i'm kind of discouraged. i want to run an rp and have some ideas, but have asked the community several times for what they'd like to see, what keeps them engaged, any ideas they may want to bounce around, anyone that will talk to me so i can run my ideas by, and i've gotten zero response. at this point, i don't even want to open anything, not only because i'm not getting the information i would need, but that i'm not feeling very inspired to give my time to this community that can't give even a tenth of what i'd put into admining back to me. it doesn't feel like anyone cares, and maybe i've just been rp'ing too long, which has led me to becoming bitter, but i don't know if i can sink my time and effort and emotion into keeping up with membership, ads, events, my own muse, etc. for a community that is just going to pay me dust.
i definitely understand the frustration behind wanting to see what the community wants and trying to create a place that people will actually be interested in so that it can have a fighting chance.
on the other hand, i think i understand the community’s lack of engagement. putting interest checks out there and trying to gather responses is definitely a good way to start, but it’s not much of a promise or guarantee that something will come to fruition. i also don’t think you should let the lack of engagement there reflect what opening your own roleplay might look like. i think i’ve previously highlighted how the dynamics between admins and members has shifted over the years because of how many roleplays that will open and then be abandoned without notice, which upsets members because of the work they also put into learning the guidelines of the space, how the world works, and on top of that the muse they created and hoped to write no longer having a space to be explored. we’re kind of stuck in this perpetual finger pointing circle because admins aren’t getting engagement from members while members are preemptively waiting for the admins to drop the ball.
that said, i think this might be why you might not be getting the engagement you hope to see. my advice would be, choose a premise that you want to do and skip waiting on the community response (since you’ve already tried that)! in the long run, when things get hard or start to feel drab for you as the admin, you want a premise that you’re going to want to keep running even through quiet lulls or hard moments. lastly, more so as a outside perspective, i think what could help stave off the bitterness and possible build up of resentment towards the community (paying no dust) is to consider why you’re really running the space. if you run a roleplay made as much for you as the community (and keep this in mind), you might feel better about trying to keep a place alive because what it means for you versus opening a space completely for the community and then placing all your expectations on them to enjoy it. i’m not saying this is what you’re doing, but just laying some points as a side by side in hopes that’ll help you break down your own thoughts and feelings about if you want to give opening a roleplay a shot still!
there’s no denial that adminning is hard work! especially when you want to write in the space you created too. at the end of the day, i would say, do what you want and then pivot and adjust if the idea isn’t grabbing anyone’s interest. i do think once you have a blog up and running where people can see something tangible, you’re much likely to get more engagement and expression of interest as you pull things together.
i hope that this helps and wishing you the best of luck, nonnie!
