The theory is (I actually think this was confirmed in the Ultimania someone correct me if I'm wrong sjkhfffd) that Shuyin is actually the "real" Tidus. Sin had access to Dream Zanarkand as well as the real Zanarkand and would sometimes destroy it over an over again. The Fayth had to keep on refreshing D!Zanarkand every time Sin destroyed it and bring it back to how it was before the attack. (no one was aware of what happened or that Sin attacked and just continued on as normal) And over time some of the details of D!Zanarkand were forgotten and Shuyin was one of the people affected. So Shuyin slowly became Tidus because the Fayth had difficulty remembering how he originally was.
