please please please don’t be mean or rude to the english dub voice actresses, whether or not you think they sound good or ‘right’ or whatever. they’re kind of stuck in a hard place because of how closely connected the characters are to the japanese seiyuu and no matter how hard they try or how well they do a lot of fans are going to dismiss them and criticize them from the get go. remember that these are real women doing their jobs and they don’t deserve any hate for not being the seiyuu. they aren’t replacing them - they never could - they’re simply helping to make love live more accessible to more audiences (there are a lot of reasons why subtitles aren’t always an option for people). they all seem really excited to be voicing the characters, and i know at least rin’s VA gave a shout-out to rippi which is really sweet!!

i’m not saying that folks have to watch and love the dub or else they’re bad people or anything, but i do think it can peacefully coexist with the original japanese dub. and i know i had some kneejerk reactions to it when i first saw the trailer, but after seeing a few clips, they really don’t sound bad at all. (erica mendez does a great nico nico nii)

I can’t speak for the other actresses, but I’ve personally dealt with a LOT of negative comments, including someone who said something along the lines of “when will Umi’s VA learn that NOBODY SOUNDS LIKE THAT IN REAL LIFE” when in contrast to my usual higher pitched roles, Umi was pretty much done in my natural voice tone—so sorry to burst your bubble, but I do actually sound like that haha. Some of the comments are just funny (”why does English Umi sound like Ash Ketchum”) but others were actually quite hurtful, and as a person who suffers from anxiety and depression, some of them messed me up pretty bad to read. I know this will ALWAYS happen in this line of work especially on the Internet, and at the end of the day I’m a big girl who can handle it, but I just wanted to provide perspective because a lot of people don’t realize that we read these comments, and that voice actresses are human too.

I have no issue whatsoever with people preferring the Japanese voices. They defined the characters originally and helped many people to fall in love with their favorite girls as much as they did. It’s totally okay if you would still rather watch it in Japanese and even if you’re critical of the dub, as long as you are not personally attacking or harassing the English dub VAs (which seems like a no-brainer, but trust me, it’s happened.)

I am a Love Live! fan and have been since before I ever auditioned for the dub. In fact, my phone is running out of space with how much room the game app is taking (Nico’s, Rin’s and Nozomi’s ENG VAs play as well!) so I promise you, from the bottom of my heart, the last thing I would ever do is set out to ruin your favorite character. Umi is very dear to me just as she is to you. And every one of us put our blood, sweat and tears into doing our jobs the best we could.

The other thing I want to point out is that the voice actors have zero control over the script/translation changes. Again, it’s totally okay to be upset about these things, but I assure you I was not personally responsible for “Love Arrow Shoot” changing to “Arrow Of Love” (one of the big things I’m getting hate for). We recorded several alternate versions of that line, including the original, and that’s the one they went with - maybe it fit the lip flaps better, or who knows what. It happens, and hopefully at the end of the day people won’t think it’s such a big deal.

Anyway! This is getting long, so thank you again for your post. I hope some of you will see this and at least decide to give a few episodes of the dub a chance.
