Giyuu, Obanai, and Sanemi Character Study Rambles
Have you ever wondered why Giyuu wants to be friends with Sanemi? I have too, so I did a sort of character study. I'm going to be using Giyuu, Sanemi, and Obanai for this.
Starting with Obanai!
(I'm not sure how well translated these images are, so there might be different interpretations out there!)
Obanai is a dick, but he's a dick with friends. Like he'd actually call people his friends and respect them. He respects Tengen enough to share their backstories, but still enough of a dick to insult Tengen first thing after his near-death encounter. He likes people who are open, or whom he can understand, like Mitsuri and Rengoku. Even Sanemi, cause Sanemi's always an overreactive person, and that's easy to understand, unlike Giyuu's silence, which is easily misinterpreted. But then compare Giyuu to Muichirou, and what's the difference in how Obanai would view them? Well, Muichirou is a child with memory problems, so his aloof nature isn't his fault, while Giyuu seems like a fully capable grown man who just secludes himself. Since Giyuu has been around with this group of Hashiras for a while (before even Shinobu, Sanemi, Rengoku, Muichirou, and Obanai), Obanai must respect his abilities enough that he could only attribute his attitude to ego rather than just being a loner or self-conscious (not that I think anyone would've naturally just assumed he's self-conscious since Giyuu really keeps to himself, but still.) All this to say, Obanai is rude but clearly still respects and likes other people he can get a read on. He shows it by hanging out with them and socializing with them. So Giyuu, who acknowledges that, takes Obanai's rudeness to heart because it's not like Obanai is a dick to everyone because he dislikes them all. Nope, he's a dick who really dislikes Giyuu specifically, and it's obvious by the unwarranted jabs made at his expense and refusal to be around him.
Sanemi
Sanemi, on the other hand, is a hater, but he's more reactive than just mean to be mean. Those who are calmer but kind get his respect more easily (perhaps they remind him of his mother, idk), but those who border on obnoxious are just too happy for his liking. He likes Obanai probably because he's calm, not "too much", but also respectable. Honestly, their whole relationship is a mystery to me because they seem like the most difficult to pair up. Sanemi is mad reactive, and if Obanai made one of his usual rude comments, Sanemi would probably shove his sword down his throat. So they must've had a REALLY good first impression, like good enough that they understand each other's nature and know not to take shit personally from the get-go. They must've both been in decent moods when they met.
Giyuu
Anyways, Giyuu sees a person who is rude but does get along with people, and someone who is a coin flip on how well they'll treat you in the moment. So Giyuu doesn't take Sanemi's comments as personally as Obanai's. And seeing how he tells Shinobu he's not disliked, while he might not outright call Mitsuri, Shinbou, Rengoku, Gyomei, or even Tengen his "friends", I feel that he interprets their kindness/respect as being liked. It's probably not too much of a challenge in his head to befriend them. Maybe he wants the challenge of befriending the hardest person to befriend, Sanemi, or maybe he's just that bad at socializing. Maybe it's the thought that since Sanemi gets mad so easily, it wouldn't be that hard to make him happy. So viewing him like "Ah, yes, it's just one of his mood swings. Classic Sanemi."
Honestly, I don't know why he'd choose Sanemi out of all people, but I'm using this as an excuse to read into these characters' relationships.
I'm def gonna have more to say on this later, so edits incoming lol
Demon Slayer Questions
I've been reading a lot of fanfic (not even Demon Slayer related lol. [Mostly Dr. Stone] ), so I started noticing how many interpretations there were for small things never mentioned in canon media. Now, I'm curious for y'all's!
Do you think Hashiras are allowed to assign missions to their tsuguko? Like, rather than tsuguko's having their missions decided by distance, ability, or even just Master Ubuyashiki, what if it's mainly decided by the Pillars? Or at the very least, any missions coming to them from their Hashira is their main priority, and the crows know not to interject with different orders. Perhaps not without permission or unless it's more presently urgent than their current mission. Or maybe (knowing that Master Ubuyashiki has somewhat precognition abilities) it's all decided by Master Ubuyashiki, who does what instinctively feels best, and it's just his personal principle to try and keep the tsuguko with their Hashira.
Also, knowing that Kanao became Shinobu's successor only after becoming a demon slayer, can Hashiras only properly claim a successor once they've passed the final selection? We know Kyoujurou was Mitsuri's cultivator, but was she officially his successor before becoming a demon slayer? Personally, I assume that Hashira's with all their power, could easily claim a tsugoku beforehand, BUT is it common practice to wait?
In the instance that a Pillar is away from their Designated Patrol prefecture, do you think more demon slayers are expected to patrol those areas, those nights? Do ALL slayers patrol EVERY NIGHT? We know they get paid (the big bucks), but do they get vacation days? Are breaks only for those who are injured or sleeping? Or is everything just supply and demand? You get to chill if there's no demon activity, and you have to work if there is.
Also, we know that Hashiras have Designated Patrol "Regions," but do all demon Slayers do as well? Like we see Tanjirou, Inosuke, and Zenitsu running around, but isn't that just because they tend to be nearby to the situation? Especially Tanjioru. He's such a main character; we shouldn't expect anything that happens to him to be the example of a common experience. But like maybe they're just like the Hashiras who have prefectures assigned, and if the mission itself leads them to running out of the area, then so be it. Or maybe it's not as official as it is for a Pillar and their "assigned" prefecture is whichever they end up in. I guess that'd just mean all missions are based on distance.
That leads me to think about how are demon slayers are expected to live, or at least, how do they often live (like day-to-day living, not survive lmao)? Like I feel like it would be something similar to the college experience. You get a handful of money every time you do your job, and you have what feels like no stability, so you're living paycheck to paycheck (even if the amount is big enough since they can't carry a bank everywhere ), and you're sort of going wherever the wind guides you. Aka they don't own homes, stay at inns most of the nights, and just live every night like it's the last, cuz for most of them it might be. Are those who save and plan for retirement considered idealists or rationalists? Would someone be foolish to do that, or a pessimist to ask that?
I have a feeling that true urgent moments throw all common practice out the window. But I still wonder about the natural expectations, aka common sense, in the Demon Slayer Corps.
Anywho, thanks for indulging me. Please answer your thoughts and bye-bye.

How would you say the demon slayer corp determines slayer's ranks??
Demon Slayer Rank Determination
While this has been explicitly mentioned in Rengoku Kyojuro Gaiden, fanbooks, and throughout Demon Slayer, it becomes confusing when taking in other canon details.
Rank determination is something I've looked into before, and this is what I came up with. I don't remember all my reasons for some of these things, but we're gonna trust my past-self diligence XD
How I believe Demon Slayer Rank Determination could've worked:
Individual rank determination after a mission in the Demon Slayer Corps involves several factors: the strength of the demon, the number of slayers needed to defeat it, the time taken to locate the demon, the number of casualties during the mission, and the extent of a slayer's involvement.
While assisting in missions can help a slayer climb the ranks, the highest rank achievable through involvement alone is Kinoto.
To reach Kinoe, a slayer must personally behead 50 demons or single-handedly slay a member of the Twelve Kizuki.
To achieve the rank of Hashira, a slayer must be Kinoe, demonstrate impeccable quality in their missions, and have mastery of their breath.
Most Demon Slayers take a long time to rise through the ranks because solo missions are uncommon. If slayers fought solo and killed even just one demon a month, they would reach the Kinoe rank in about four years. But that’s rarely the case. Most slayers patrol, respond if a demon is nearby, investigate, or join group missions.
Seeing how even Kyoujurou was on a mission investigating missing people from a train for around two months with the involvement of several demon slayers, I'd say Tanjirou, Inosuke, Zenitsu, Kanao, and Genya are rare exceptions due to their unique, evolved senses helping speed up investigations. (Smell, Feeling, Sound, Sight, and Taste)
So why is no one in the Kamaboko squad a Hashira?
Tanjirou, Inosuke, Genya, and Kanao never defeated one of the Twelve Kizuki completely on their own, and Zenitsu hadn't mastered his breath, only knowing the first form of Thunder Breathing.
But damn, they at least deserve an honorary title 😭.
I bet that if demons were still around after Muzan's death that Kiriya Ubuyashiki would've made exceptions. There being only two Hashiras left after all, and one of them was freshly without an arm 🧍.
Also, I'm unsure how beheading credit is given when it comes to demons that could turn into multiple. Who knows, maybe Ubuyashiki was like "Unfortunately, you've only killed 49.5 demons, so I can't make you a Kinoe yet :("
As always, I'll direct y'all to @demonslayedher for further details.

On the patrol regions, I think Obani has to be close-ish to Tengen since he was able to get to the Entertainment district relatively quickly when shit hit the fan. He was there just after the battle ended and before the sun came up, which means the journey was probably 5 hours or less depending on how long it took the crows to get there. Also, how do you think they were divided when Tengen retired? Obvs he wouldn’t IGNORE a demon nearby, but not being on active duty, someone else would likely be assigned.
Hashiras Designated Patrol 'Regions' Pt.2
You are completely right about Obanai! I can't believe I forgot that he showed up after Tengen's mission at the Entertainment District.
While there is a chance that Obanai was just coincidentally in the area (since we know from Shinobu in Giyuu Gaiden that Hashiras do, to some extent, get free time and can travel outside of their regions), I assume the implication was that Obanai's designated patrol region was closest to Tokyo.
Honestly, it's all a mess because if Obanai were in Tohoku or Chubu instead of Chugoku or Shikoku, then during Pillar Training, Tanjirou + all the Demon Slayers would've been just running circles all over Japan in less than a month. Plus, all of the Hashiras and Kamaboko squad hometowns were in Tokyo prefecture (except Tengen, which remains unknown).
@demonslayedher theorizes that Muzan knew the blue spider lilies were in Kanto because the doctor was from there, resulting in most demon activity being centralized in Kanto (such as new demons appearing around Muzan). I like this idea!
So this time, I'll take a new approach and consider where all the Hashira would be if the Demon Slayer Corp were based in the Kanto region instead.
The Kanto region in Japan consists of seven prefectures: Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa, Saitama, Gunma, Tochigi, and Ibaraki.
Tanjirou's Hometown is in Mt. Kumotori, which straddles the borders of Tokyo, Saitama, and Yamanashi Prefectures.
As I mentioned in my last post, Giyuu went on a mission to Tanjirou's Hometown when it was still Shinjurou's patrol region. I theorized that if they meant the eight regions in Japan, then the reason Giyuu was outside his designated patrol region could've been because Shinjurou was already on a steady decline in his responsibilities.
However, in the case it all takes place within the Kanto region, it's much more likely that Giyuu's designated patrol prefecture would've been Saitama (ignoring the Yamanashi Prefecture since that's in the Chūbu region).
This leaves Kanagawa as the other closest to Tokyo, which might be where Obanai was based.
Google Maps says it would take 11 hours to walk from Kanagawa to Tokyo (with current-day terrain and roads). However, if the Hashira live closer to the edge of each prefecture, to quickly be able to get to headquarters or Master Ubuyashiki, and if Obanai was hurrying (even though he was late smh), then I do think he definitely could have gotten there in around 5 hours.
Sometime after Giyuu's mission on Mt. Kumotori, he got sent on another mission to a nearby mountain range (close enough that news of the Kamado family's massacre had already spread there).
In Giyuu's Gaiden, it says that the village Shinobu and Giyuu were at was a Northern rest point, so I assume the mountainside was the ones bordering the Gunma prefectures, which are part of the Kanto Mountain Range and Okuchichibu Mountains.
At this point in the timeline, there would be six Hashiras: Shinjurou, Gyomei, Tengen, Giyuu, Sanemi, and Shinobu.
Shinobu said she was only visiting for herbal remedies and that she'd taken a boat to get there.
Saitama Prefecture and Chiba Prefecture share a border, which is defined by the Edo River. With that information, I will be placing her and the Butterfly Mansion in Chiba (again, I ain't never been to Japan lol. Take this with a spoonful of salt).
But then that brings the question of: Why did Shinobu and Giyuu get sent to Mt. Natagumo together?
Well, to answer it simply, it could just be because at that time they had nine Hashiras with seven prefectures, so there was no risk in sending one of the Hashiras away from their designated patrol 'region' since someone else shared the area or could cover for them.
In my last post, I said that Sanemi and Obanai going to the demon-filled house together could've been because Nezuko had conquered the sun, therefore their designated regions would've had low demon activity. However, that mission happened before the emergency Pillar Meeting, so they probably wouldn't have had permissions to go beyond their designated patrol regions yet. For that reason, I would've said that Sanemi was also stationed in Kanagawa. Plus, if Ubuyashiki made no exceptions on missions outside their areas (due to not leaving them unguarded), not even for the Twelve Kizuki, then Obanai being sent to Tokyo after Tengen possibly means he shared a designated patrol prefecture.
BUT when the demon-filled house mission happened, Tengen had already retired, so the Hashiras would've had to spread out to one Hashira per prefecture. While there's a chance that prior to Tengen's retirement, Sanemi and Obanai were the besties that patrolled the same area, we'll never truly know rip.
(Though I love the idea that the reason Obanai was so salty about Tengen retiring was because he and Sanemi would have to split up. LOL)
There's also a chance that Obanai didn't share Kanagawa with anyone and that he was only sent (with rare exception) because they had confirmation that Tengen was fighting a massively destructive Upper Moon.
As for why Sanemi and Obanai were allowed on that mission together, perhaps Sanemi took over the Tokyo prefecture after Tengen and the demon-filled house could have been at the border of Tokyo and Kanagawa. (But that's just a theory. A GAME THEORY.)
So with all that, my most confident placements for where the Hashiras lived/ where their Designated Patrol 'regions' would be: Tengen and Kyoujurou were in Tokyo, Obanai in Kanagawa, Shinobu in Chiba, and Giyuu in Saitama.
Gyomei, Sanemi, Muichirou, and Mitsuri could be in any of Gunma, Tochigi, or Ibaraki. I assume one of those who shared a prefecture had to take over Tokyo after Tengen's retirement. (I'm leaning towards it having been Sanemi. Although it's more likely that the shared patrol was in Fukushima Prefecture instead of Kanagawa, since it's the biggest in the Kanto region. However, Gyomei is fully capable of being responsible for that area alone.🤷)
Some extra stuff:
In the Kanto region, Tochigi Prefecture is known for having the most wisteria trees and many mountains, so I'd say that's where Mt. Fujikasane would be. Also, Saitama is considered the central prefecture of the Kanto region, so the Demon Slayer headquarters could be there.
The only bother with that Demon Slayer headquarters placement is that we saw Tanjirou get carried from the headquarters in the morning and arrive at Butterfly Mansion while the sun was still out. If the Butterfly Mansion is in Chiba and the headquarters is in Saitama, then Google Maps says on foot it would take almost 13 hours. Though maybe it'd be possible depending on where exactly in the prefectures they were.
I'll leave the specifics of that up to the professionals (people who live in Japan, lmao).
Alright, that was fun, and thank you for the question! Now I'm going to sleep.
Hashiras Designated Patrol Regions
In Rengoku Kyoujurou Gaiden, Kyoujurou is sent in his father's, Shinjurou's, place to exterminate a demon in Shinjurou's patrol region. When Shinobu expresses concern about sending a non-Hashira to handle possibly one of the Twelve Kitzuki, Ubuyashiki says that he can't give them a mission outside of their designated patrol regions. This shows me that he doesn't make exceptions on missions outside of their designated regions, even for the Twelve Kitzuki.
At the time when Rengoku is at this meeting, there are five Hashiras, so they were likely stretched thin watching over all these areas. When the current story takes place, we start with nine Hashiras.
It is possible that Shinobu and Giyuu watched over the same region at the time of the Mt. Natagumo mission, and that once Kyoujurou died that some of the Hashiras reaccommodated their designated patrol regions, with either Shinobu and Giyuu switching with Tengen so that he could take over Kanto (since the Entertainment District Arc takes place in Yoshiwara, a red-light district in Tokyo). Then the reason that Obanai and Sanemi went on a mission together to the demon-filled house could be because Nezuko had just conquered the Sun, so there wasn't as much demon activity in their regular areas.
The only contradiction with my theory would be that Giyuu went on a mission to Tanjirou's Hometown, which was in Mt. Kumotori, the Kanto region, when it still would've been Shinjurou's patrol region. Plus, in Tomioka Giyuu Gaiden, he was sent on a mission to another mountain range near Mt. Kumotori, where Shinobu already was. However, we can excuse Giyuu's presence at Mt. Kumotori, as him taking over when Shinjurou was probably slacking off, and in Giyuu's Gaiden, Shinobu said that she was only at that mountain range to get herbal remedies, not on a mission.
Now the question is, which region do each of the Hashiras patrol?
Japan has eight regions: Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto (where Tokyo is), Chubu, Kinki (sometimes referred to as Kansai), Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu (which includes Okinawa).
Assuming that all the Hashiras live on the edge of the region they patrol, and that the Demon Slayer headquarters is at the center (likely around the Chubu region), we're going to have to rely a lot on anime logic for this.
Considering that walking from the edge of Japan to its center is a distance of approximately 1,500 km, not taking into account rough terrain, it could take around 3 to 4 weeks. Still, Hashiras can run fast enough that the average human eye can't catch them. We know they can travel huge distances in a short time.
However, remember that during pillar training, Tanjirou got from house to house in a day. That being said, we could assume that the order in which pillar training took place was based on distance and not ability.
Even if Tengen patrolled Kanto, he might not have moved yet, so perhaps his home and training still took place in Hokkaido. I only say Hokkaido because it makes it easier to work down the line, rather than expecting all the trainees to have to circle back. Muichirou's training came next, which would put him at Tohoku. After Tengen retired, Mitsuri's patrol changed to Kanto (it feels unrealistic, cause how does she have a whole mansion with cultivated beehives there in such little time? Oh well). We'll put Shinobu's Butterfly mansion in Chubu since everyone always goes there, and Chubu is the central region of Japan. Giyuu could be at Kansai since an injured Tanjirou got to him from Chubu. Obanai could be in Chugoku, Sanemi in Shikoku, and Gyomei in Kyushu.
So if Shinobu and Giyuu patrolled the same region, let's say Chubu, and then one of them switched with Tengen once Kyoujurou died so Tengen could patrol Kanto, then: Shinobu stayed in Chubu, Giyuu went to Hokkaido, Tengen to Kanto, then once Tengen retired, he went back to Hokkaido, Giyuu to Kansai, where Mitsuri had been, and Mitsuri to Kanto.
I like the idea that Tengen and Mitsuri would be dedicated to keeping that area safe in honor of Kyojurou. Also, I think Giyuu isn't attached to where he's placed, so he's willing to move around
Now this is all speculation from someone who has never been to Japan, so I don't know how the areas look compared to where we saw each individual Pillar training take place. Also, the thought that human beings could cross such massive distances in such a short amount of time already makes this a big stretch; however, Demon Slayer is far from logical when it comes to time.
There's a chance I interpreted this wrong, and by regions, they were referring to prefectures within Kanto since most of the story takes place there, and the majority of the characters' hometowns are in Tokyo. The Kanto region in Japan consists of seven prefectures: Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa, Saitama, Gunma, Tochigi, and Ibaraki.
However, if we interpret it this way, that would mean that all of the Hashiras reside within the Kanto region and that the rest of Japan isn't patrolled by Hashiras. I suppose it's possible, considering that they only have hundreds of demon slayers and that most of the demon activity seems to happen in the Kanto region. I'll leave that up to you to decide.
If you see any inconsistencies or have any theories of your own, please share!
@demonslayedher has more put-together info on other demon slayer-related stuff, so go to her for all that!
I was curious what Kanae's height was since different sources said different things. Putting all these images side by side, I can deduce that she's likely 5'2 to 5'2 1/2.
Kanae was 15 - 17, and small Shinobu was around 12 - 14. Older Shinobu is 18 and 4'11 1/2.
While I was at it, I checked Kanao's ref sheet. At around 10 years old, malnourished Kanao was 3'9.
For the hell of it, here are all of them together.
See 15 - 17 year old Kanae's height next to 16 year old Kanao? Well, look at the following.
The image above with Kanae and Kanao would be of Kanae at 21 and Kanao at 16. Assuming they're standing at the same level, Kanae reaches almost 5'7 there.
Since Kanae's reference images were used for her when she first found Kanao, it's possible Kanae grew a little more before she died at 17, or that she would've grown more after.
However, even after messing around with the picture a bit, the anime's proportions don't exactly line up with the reference images. So take that all with a grain of salt
Hope fellow fans will have a use for this!
