaps he forgot temporarily due to the stress of the moment and then remembers upon seeing his face?
2. His desire is to see the face of literally anyone. Since we see the dinner table disappear into shadow in that panel, it could be interpreted as thistle wanting someone to look at him with importance/warmth because thistle does think of being together at a dinner table as something important and/or fond and warm. Like he even snidely derides marcille for it due to her being a half-elf: "in a hundred years, no one will be at the dinner table with you!". And that desire is satisfied when yaad acknowledges and apologizes to him at the end as delgal, recognizing how important thistle has been to delgal.
I personally go with the first interpretation since it does make sense more to me given everything, and feels more straightforward. But the second one is quite the tear-jerker!
The depressing part is that with these interpretations, i find it likely that thistle passes away + it makes more sense for thematic and story reasons + there's no author's post canon content with thistle :(
Buuut because it can be seen as an ambigious end and we are free-thinkers, i choose that thistle survives and goes onto whatever path one would like him to have!
