Does anyone have tips on how to survive Christmas depression?
It's only November, but stuff is already on TV and here in South Australia, we have the Christmas Pageant (parade) today and hubby enjoys watching it but even just the beginning has me feeling low and I have to endure this for the next two months. By December, I'm loathing it all.
Anyone have tips or equally suffer this? I have no love for this time of year (for complex reasons) and I don't want to feel this way...
âDonât allow perfectionism to wear you down. Remember itâs being together and goodwill that matters.
âMake time to rest and rejuvenate even amid the pressure of getting things done. This will give you more energy.
âResearch has shown that warmth improves mood. If youâre sad or lonely, treat yourself to a warm bath or cup of hot tea.
âSpend time alone to reflect and grieve, if necessary. Pushing down feelings leads to depression. Let yourself feel. Then do something nice for yourself and socialize.
âDonât isolate. Reach out to others who also may be lonely. If you donât have someone to be with, volunteer to help those in need. It can be very uplifting and gratifying.â

And donât forget you can lean on your agere family if you need to, myself included. If you ever need to vent about your complicated situation and history with the holidays, Iâm sure weâd all be happy to listen and provide sympathy if needed. đ You donât always have to be the strong big sis, itâs okay to need help and reach out for it.

Full Body Scan - Mindfulness
This is a good way to relax, calm yourself and get ready for bed. It can take some practice, especially if you're not used to mindfulness techniques, but once you get the hang of it, it's super helpful. You can also find guided scans online or on apps such as Headspace. I personally prefer mindfulness, but you can find scans using yoga or more spiritual guidance.
Time Needed - 5-10 minutes
Lay down on a solid surface such as the floor, or sit in a chair with your hands on your thighs and feet flat on the floor.
Close your eyes.
Take a minute to find your breathing. Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Notice the feeling of the air moving and filling your lungs.
Now, starting at your feet, begin to notice each part of your body and how each part feels. Your heels on the floor. Each toe. Wiggle each section if you need to feel them. Focus for a brief moment before moving upwards. Ankles. Calves. Knees etc
If you're thoughts start to wander, don't worry. That's what brains do. They think. Gently guide your thoughts back to the exercise and continue.
If you notice tension in any part of you, try letting it go as you continue to notice your body.
Finish by noticing your head. How your scalp feels, the pressure of the floor or any other sensations.
Lastly, imagine a light forming in your chest. Just imagine that this light is warm and expanding until it moves freely over your limbs, encompassing your whole body. Just relax.
When you're ready, carefully ease back into the now. Open your eyes, wiggle your body and gently get up.
Enjoy your relaxation.

THINGS LITTLES CAN DO TO DEAL WITH STRESS
đ¸Â Breathing exercises!
đ¸Â Communicate with someone like your caregiver; talk about why youâre stressed! Donât bottle up your feelings.Â
đ¸Â Maybe practice yoga or do some exercise.
đ¸Â Listen to music that makes you feel little, relaxed, &/or happy!
đ¸Â Go on a walk.Â
đ¸Â Pet animals! Go to a pet store that lets you interact with the animals, play with a pet of your own, go to a dog park, etc. (If this isnât an option, you can just look at videos of cute animals, or something!)
đ¸Â Put on comfy clothes, or something that you feel super cute and little in!
đ¸Â Take a nice, warm bubble bath. Maybe light some candles, or use a wax warmer!
đ¸Â If youâre stressed about something school related, maybe study or prepare, or try to get some of the work done if youâre behind with stuff.
đ¸ Laugh! Watch funny videos on YouTube, perhaps.
đ¸Â Play a game with your caregiver, or ask for a cute little task to complete for them! (Coloring a picture, baking something, etc.)
đ¸Â Get out the things that make you feel little, like your favorite sippy filled with your favorite drink, a favorite snack, fluffy socks or cute thigh-highs, a onesie or pajamas, and whatever else.
đ¸ Turn on one of your favorite cartoons or movies!Â
đ¸ Snuggle up with lots of warm blankets and maybe browse your tumblr feed or look at things that calm you down/make you feel little.Â
đ¸Â Read a book, or have your caregiver read to you!
đ¸Â Just cuddling or being around your caregiver can make you feel lots better.
đ¸Â Plan ahead for things that youâre worried about!
đ¸Â Make a list of goals or chores to get done for the week so you donât feel overwhelmed.
đ¸ Make sure youâre going to bed on time, and are on a good, healthy sleeping schedule!
đ¸Â Do certain things in moderation, like TV, games, etc. Make sure youâre not doing one thing the whole day!Â
đ¸Â Get our your coloring book or scrap paper and whatever tools you use (crayons, colored pencils, etc) and draw or color!Â
đ¸Â Play dress-up!
đ¸Â Have tea-time with your caregiver and/or stuffies!
đ¸Â Clean up your room really nice! I find that being in a clean, fresh-feeling environment makes me feel much calmer.Â
đ¸ Do something cute with your hair, or maybe something you havenât tried before!Â
đ¸ Organize your stuffies, or other things.
đ¸ Take a nap! A lot of the time, you might just be cranky or stressed because youâre tired! Cuddle up with your caregiver or some stuffies and get your paci, if you use one!
