Pretty in Ink

she smells like perfume 

a scent i have somehow become acquainted with times before

it is sexy at first, bitter with musk 

but the bottle gets closer and it starts to smell dangerous

maybe this isn’t perfume after all

now she smells like an entire fifth of tequila and an uncured past

a lethal mixed drink

there i was every night like a bloodhound trying to track down the source 

when the bottle was in front of us all along. 

The Package melted into my hands like sun beams on dry desert sands

it burned just the same

your smell somehow encapsulated within the four corners

even after miles of travel, you seeped out when I peeled it open

and it felt like years to lift its seal 

maybe meant to stay shut for good

i spot the orange cotton 

one of my favorites of the bunch 

now just a heap of decaying materials that i don’t even own anymore 

you put them on and stole them from me

you never wanted to return my belongings,

you just wanted to watch me bleed one more time

the smell nearly suffocated me 

one inhalation was like teargas assaulting my lungs and violating my peace

washing the material won’t wipe away the last 4 months 

crisp spring air feels like the most painful heartbreak 

now the fresh smells and blossoming buds remind me of my dead expectations and decaying hopes 

i never cared for spring much anyways
