Kwixer for iPhone and Windows Phone Delivers Entertainment Recommendations All in One App & Website

Also, an exclusive in-app upgrade delivers up-to-date personalized entertainment news. Kwixer is also fully bilingual, offering users simultaneous search in both English and French.

More than just a social recommendation engine, Kwixer recognizes that friends don’t always have same taste. Kwixer uses your entertainment preferences and shared interests with friends to provide the best possible suggestions. The more you Kwix, the better your recommendations become. Intelligently designed, Kwixer is also self-learning to find new patterns of interest from actors and authors to genres and themes. For example, if a user likes multiple science fiction movies set in the future, then Kwixer will recommend other movies, but also books and games with that same theme.

Kwixer is the creation of two young developers, Rodrigue Haijar and Jeremy Pekmez. After meeting in university and working together as developers, they joined forces to participate in the Imagine Cup and Pitch You App competitions. One day at the office, after listening to co-workers chat about what movies to watch and what songs to listen to, they had an idea to change the way we experience entertainment recommendations. They also noticed that people would recommend entertainment on Facebook and Twitter, but the information would appear on your feed and then disappear forever— it wasn’t being used to its full potential. There were multiple apps for music, books, music, games or restaurants, but none that consolidated all entertainment information and social network reviews. Why use five apps, when you just need one? French version of the post. The team?

Right now we’re two developers and therefore two co-founders working on Kwixer. We met at university and worked at the same company as part-time developers while studying. We participated in a few competitions like the Imagine Cup and Pitch Your App! Jeremy, the one writing this article in french; works mainly on the server side of Kwixer. He also handles all the administrative and accounting tasks. An artist by heart Jeremy enjoys playing the piano and relaxing under the sun.

Rodrigue; I mainly handle the client apps, talk about Kwixer here & there and if you try to get in touch with us you’ll certainly get a reply from me. I really enjoy music; it only takes a couple of seconds listening to a good song to change my mood, I love playing squash and enjoy almost every sport!

You can find us working at "Les Satellites" it is the one and only best coworking space in Nice. Nicolas the person that manages the place has helped us in a lot of aspects of Kwixer. If you live in Nice, France and don't know about "Les Satellites" then you're definitely doing something wrong!

We’ve also had some help from people close to us and we really thank them:

What problem did we want to solve? 

It all started on a random day in July 2011 when a light bulb turned on above our heads (yes it did…) when we noticed:  

We always had talks around the office about what movies to watch, books to read and songs to listen to! 

People would always share on Facebook/ Twitter what they just watched/read with their thoughts, then a comment or reply would quickly follow up that sounds like: “OMG! I watched it 2! It was good but didn’t like the ending!”.  After a while that information is lost in the activity feed, never to be seen again. 

We started looking for apps that would simplify all that and we couldn’t find any that did: Movies, books, music, video games and restaurants at the same time (These were the topics that were mostly discussed during those office coffee breaks!)

We did find some nice apps that did only movies and series or only restaurants; unless we were going to install an app for every kind of media or cultural taste we wanted to share and then invite our friends on each one of them; and most didn’t do any recommendations. We thought this wasn’t for us! So like every developer when you don’t find what you’re looking for you build it. We started working on Kwixer at nights and during weekends, after work and courses around September 2011.

What Kwixer does?

Kwixer enables you to share and rate (a.k.a “Kwix”) in a very simple and intelligent way what you’ve watched, read, heard, played or where you ate at.

Kwixer is also an intelligent social recommendation engine; the more you kwix the better the suggestions you’ll get. Example: You’ve kwixed Skyfall the latest James Bond movie and really loved it, Kwixer will suggest you other action films that:

You haven’t watched yet

Have been kwixed by your friends who have also kwixed Skyfall and loved it.

Are related to the movie; like the song Skyfall by Adele which is the theme song in the movie

Kwixer comes with all the standard features you’d expect from an app these days: a to do list, social integration with Twitter and Facebook.

And you know how you often see a movie shared, and would end up looking for the trailer on youtube, then look for the dvd on amazon/itunes? Or even look for the theater timings on a different site? We want to consolidate all this information, and not just for movies! Books, music, video games, and restaurants!  

Where are we now?

When we started working on the project we had zero direct competitors.  Today we have a couple! (Nothing better than competitors to force you to do more!) So we’re working harder with faster iterations.

We’ve just published both our iOS and windows phone apps.

We’ll start development on android and a full complete website soon;

We’ll actively start looking for funding around February; the funding will be used to grow the development team.

  Why the name “Kwixer”?

We were looking for a name that:

Sounds cool

That enabled us to have some kind of verb, like how users adopted the “google” verb, or the “tweet” verb

That had an available domain name

Jeremy’s girlfriend added up the best scored letters in Scrabble and came up with something sounding like “Kwyxz” so we simplified that to “Kwixer”, loved it, and prayed for the availability of the domain name!

  Our vision?

Our vision is simple:

Make Kwixer the entry point for when you want to share/search for cultural things.

Keep adding value to our resources (movies, books etc...).

Listen to your feedback.

Le lancement de Kwixer étant très proche, il est temps pour nous de se présenter et de vous raconter rapidement comment est né le projet.

L’équipe Kwixer

Nous sommes deux co-fondateurs et développeurs tout juste sortis de l’école :

Rod, l’auteur du post en anglais, s’occupe principalement des applications clientes et de la communication. Si vous souhaitez nous contacter, il sera très certainement votre interlocuteur ;)

Jérémy , auteur de ce post et très certainement des futurs posts en français, je suis principalement en charge de la partie serveur de Kwixer et des tâches administratives.

Après avoir travaillé ensemble en contrat pro dans la même boîte,  nous avons décidé de nous lancer un nouveau challenge : monter notre boîte et en France s’il vous plaît!

Il est vrai qu’avant de nous lancer dans cette aventure nous avions participé à quelques concours comme l’Imagine Cup et Pitch Your App, et ces expériences nous ont permis d’appréhender un petit peu différemment la création de notre projet.

Pourquoi Kwixer ?

Malgré tout, il nous manquait quelque chose : une grande idée pour nourrir nos ambitions. Et en juillet 2011, pendant une pause-café, tout est devenu évident !

Dans ces moments-là, on partage souvent nos dernières trouvailles ! Un livre surprenant, le nouvel album de votre artiste préféré, une sortie au ciné à ne pas rater… Alors comment faire pour partager ça simplement sans se répéter ?

Facebook/Twitter pas vraiment efficaces pour ce genre de contenu. Difficile de retrouver l’information dans le temps, et ces plateformes ne permettent pas de mettre en avant une véritable critique.

Alors, le premier réflexe a été de penser que d’autres devaient sûrement proposer ce genre de service. Mais après quelques recherches, le constat était sans appel ! Il y a bien des réseaux sociaux pour les films, la musique… mais cela nécessite alors d’avoir de nombreuses applications et de créer une nouvelle communauté à chaque fois. Et je ne sais pas vous, mais il m’arrive régulièrement de chercher des musiques de films, alors pourquoi les séparer ! Enfin dernier point, aucune application n’était capable de faire des recommandations… Je suis absolument certain que je suis passé à côté de nombreux films que j’aurais adorés, si seulement, j’avais pu les identifier facilement… 

Après un tel constat, quoi de mieux que de se lancer un nouveau défi, nous avions enfin trouvé comment occuper nos soirs et weekends (au grand désespoir de celles qui partagent nos vies)

Que fait Kwixer ?

Kwixer va vous permettre de partager et de recommander facilement et intelligemment ce que vous avez regardé, lu, écouté, ce à quoi vous avez joué ou là ou vous êtes allés manger.

Pourquoi intelligent ? Tout simplement parce que l’application embarque un réseau social et un moteur de recommandation ! Plus vous kwixez, plus les suggestions seront pertinentes. Par exemple : J’ai vu récemment Skyfall le dernier James Bond et j’ai vraiment adoré ! Kwixer va donc me proposer d’autres films d’action :

Qui ont été partagés par mes amis qui ont aussi aimé Skyfall

D’autres ressources en rapport avec le film, comme le thème musical Skyfall de Adèle

Kwixer fournit également toutes les fonctionnalités que l’on attend aujourd’hui sur une application mobile, une liste de tâches et l’intégration de Facebook/Twitter. Enfin parce que de nombreux sites de qualité référencent du contenu sur ce genre de ressources, quoi de mieux que de trouver une bande annonce de film sur YouTube, ou des infos sur Wikipédia !

Où en sommes-nous?

L’application iOS est disponible sur l’AppStore et notre application Windows phone sur le Marketplace. Bien sûr, nous n’oublions pas les utilisateurs d’Android et les adeptes du web, tout sera mis en œuvre pour que Kwixer soit accessible à tous et partout, mais pour cela il va nous falloir agrandir l’équipe !

D’où vient le nom « Kwixer » ? 

C’est vrai qu’on nous demande souvent pourquoi nous avons choisi ce nom :

Premièrement ça sonne bien 

Il se décline facilement comme un verbe

Le nom de domaine était disponible, c’est souvent la condition la plus difficile à remplir !

Mais il faut bien reconnaître que seul un esprit étrange pouvait tomber sur ce nom, et en tant qu’adepte du Scrabble, ma moitié nous a grandement aidé avec ce mot redoutable «Kwyxz » que nous avons finalement simplifié en « Kwixer »
