synopsis: all it takes is one spontaneous kiss on the cheek to completely break karasuno’s reliable vice-captain. good luck surviving the rest of practice, suga!
the squeak of sneakers against the polished gym floor and the symphonic, booming smack of volleyballs echoed through the open doors of the karasuno gymnasium.
you stood just outside, fingers nervously smoothing the edges of the small paper bag in your hands. inside was a cold sports drink and some honey-marinated lemons. a simple excuse, really. but honestly, any excuse to see koushi sugawara was one you were willing to take.
to be completely fair, it was getting ridiculous how much he affected you.
sometimes you’d just look at him—at that messy silver hair, the little mole under his left eye, that smile that always felt entirely too bright—and think, it is actually unfair for one person to look like that.
there was no denying it anymore.
you were utterly smitten.
stepping up to the gym entrance, you peered inside.
"one more!" nishinoya yelled from the court, diving for a wild receive.
almost instantly, as if he had some sort of you-specific radar, suga's gaze flew right to the doorway. that familiar, boyish grin broke across his face as he immediately jogged over, wiping the sweat from his forehead with the collar of his jersey.
"look who it is!" he teased, stopping right in front of you. he was slightly winded and warm from practice, a few stray silver strands damp against his forehead. "did you come to rescue me, or do you just miss me already?"
"just thought my favorite vice-captain could use a little boost," you said, holding up the paper bag. "i made you some lemon slices—and brought a cold drink!"
suga’s eyes softened as he took it. "you’re a lifesaver, seriously! i was starting to think i wouldn't survive this set…"
"glad i could help," you kidded, ignoring how fast your own pulse was racing just from standing this close to him.
he let out a warm, grateful laugh. "thank you, really..."
before your courage could talk you out of it, you leaned in a fraction closer. "oh, and one more thing—for an extra boost."
tilting up on your tiptoes, you cupped his jaw and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to his cheek. suga froze completely, staring down at you with wide, shocked eyes as a vivid red rushed straight to his ears.
the gym went dead silent for a split second before the rest of the team completely lost their marbles.
"oho?! look at sugawara-san go!" tanaka hollered, shaking a starstruck hinata by the shoulders.
“was that a kiss?!” hinata gasped, eyes practically sparkling.
"ah, youth…" nishinoya wailed, clutching his chest. "it wounds me!"
“don’t encourage him!” kageyama snapped, though he was staring just as openly as everyone else.
somewhere near the back, tsukishima let out an unimpressed sigh. “get a room.”
“shut it, tsukishima!” tanaka and nishinoya snapped in unison.
suga quickly spun around, slapping a hand over his face as he yelled at his teammates. "hey! focus on your receives, all of you!"
that only made them laugh even louder.
“suga-san, your face is red!” tanaka shouted.
“it’s from practice!” suga fired back.
“you stopped practicing five minutes ago!”
you covered your mouth, desperately trying to hold back your laughter.
when he turned back to you, that bright color still hadn't left his face, but the warmth shining in his eyes was undeniable. the noise of the gym seemed to fade away as he looked at you, his gaze radiating a heat so painfully gentle it made your chest ache.
"you're totally unfair, you know that?" he whispered, a breathless little laugh escaping him as a fond smile took over his face.
"target neutralized," you giggled, taking a few steps in reverse toward the exit.
suga's eyebrow lifted. “neutralized?”
“completely!” you pointed at his red cheeks. “look at you!”
he made a flustered sound, immediately lifting a hand to cover his face.
"go finish your drills, koushi," you grinned, retreating down the hallway. "i'll see you in a bit!"
"right," he murmured, hugging the paper bag to his chest as he watched you go. "see you in a bit…"
stepping outside, you let out a breathless laugh. the cool air did nothing to soothe the warmth in your chest. you had it bad, but judging by his red cheeks, he did too. and your heart was already counting down the minutes until you could be right back by his side.
