The cover of Sonic Youth’s 1990 seminal album Goo is a drawing by Raymond Pettibon, based on a photograph of Maureen Hindley, sister of Moors Murderer Myra Hindley, and her boyfriend David Smith, en route to the trial of Myra Hindley & Ian Brady. Smith witnessed the 1964 murder of 17 year old Edward Evans, who would be the couple’s final murder victim. Smith called the police following this murder, prompting the arrest of the Ian Brady. Smith later served as the chief prosecution witness in the infamous trial of Brady & Hindley.
The iconic drawing has been reproduced and recreated countless times since Goo and remains one of the most recognizable album covers of the past 28 years.
