An Onryō (怨霊) is a vengeful spirit from Japanese folklore and literature. Yumeship Escapism Syndrome (YES) is a medically unrecognized disorder in which an individual develops an extreme psychological and emotional dependence on their fictional other (f/o). The person's life may gradually become centered around their f/o to the point that their emotional stability, daily routine, sense of identity, and/or ability to cope with stress become heavily tied to the relationship they have with their fictional other.
Beings with YES may consume excessive amounts of media related to their f/o, collect or hoard items that beings may be associated with them, dedicate large amounts of time creating content about them, and structure their online persona, interests, and daily activities around maintaining feelings of closeness to their f/o. They may also surround themselves with reminders of their f/o through artwork, merchandise, playlists, self-insert content, shrines, comfort objects, aesthetics, and/or other
This attachment serves as more than a hobby or interest; it functions as a refuge from emotional distress, loneliness, insecurity, trauma, dissatisfaction, or overwhelming life circumstances, or more
Common Symptoms:
Constant preoccupation with thoughts of their f/o.
Spending hours engaging with content of any kinda related to their f/o every day.
Hoarding digital or physical items connected to their f/o.
Excessive daydreaming, fantasizing, self-inserting, or imagining interactions with their f/o
Feeling emotionally incomplete, empty, or distressed when unable to engage with their f/o
Structuring social media accounts and online identities around their attachment
Seeking comfort from their f/o during nearly all forms of emotional distress.
Neglecting responsibilities, social relationships, sleep, hygiene, education, or work due to fixation on their f/o.
Experiencing a diminished interest in activities unrelated to their f/o.
Developing routines intended to maintain feelings of closeness to their f/o.
Feeling disconnected from reality when not immersed in content involving their f/o.
Fear of not doing enough to “prove their love” for their f/o
Finding interacting with communities about their f/o, or just accounts who post about said f/o hard due to the anxiety of maybe interacting with a double and feeling emotional about it
Experiences Often Associated With YES:
Intense loneliness or emotional isolation.
Strong hyperfixation tendencies.
Emotional instability.
Difficulty coping with rejection, loss, abandonment, or change.
Low self-esteem or poor self-image.
Anxiety surrounding their relationship with their f/o.
Fear of being forgotten, replaced, or invalidated.
Emotional dependence on their f/o as a source of happiness.
Difficulty imagining a fulfilling future that doesn't involve their attachment.
Some beings with YES may also experience emotional distress surrounding doubles (others who share the same f/o).
Reactions may include:
Jealousy
Anxiety
Possessiveness
Feelings of competition
Fear of replacement
Emotional pain when seeing others claim relationships with the same character
Obsessive comparison of their relationship to others (This can also be even if it’s not of the same character)
Intense sadness, as if being eaten alive
An individual with YES may see doubles as a threat, and so being exposed to a doubles may trigger emotional episodes, depressive symptoms, or heightened attachment behaviors. Beings may feel that their attachment to their f/o is the only thing keeping them emotionally stable. Their attachment may become their primary coping mechanism, identity, or source of comfort.
Not everyone who identifies with YES will relate to every experience listed here. The severity, causes, and ways it affects someone's life can vary greatly from person to person.
