Holidays were busy, but I'm back! New Year, New Hack. Not a lot of fun stuff to update because I'm doing my least favourite thing: changing all the voice files to match the new dialogue.

The ~*Process*~
I tend to write the dialogue and get that working first, and then afterwards, go through and change all the voice prompts. But I haven't found any documentation out there on which files correspond to what voice line, so I've also been listening to each sound file and making a list for myself. I'll probably share that once I'm finished with it.
Corrin
Some characters (royals) have a lot of versatile lines, so they're pretty easy to find matching clips for. Others are a bit harder - Corrin in particular can be tricky. They were written as a fairly passive character to begin with, so it can be hard to find appropriate reactions if I have them acting more aggressively. I've been using a lot of the attack/damage grunts to cover that.
Corrin has a lot of lines for events in the original story, so they've got a lot of specific, situational lines. They have no My Room lines though, which takes out a huge cache of non-specific reactions like "hmm", laughter, "uh-huh", etc.
There's also the fact that there are 6 different voice actors for Corrin, and a ton of varied reads - when F3 says "I'm so sorry," she sounds more casual, like she's stepped on someone's foot. When F1 says "I'm so sorry," she sounds devastated, like she's just... killed a beloved sibling, perhaps? 😂
CORRIN
Any dialogue script that Corrin speaks in has both a male and female version, because of the way the game calls sound files. The text is usually the same between both, so it's mostly a matter of copying and pasting, then changing all of Corrin's sound files to match (and watching out for pronouns). In dialogue files without Corrin, there is a way to set the dialogue to call a different word depending on whether they're registered as male or female, so it really is mostly the sound files making things complicated. The chapter I'm working on today, "Hoshido", has around 60 different dialogue files, counting all the Corrin duplicates!
Anyway, better get back to it. If you made it through all of this, here's a side tidbit that I didn't notice until I started doing this hack:
Corrin, like a lot of the characters, doesn't actually have a properly sad face in their portrait set. Their "suffering" face is just their angry face with a different mouth.
Pro tip for texture editing: Photoshop isn't great for producing .tga files. It took me way too long to figure out that it was getting rid of the alpha channel on them and flattening all the transparent bits into white. There's apparently a way to force it to save the transparency involving masks, but a way easier approach is to just use Paint.net.
Er... At least I got to experience dark chrome Corrin for a while!
TL;DR: My ongoing feud with Adobe continues.
The core of Fates, to me, was the conflict between Hoshido and Nohr and what it truly meant to choose each side. Who was affected by the decision, what motivated each side, and what your decision really came down to. In the end, there were some areas I felt could use a bit more exploration, and some that maybe should not have had as big a focus as they did.

Motivation
Using aspects already touched on in the original, tweaked the reasons for both countries to be fighting this war
Nuance
Hoshido is still the defender and Nohr the aggressor, but the harsh divide between one nation being good and the other evil is softened significantly
It's no longer a question of why Nohr is attacking, so much as how did the previous generation fail the two nations?
Characters' attitudes toward the war are examined a bit more closely
Just a few of the core concepts I hope to get across. This hack will probably be limited to Birthright and Conquest only, as I think that a narrowed focus will allow for a tighter story!

I decided to try to make a hack of Fire Emblem Fates because I really love the game and what it tried to do, but there were a number of things that just didn't resonate with me and left me feeling kind of unfulfilled. Most of this hack will be to do with story, I don't intend on changing the gameplay too much.

Corrin
Personality overhaul
More competent, less naive
More forward and willing to argue
Relationships are a bit more meaningful and individual
Not completely infallible
Less fawning over them
Origin/role overhaul
No longer a prince/princess
Their actual role in the army is a little clearer (i.e. is Ryoma in charge or is Corrin?)
Physical changes
Isn't wearing the Nohr Prince/Princess armor by default (though I will add that back in as a class change for people who did like it). Female Corrins can enjoy having their crotch covered and all Corrins can have shoes in their default class!
Right now they're just wearing the default ally mercenary armor, but that will change
I have some fun other things planned, but this is just a basic overview!
