meetings between the knight and his prince had once been a delicate, thrilling dance, stolen glances turning to veiled flirting turning to touching and then to more… the prince sent summons for the knight nearly every evening under some guise or another, and the two would fall into bed, enamored with each other.
the king begins to pick up on it; nothing overt, of course, they’re relatively careful, but their love seeps out the edges of their interactions. the prince’s gaze lingers on the knight in the hall, the knight stands too close to the prince in public.
the king has the captain reassign the knight to the most grueling tasks; patrols along the frigid northern borders, training day in and day out with brand new recruits, night watch on the upper battlements after an already full day…
the prince is livid, but there’s nothing to be done. any of his own commands to the captain to ease up on the knight are secondary to the king’s. the knight bears it all with a grace and a patience that borders on holy, for speaking out would only implicate his prince further.
what tender moments that used to be full evenings of passion and teasing and joyful love are stripped down to an hour or less once a week; where before the knight would have slipped into the prince’s chambers and gone to his knees to ravish him, he now goes to his knees because he lacks the strength to stand any more than he’s required to. he lays his head in his prince’s lap, his eyes slipping shut, his breathing ragged.
the prince can do nothing but be still and let his poor love take his rest, his fingers combing gently through his hair, whispering soft adorations and praying he can find any sleep at all…
when their short time is up, the knight always musters up the energy to press a kiss to his prince’s lips, trying to convey all the words he is too exhausted to tell him. those grow shorter by the day, too, and he feels worse about that than anything else.
the prince can only watch him go, jaw tight, heart in pieces, already counting down the days and hours and minutes and seconds until they are together again.
