They both walked into Mozart’s piano room, Leonardo carrying the easel and canvas, while his partner carried the paint-caked palette and the paint she wanted to use. It was becoming later in the day, the sun was setting and in the back of Leonardo’s mind, he felt bad for leaving Napoleon alone in the kitchen, but if she wanted to spend time with him on her birthday, Leonardo had to comply with her wishes.
“See, look how cute!” She said softly, almost cooing as she saw the black cat sprawled out on the white piano. The contrast was striking, Leonardo did have to admit.
“If you want to get yourself settled, I can get some tea while you set up. I’m feeling like I could use a pick me up.”
She nodded, already distracted with finding the perfect spot to reposition the easel. Her tongue was peeking out through her lips as her eyebrows furrowed in concentration - it was such a funny little habit she had, and it was something that tickled Leonardo every time. With a small laugh, he left the room, and headed towards the kitchen.
“Napoleon!” He called out as he walked in, and the man with kind jade eyes smiled back at him.
“No need to explain, you want it to be a surprise. I understand. Luckily for you, the cake is cooling off now, so all that’s left is the frosting once it’s able to withstand not melting.” Napoleon finished washing off the last dish, and Leonardo sighed in relief.
“I owe you one, thank you.”
“You owe me nothing.” Napoleon took off the apron, throwing it in the pile that Sebastian had of the other dirty ones. “She’s my best friend, I’m happy to help. It’s for her birthday and she deserves it.”
The Italian man sighed in relief, once again thanking Napoleon profusely before heading out of the kitchen with a fresh pot of tea, the kettle a gorgeous porcelain adorned with gold and rose accents.
As he found her in the room, he pulled a table closer to where she was sitting, a serene look on her face as she looked at Lumiere, the brush dipped in black and poised at the ready. “Do you know what you should focus on first, Cara?” He asked, pouring the amber colored tea into a cup that matched the kettle. With the lowering sun peeking through the window and leaves of all different colors falling, Leonardo couldn’t help but think this was a perfect fall day.
“I was thinking about starting with Lumiere and building the background around him.” She replied, smiling fondly at the kitty who rolled onto their back, warming under the sunbeams still streaming into the room.
Leonardo set down the tea cup and pot, going to stand next to the seated woman on her other side as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders affectionately, watching as her brush connected with the empty canvas.
As she slowly crafted her painting, Leonardo watched in wonder as his beautiful wife followed all his suggestions, a gorgeous reminder of this day etching itself permanently into the stretched out cotton. It was a peaceful kind of quiet that she created in, only stopping when she wanted to ask him a question or Leonardo gave in and pressed a soft kiss into her temple.
Napoleon quietly came in when the moon was starting to riset, dropping off two slices of cake, one with a single candle lit in the middle, smiling softly as he wished her a happy birthday before retreating back out of the room.
Mozart came in a while later, huffing when he saw the pair taking over his space but as Leonardo looked apologetically at the other man, he acquiesced, instead choosing to argue over this another day and quietly slinking back to his room.
“And… Finished!” She exclaimed, her light eyes filled with happiness with sleep. Lumiere was long gone, yet she managed to capture his sleepy nature, as well as the peaceful environment he was sleeping in when the painting was started. Of course, there were some issues with the focus, as well as the center point, but that’s what made it unique and loved and Leonardo loved it, more than he expected to.
“I love it, Cara Mia.” Leonardo responded sincerely. He leaned forward in his seat, leaning his forehead against her own. “I love you. Happy birthday.”
She smiled, leaning in to press a soft kiss to his lips. “Thank you my love. I had a lovely day with you.”
A wicked grin crossed Leonardo’s face as he set the palette on the side table he had pulled up earlier. “The day’s not over yet. Can I give you one last present? It’s in my bedroom.”
“It’s in your bedroom?” She questioned, a cute line forming between her eyebrows as she furrowed them. “What is it?- Oh!”
His grin widened as she realized his intentions and before she could say anything else, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her to the room, not releasing his hold on her until she was on the bed, held safely in Leonardo’s arms. He leaned in to kiss her once, relishing in the raggedy breath that she let dance over his lips as he pulled away to study her face.
“Ti amo,” he whispered against her lips. The lit candles flickered golden light across her unblemished skin, and as he unbuttoned the dress, he watched as the flames danced across each new inch of exposed to him, her fingers raking through his messy hair as he leaned down to press a tender kiss to her bare stomach. “So much.”
“I love you,” she responded, her soft voice almost like a cadence to a song not yet written. It made Leonardo itch to pull out a sheet of paper and sketch his feelings for her into yet another portrait. Yet, he wouldn’t do it yet. Not until she fell asleep. He wanted to spend every waking moment like this together. Sketching could wait, loving her would never leave.
Leonardo would spend an eternity studying her like this, and it’d never be enough for him. He wanted forever and more, not just an eternity. But if that’s all he could get, he’d happily take it and meet her in his dreams once eternity was up.
