I got a 90 on my first mid term. Woohoo! Part of me is sad that this is my last semester. I'm really going to miss the feeling of acing a test or assignment... The other part of me will be happy to have my free time back...
Poem dictated by my 7 year old daughter

I thought this would make a cute thank you card
It's so hard to come up with good content every day. I find a lot of my story ideas need time to mature. I like writing every day, but knowing I have to create something postable every day leaves me rushing with some work. I end up posting something I think could have been much better if I had more time to pick at it. The Boy of my Own story was one I started in high school. At the time I was reading lots of Stephen King, which made me want to experiment with darkness in writing. The original was shorter and less descriptive, but my english teacher liked it none the less. In the first version, the boy was shot, but I felt that was too impersonal. I added her attempts to reach out to the boy to give her some relatable qualities and add some depth. The comment I had received about a twist ending that it could be a dog and not a boy made me want to write an ending like that. Like one of those books I used to love reading as a child where you changed what ending the story had by choosing different pages. I'm thinking of giving the reader a choice. Something like, if you don't like dark and disturbing stories, click here for the happy ending, and the ending would be that it was a puppy.
This was the original story as I wrote it in high school.
Boy of my Own
He was a small, thin boy who was only six years old. He looked so fragile and light, as if the wind could carry him off like the fluff from a dandelion. His sandy blonde hair was getting long and matted with dirt. I found him alone, sleeping in a box, in a cold and dimly lit alley. That is why I felt the need to take him home.
I wanted to take care of him like he was my own. I had such a vision of my very own precious little boy. Oh the fun I imagined us having. Everything would have been fine if he had been good and did what he was told. I wouldn’t have locked him in the cellar if he hadn’t tried to get away. It wasn’t my fault he was down there, he made it necessary.
He lived in the cellar for two and a half years – never allowed one step in the sun after that day he almost got away. I let him play in the back yard, but he just had to climb the fence. Luckily my neighbor’s vicious dog sent him scrambling back where I could catch him. Like I said, he simply wouldn’t listen. It wasn’t my fault.
I made sure he had toys, but he sat down there all day staring at a picture of a rabbit. I gave him fresh water and food twice a day. At first he ate it all, but as time went by, he barely touched it. He was such a wasteful and ungrateful child, typical of children today. Maybe if I had gotten to him sooner, there would have been hope for him.
His wasteful, despondent demeanor was putting me in a bad place. I began to hear voices. They started quietly, sounding like a conversation happening in another room. I would wander the house trying to hear what they were saying, but it seemed they were always a few paces out of my hearing range. When the message finally became clear, I didn’t like what they had to say.
They hissed a single phrase at me like a chorus of serpents. “Kill the boy.” I argued and pleaded with them.  I begged for a chance to turn things around. They said the boy would only be good when he’s dead.  I couldn’t accept that answer so I began working with the boy. I spent hours sitting with him and talking to him but got no response. I tried being goofy, silly, telling jokes, anything to try to get through to him with no luck. The voices continued to hiss their command. I thought maybe if I cleaned him up a bit the voices could see he was worth sparing. That went horribly wrong.
I drew a nice warm bath and went down to the cellar to fetch the boy. He put up quite a fuss when I picked him up, making the first sounds I had heard from him since I put him down there. His weakness made his resistance pathetic and I was easily able to carry him to the bathroom. I let him tire himself out, waiting for what seemed like forever for him to be still. I lathered up the sponge and began washing him, thinking he was no threat. That was the fatal error.
He was still while I washed his chest and arms, but when I brought the sponge up to his face, he bit down hard on my hand. As I screamed in pain, trying to pull my hand from his mouth, I saw he grabbed the shaving razor I forgot to put away. He slashed at my face with the razor, making contact with my cheek. I saw blood dripping into the tub, turning into red clouds when it met the water.
The voices filled my head, enraged and fueled by the pain. I couldn’t take any more, so instead of trying to free my hand, I pushed it hard into his mouth. I pushed him under the water and held him there until he was limp and motionless.
I drained the bath and tended to my wounds. The gash on my cheek was going to leave a nasty scar. I filled the tub back up and cleaned the boy properly, dried his hair and gave him a much needed haircut. I put him in pajamas and tucked him in bed. He even let me read him a bed time story.Â
I hated to admit it, but the voices were right. He was a good boy. We had a great time together until there came a knock at the door one day…
She was always fortunate in life, or so it appeared from the outside looking in. She had been dealt a good hand with beauty, brains and personality. She was pretty, tall and slender, with fair skin, long golden ringlets and piercing blue eyes. She had a smile that could melt the toughest heart. She was also set financially. She came from a family that had worked hard and invested well. She wasn't filthy rich, but had enough to have nice things without working too hard, which made some envious. Nobody knew that she was blessed in those aspects so she would be free to perform the tasks she was created for. She was a guardian angel, brought forth to help heal the wounds left by this world. She was born into this world with the first task of saving her mother, who had a difficult life and was ready to give up. Becoming the vessel for a guardian angel gave her mother purpose and new found strength. Angelica was born and unknowingly began work right away. Both sets of her grandparents had also been worn down by the trials of life. Her birth brought joy and renewed faith as they watched her joyously experience all of life's firsts. To be continued

"It doesn't matter what I say So long as I sing with inflection That makes you feel I'll convey Some inner truth or vast reflection" Hook - Blues Traveler This line couldn't be truer. I've come to see that it's not so much about what you say that matters, but how you say it. I think that's what's so interesting about this class. Because we can't control the way we say it, we are paying attention to how we write, and what power those words have on emotions.
I know there are a lot of things that make a house a home. My dogs are my favorite part of coming home. I have two boxers and a english bulldog, so I could really relate to the silence being suspicious.
I go out on my deck and what do I see? Some of my flowers are smiling at me! Are they smiling to say I've done everything right? They'll never tell, their lips are sealed tight. I suppose I'll just sit and stare in delight.
Strategy
A coworker started a pool yesterday because there were four sports games happening and he thought it would be a good time for an office bet. He made up sheets with the teams, and you had to pick which you thought would win for an entry of $10. I don't follow sports at all. In fact, I couldn't even tell you what sports some of the teams listed were for, so I declined making a wager at first. The pool was the talk of the office for the whole day, as they debated why they thought their picks would win. When I heard one of the guys razzing another for never winning a bet, I remembered something that made me jump to action. The guy being picked on used to own a successful bar, which he lost because of bad gambling debt. When I was first told the story of how he lost his bar, they mentioned that he was so bad, you could make a fortune if you watched what he bet and made the exact opposite choices. Remembering that little tid bit, I asked him who he bet on, and selected the opposite teams. It was announced at the beginning that the winner would have to bring in doughnuts for the office, so they would be notified via text in the morning. I was very surprised and delighted to receive a text saying all four of my picks won, bring the doughnuts! My poor coworker was picked on for a good portion of the day because of my strategy. The guys were in disbelief because their picks were based on knowledge of the teams and I won knowing nothing about them. The pool came to $120, but I gave $10 to the coworker who was the basis for my bet, because without him I wouldn't have won.
I'm drowning in a sea of tissues Swimming in sinus misery All because a little germ Found it's way inside of me My brain isn't working very well with this cold. All non essential functions (such as complex thinking) have been shut down while repairs begin. Those with stock in Kleenex may see an early jump in share prices as I blow my nose at least twice a minute. I'd like to say thank you to the makers of NyQuil, who have given me my only tissue free moments so far this week.

My first joy ride
I remember the day I got my license vividly. The test went great. It was the first and only time I have parallel parked perfectly on the first try and I passed with flying colors. My parents allowed me to have the car for the day, and gave the ok for me to pick up my two best friends. We went out to visit a boy, who lived out in the middle of nowhere. We had a good time there, but we had to leave to get my friend Amy home by 3. Several miles into our trip home, I approached a knoll where the road curved sharply. As I came up and out of the bend, there was a deer smack dab in the middle of the road. I swerved into the right shoulder to avoid the doe and she began to dance about, but not leave the road. I accelerated to get away from her, but my rear right tire was still in the gravel, which sent the car into a spin. The tires locked. The steering wheel was limp, useless and the brakes did nothing. I remember looking out of the passenger side window and watched as we slid up a large, steep embankment and hit, of all things, a deer crossing sign, which sent the car into a roll. It finally came to rest upside down in the middle of the road. I remember dangling from the ceiling, held in place by the seatbelt, looking at the double yellow lines through the shattered windshield. I stared for a few moments until I saw steam, and quickly undid my belt. I came falling down onto the steering column and realized my left foot was stuck. I pulled with all my might, and my foot came free, leaving my shoe behind. I managed to crawl out the side window and saw my friends had already made it out. I was in shock. The car was still on and playing music, so I reached in and turned it off. It landed taking up both lanes, so I grabbed the bumper and spun it out of the way. I don't remember it being heavy. After doing that, I began to walk, oblivious to my one shoe missing, in the direction we came from. My friends stopped me because there was a farm house visible ahead. As we walked towards it, a van approached, and amazingly enough, it was the people that lived at the farm house, on their way home. They gave us a lift to the house and called 911. When the cops arrived, they asked for my license and registration, and I meekly handed over the paper stating I passed my driving test just a few hours ago. The cop shook his head an said maybe you shouldn't have passed. To this day, I'm not sure in a split second I would react any differently. I wasn't speeding or driving recklessly, it was just a freak thing that could have happened to a driver of any age. We all got a clean bill of health, just a few cuts and bruises. My poor friends weren't allowed to ride with teenage drivers anymore, and I was scared to drive for a while. Now I dread the day my daughter gets her license.
Look out below!
Have you ever been standing close to an edge with no railing to stop you from falling to the depths below, and feel that wobble, or that pull on your equilibrium, so you step back from the ledge? Well, I got to see the reason for that sensation today. We’re having a deck built off the second floor of our house, so it’s 14 feet in the air. It’s not quite completed, but all that’s missing are the steps and the rails. While my husband and I were out inspecting the new work, my husband began to walk close to the edge of the deck. I saw what I could only describe as a gremlin or a troll, no bigger than one foot tall, toss a thin silken rope around my husbands leg. Another one appeared and threw a rope around his torso. They begin to hang from the ropes, pulling with all their might. They seemed to come from nowhere, all throwing ropes and pulling. Eventually after twenty or thirty of them had their ropes around him, he wobbled forward towards the edge. I stood speechless as the trolls bound him in their web, fearful they would come for me. My husband grabbed a beam for support, and made his way back from the edge. The ropes began to break, and the trolls attached disappeared from sight, screaming in defeat as he reached safety.
