follow up the previous post, something about twice the fun, which of course the part where the most fun is the front/ main section . on one hand, it was like walk in the park because the design was based on the language i fluent, which is same as my own studio . on another, it’s not actually easy to achieve ideally in terms of workmanship. What japanese design require is great attention & discipline on workmanship even though the material is cheap & simple, which this practice is hard to come by during all my years practicing in this field . some craftmans tend to took the common materials for granted, treating them with less passion & therefore providing workmanship less than mediocre, but charge at steep price when see detailings that were less familiar to them . there were 2 contractors i recommended to the client: the carpenter & metalworker, who had closely performed well on expectation, on thin ice . as i was saying, human factor is the greatest resistance… There came a challenge where the wall cladding panels seemingly equal but in fact they are not! I believed the client cried a little when ordering precut panels that were all in different dimensions because the framework was not precision welding, and the design did not allow much mistake . the project was considered small, but tedious due to its sequence of works. One small drop would cause relatively large ripple in a small pond. We had many drops, client had felt rabbits in stomach, but managed to endure.
