he appreciated the small gesture of the tighter hug, even if he was telling he had to leave earlier than expected. “that’s fine, what matters is you’re staying.” he answered, this time quieter and more sincere. he was still for a moment, before moving his body just a little to face minho better. he rested his hand under his chin to tilt it up, leaning down to meet his lips. he left a soft kiss there, dragging it out for a moment before pulling back. “i’m glad you came over.”
he tilted his head up and kissed him back. his heart couldn’t handle this, and he could be that jinwoo could feel it beating... embarrassingly so. he gently rested a hand on jinwoo’s cheek, letting his thumb softly stroke it. “imagine if i didn’t... both of us would be suffering right now.” he chuckled. only to hear a voice speaking loudly from one of the rooms: “don’t fuck on my couch!!” minho sighed. “well... great. moment ruined.”

when minho mentioned being awkward, jinwoo tugged on his hand a little, bringing him closer towards him. he let go of their hands to rest his arm on the back of the couch, inviting minho to rest against him. “you’re really cute.” he couldn’t resist complimenting him, pressing a kiss to his temple. “i’m not usually romantic. i just like you a lot.” he chuckled. “stay tonight? i’ll even be big spoon.”
minho scooted closer to him, and wrapped his arms around jinwoo’s body as he rested against him. like he expected, it was comfortable. just like all the times they’ve randomly cuddled before. “i’m not.” minho rolled his eyes, but felt the butterflies erupt the moment jinwoo kissed his temple. he never expected him to act this soft. “i’ll stay.” he tightened his arms around him for a short moment before letting them loose again. “i have to go in the morning, though... i’m sorry.” he sighed. “i’ll stay longer next time.”
jinwoo’s smile grew as minho answered, cheeks a little pink. “going slow works for me.” he responded without hesitation. it was a lot for him to take in too, and all he wanted was for minho to be comfortable. “wait. slow doesn’t mean we have to stop… you know?” he half joked, wiggling his eyebrows at the other boy. “we don’t have to label anything, and i don’t exactly expect a ring. i just want us to be exclusive, and i want to keep holding your hand, and i want take you on a real date.”
minho couldn’t stop smiling. how could this man manage to be this adorable? and this understanding?? he really appreciated that about him. minho rolled his eyes. “we don’t have to stop that.” he said with a laugh. he continued to listen to him, and nodding here and there as he gently played with jinwoo’s hand. “well... i like you a lot to not want to be exclusive.” he responded quietly, and looked at him with a little smile. “i want all of that too.” there was a short pause before minho spoke again. “i’m sorry for being awkward, by the way. i... i’m not used to this.” he chuckled.
jinwoo was certain that if minho got any closer, he’d feel his heart hammering in his chest. he matched the softness of the kiss, and it felt more intimate than anything else they’d done together before. after a short while, jinwoo couldn’t stop his smile from interrupting the kiss. “you like me.” he muttered against minho’s lips, leaving a few more small kisses there before leaning back again. “you like me.” he repeated it once more, laughing a little from relief. “so, now what? are we… is this… are we dating?” the question came out awkwardly and he shook his head, trying to get this right for once. “do you want to go on a date with me?”
minho couldn’t help but smile against his lips too when he heard what jinwoo said. he leaned back and looked at him, his eyes shinning with happiness and endearment. “i do.” he confirmed with a short nod. “well...” he shrugged. he leaned back on the couch and kept his hand held in jinwoo’s. “i’d love that... i want to date you. yes.” minho answered as he stared at their hands. “just... jinwoo, i don’t want things to move fast.” he admitted. “just admitting to feelings is hard enough... i want to be with you, but i don’t want to get... overwhelmed.” he paused and looked at jinwoo to see his expression. “so, uh... what do you think?”
“oh.” he repeated himself, this time with a smile. he moved his free hand to rest over their hands, just taking the moment in as he thought of what to say next. whatever nerves he had before were now replaced with excitement, and he couldn’t drag his eyes away from minho. “kiss me.” he spoke finally, a smile still on his lips.
his smile widened a bit, and it matched jinwoo’s own smile. he could tell just how fast the other’s mood changed, and he felt reassured to know that jinwoo was truly happy to hear him say all of what he said. minho playfully rolled his eyes, and rested his free hand on jinwoo’s cheek, before he leaned in slowly and kissed him so gently. it was so different to all the times he’s ever kissed him. it was always fast and heated, but this time was slow and sweet.

jinwoo’s stared at their hands as minho spoke, the butterflies coming back as he shyly moved his hand to intertwine their fingers as he listened. he looked up at him again after a few moments, taking in his features as he kept talking. “oh.” he tilted his head in thought, eyebrows furrowing a little. “you like me?”
minho wasn’t expecting his heart to go off so easily he watched jinwoo intertwine their fingers. the look on jinwoo’s face alone could easily make him melt as well. he nodded silently. “... if it wasn’t obvious enough... i must be such a good actor.” he smiled a little.
hearing such a quiet voice from minho made jinwoo almost reach out to hold his hand, but he stopped himself. “hey,” he spoke gently, trying to ignore how fast his heart was beating. “i wouldn’t lie about this.” he continued, searching minho’s features for some sign of how he felt. “i’ve been scared to admit how i feel. i haven’t been able to open up to someone in a long time and i really…” he lent back, gaze dropping to the floor. “i don’t want to lose you. even if it’s just as a friend, i want you in my life.”
minho’s eyes were stuck on him now... this was too much. he finally sat down next to him and rested a hand over jinwoo’s. he stayed silent for a bit, now looking at his their hands. it was hard to get the words out, and minho was embarrassed of how he was opening his mouth to speak and closing it again in the silent. he finally looked at jinwoo again and shook his head. “you won’t lose me.” he said. “uh... i get it. i... i’ve been scared too. i’ve been in big denial this whole time. i didn’t want to get my hopes up until...” he paused to take a deep breath. “well, u-until i heard you actually tell me this...” he looked away from him. “i may have been oblivious... but only because i didn’t want to make myself believe that this... you feeling this... is possible.”
jinwoo wasn’t good with talking about his feelings on a good day, but it was especially difficult now. “no, i’m sorry.” he sighed. “we were fine, we were more than fine. it’s been great.” he took a moment to think, trying to get his thoughts in order. “that’s kind of the problem. because i started to like you. i’ve tried to deny it, but i do. at first i could ignore it, but now i get butterflies when we kiss. when we watch a movie, i just want to reach over and hold your hand. i… i’m happiest when i’m with you.” he offered with a sad smile. “that’s why i have to stop because if i keep doing this, i’m going to break my heart. it’s too hard to be with you like that and pretend that i’m not falling for you.”
he’s been denying it to himself all this time. his past has resulted to him always being in denial and refusing to believe anything related to feelings. even hearing it now, it was hard to believe. minho stared at him, his expression was unchanged, but there was an obvious bit of shock on it. “you...” he spoke quietly, almost in a whisper. “... don’t lie like that, please...”
jinwoo was more nervous than he’d been in a long time, bickering with his friend because he was so on edge. “hey.” jinwoo answered quietly, fiddling with the t-shirt he’d thrown on in replacement of his pjyamas. “that’s okay, come in.” he moved out of the way before shutting the door, leading them both towards the living room. he sat down on the couch and took in a deep breath before finally meeting minho’s gaze. “i don’t know what to say, i thought i’d have time to prepare.” he laughed breathily. “i want you to know, i really didn’t want to end this.”
minho walked in and took his shoes off by the door like he usually did whenever he came over, then followed jinwoo to the living room. but he couldn’t sit down. “i’m sorry... i should’ve waited until tomorrow. but it’s been bothering me.” he shrugged, fiddling with the phone in his hands. the more jinwoo said he didn’t even want to end it, the more minho tried to keep his hopes down. it was hard. “then what happened? we were fine all this time...”
minho was pacing in front of jinwoo’s door at this point as he typed on his phone in response to mina’s texts. he could hear jinwoo and yubin whisper arguing behind the door, and it was only tiring at this point. his feet hurt. “just open the door already, god damn. it’s not that hard to turn a knob, is it?” he sighed, shoulders slumping as he stood in front of the door again. suddenly, the door finally opened and he saw jinwoo standing there, and figure behind him running to another room. he figured it was yubin. “... hey.” he swallowed the hard lump in his throat. “i just wanted to talk... i couldn’t wait until tomorrow...”

“i love you a lot.” jinwoo replied, smiling even though he knew how predictable it was. as he looked up at him, his softened, hand moving to brush hair away from minho’s face. it was messy from sleep, and jinwoo found him adorable as ever. “so, how does being old feel? do i need slow down when we walk now so you can keep up?”
minho’s smile softened. “i love you too.” it was cheesy, but he loved it. it still made his heart flutter. his smile disappeared, and a frown replaced it, bottom lip poking out like always. “that’s so mean! i’m only a few months older than you!” he whined, sitting up with his legs on either side of jinwoo’s body. “and you always walk faster anyway!”
instead of just gently taking him into his arms, jinwoo took his opportunity to dive into minho inside. he tackled him back down onto the bed, hugging him tightly and laughing. he then rolled over whilst holding onto his husband, letting minho rest on top of him now. “i think we should go out to celebrate today.” he grinned from beneath him.
minho wasn’t expecting to get tackled. he let out a surprised yelp and a loud laugh, arms wrapping tightly around jinwoo as he flipped them over. minho looked down at him, his smile so wide, it almost broke his face. he couldn’t help but lean down and kiss him. “i would love that a lot.” he nodded, lightly bumping his nose against jinwoo’s.
jinwoo just laughed softly as minho whined, endeared by it all. “it’s you day!” he laughed, clapping his hands excitedly. he helped him sit up, not resisting the temptation to kiss his face again, this time once on his cheek and once on the corner of his lips. “for you, there’s a note there too.” he added, pointing to the little yellow card inside the bunch. inside, it read “to my dear minmin, i hope you have the brightest birthday, i love you always” in the neatest handwriting jinwoo could muster.
minho giggled softly when he felt the little kisses on his face. he couldn’t help but move his face to kiss him properly once. “you didn’t have to.” he shook his head, smiling nonetheless. minho took the note and read it, his smile growing wider slowly. “my heart can’t handle this, you’re so cute!” he spoke, looking up at him again. “thank you, baby. i love you so much.” he opened his arms wide, silently asking for a hug.
“morning, sunshine.” jinwoo smiled as he walked into their shared room, the bouquet of flowers he’d sneakily bought that morning already sat on the bedside table besides minho. they were a mix of yellow, pink and white, of course featuring daisies and roses. he’d left minho’s usual mug filled with coffee on the coaster, as he sat perched on the edge of the bed. he lent down to kiss his forehead, pulling back with a wide smile. “happy birthday, baby.”
if there was one thing minho hated, it was waking up from a good night’s sleep. he whined when he was woken up, stretching his arms and legs under the sheets. “what...?” he mumbled, finally opening his eyes and looking at his husband. “oh!” he smiled widely. “it’s minho day!” he said cutely, arms reaching up as if asking for help sitting up. his eyes settled on the flowers next to him, and immediately looked at jinwoo again. “for me??”

“you’re not upset with me, are you?” minho asked quietly, voice sounding so small as he stared at the marble floor. his mother was standing in front of him in his room, arms crossed. what he didn’t see was that she didn’t have an ounce of anger on her face. she wasn’t that type of person. in fact, she looked like she felt so guilty.
“min, honey... of course i’m not.” she shook her head. “i should’ve talked to you more about it. i should’ve made sure you were really sure about the decision.”
“mom, you better not be blaming yourself.” minho looked up at her and sighed. she was still in her ball gown, looking so tired. he knew she had a lot of damage control to do after he left, and he felt so bad for it. “i should’ve been paying attention.”
“i’m sorry...” she said as she sat next to him on the edge of his bed.
“for what?” he couldn’t help but whine. “i said don’t blame yourself.”
“no, i’m sorry for not listening to you when you said you’d rather find someone you love.” his mother sighed, shaking her head. minho felt his heart clenching. “you deserve as much. i don’t know what made me keep pushing you around, but... i’ll stop.”
minho raised his eyebrows at what he just heard. his mother usually was more stubborn than he is. “... what?”
“i want you to take your time. find someone you love and if it’s ever the right person and the right time, you can do whatever you want.” she smiled softly.
this was bizarre to hear. minho has never been so confused. his parents were usually so set on finding him someone early so their son’s future can be set. “what about dad? weren’t you guys saying you weren’t getting any younger? what happened to that?”
“well, that’s just a terrible and selfish way to think, isn’t it?” his mother answered, ruffling his hair like he was still just a kid. to her, he was. “and don’t worry about your dad. did you forget who’s got the final word under this roof?” she chuckled.
“i-... okay...” he paused, looking down at his hands. “what-... what if it’s someone who isn’t from a royal family?” he asked. technically, jinwoo was from a royal family but... his curiosity ate him up.
“it would still be someone you love, right? i know you’d pick the right person.” she smiled once again and got up. his mother held his cheeks, gently squishing them and scrunching her nose. “stop frowning, you look better with a smile.” minho couldn’t help but smile a little. his mother never failed to make him smile. “good night. i love you!” she gave a little wave as she was about to close the door.
“i love you too, mom.” he answered, and his smile faded as soon as she closed the door. minho’s eyes landed on the clock.
12 am.
just three more hours to go.
“i better change.”
with a small bag over his shoulder, minho slowly opened the door to his room and peeked into the hallway. he knew that with a lot of guests from the ball, there would be a lot of people still in the palace, and a lot of them are family members that are staying for the night.
god, how bad minho felt for them for having to drop everything and come to this useless ball in his honor, only to have it go down the drain.
he quietly walked out of his personal apartment in the palace, and made it all the way to where the queen’s apartment was. he knew his mother would be asleep by now, so he slipped a piece of paper underneath the door and walked away and out of the palace.
“where are you going?” a deep voice suddenly said, and minho’s heart could’ve completely stopped right then and there. he turned around only to see taeil, kitae’s twin brother.
he was honestly a lot more intimidating to talk to than kitae ever would be.
“fucking hell, you scared the living fuck out of me!” minho responded, his hand going over his heart as he took a deep breath.
“it’s 3 am, why are you out?” taeil asked, looking like he couldn’t care less about scaring minho. it’s not like they had anything against each other, taeil just happened to be one of the bluntest people minho knew.
“n-nowhere...” minho stammered. “i could ask you the same thing.”
taeil raised an eyebrow at him. “now why would the crown prince go out at 3 am as if he’s going on a mid-day picnic on the hills? are you leaving or something?”
“... you better not tell anyone you saw me.” minho was panicking.
the letter he wrote to his mother said that he left early in the morning, not deep in the night. he said he would be going on a short trip to another city and would be back soon. and by soon, he means whenever he felt like it. but taeil... this man wasn’t stupid. he’d be able to read minho like a book just by looking at him.
“oh, don’t worry. i’m not gonna tell anyone. i personally don’t care about being a tattletale. go have fun with your fish boyfriend.” he shrugged, hands in his pockets as if he didn’t just say the most shocking thing.
“what?!” minho was shaking. this could put jinwoo in danger. he couldn’t believe someone found out just like that. “h-how did you-”
“oh, kit told me.” he answered.
“kit knows too?!” minho tried his best not to scream. he was scared for jinwoo’s safety.
“yeah? we saw you two together by the beach when everyone went looking for you. he glows like a damn beacon. we didn’t tell anyone where you were, though. we figured it wasn’t our business to tell anyone.” taeil said casually, as if he wasn’t talking about seeing a merman in front of him.
“and you’re not tripped out by the fact that you saw a real merman in person...?”
“bro, it’s fucking insane and very trippy. but what’s more confusing is that you’re dating a fish man.” he answered. “listen, i won’t tell on you, okay? it’s non of my business. kitae won’t either. you trust him, don’t you?”
“i-i do...”
“there you go!” taeil clapped once. “now go. your secret is safe with us.”
“you promise?”
“shit, min. i promise!”
“i thought you weren’t coming.” jinwoo spoke as soon as he saw minho walk into their usual cavern.
“sorry, baby. i got held up by a friend.” minho apologized, immediately getting to work on hiding his things. he walked further into the cavern, with jinwoo following him in the water as much as he was able to.
“d-did they figure it out?” jinwoo asked nervously.
minho looked at him, and nodded. he couldn’t lie. “just him and his brother.”
jinwoo suddenly looked shocked and scared. “w-what? you promised you won’t tell anyone! h-how did they know?!”
“jinnie, i didn’t tell anyone, i swear! i would never break a promise.” he responded, trying to calm him down. “they saw us when everyone was looking for me, and they decided not to tell anyone what they saw.” he explained as he completely turned off his phone and hid it in his bag. “don’t worry, okay? i’ve known them since we were kids, i know they’re good at keeping secrets. i trust them.”
“b-but what if-”
“baby, it’s okay.” he reassured him while hiding his bag in between some large rocks, using smaller ones to hide it better. when he was done, he turned back to look at jinwoo. “you trust me, right?” jinwoo nodded without hesitation. “then trust me when i say that i trust them.” he smiled softly, crouching down to gently kiss him. “so how are we doing this?”
jinwoo took a deep breath and sighed before finally getting back to his normal self, trying not to overthink everything else. “well, first step... you have to take your clothes off.”
“wha...” minho looked at him with wide eyes, a deep blush appearing on his cheeks. he honestly forgot to think about that. it never crossed his mind that in order for him to be like jinwoo, his legs would have to fuse together. “d-do i have to?”
“yes...?” jinwoo was confused.
“okay, uh... shit. turn around. don’t look.” minho urged, not wanting him to see him like that. at least not yet.
“w-what do you mean? it’s just clothes?” of course jinwoo didn’t understand the concept of covering up. he was a magical sea creature, for god’s sake. “i have to look at you in order to do the spell.”
minho sighed. “okay fine, just... just don’t look until i get in the water? i-i just don’t want you to see me naked.” he tried not to laugh. this situation was messy and a little funny. this was not the time to explain to jinwoo why being naked out in front of people is not something normal. jinwoo finally complied and turned around, innocently closing his eyes for good measure. if minho didn’t want him to see, then he wasn’t going to.
minho undressed and hid his clothes and shoes with his bag. he did everything as quickly as he could, he didn’t want to waste more time, and he didn’t want to keep jinwoo waiting. it was definitely strange to be completely naked inside of a cavern so late at night with a merman in the room. what a day, minho thought. he finally got into the water, and swam over to where jinwoo was to tap him on the shoulder. “i’m ready.” he said quietly, cheeks still red as ever.
the process took a while, and minho didn’t know what he was expecting, but he didn’t think it would be this painful. he almost wanted to scream because of how it felt like his body was burning and morphing right beneath his skin. he couldn’t help but hold onto jinwoo for dear life as the other muttered words in a language that sounded so ancient. minho really couldn’t pay attention to anything but the pain.
he suddenly felt another burning pain in his chest and all the way up to his neck, and he couldn’t help but yelp in pain. jinwoo held him tighter, wanting to soothe the pain somehow, but needing to continue with spell in order for it to be fully complete. minho’s eyes were completely shut and his face was hidden in jinwoo’s shoulder. he didn’t realize just how much the cavern was glowing in the night because of the power jinwoo held in his words. the stabbing pain in his legs subsided just a little bit, and he suddenly realized that he couldn’t move two legs like before. it was like... they were stuck together.
the pain in the rest of his body was slowly going away, and he felt so tired just after going through that. “d-did it work?” he asked when he realized that jinwoo had stopped muttering things.
he looked up at him, only to see him smiling widely at him. “it worked.” he nodded.
that’s when minho looked down and saw the big, glimmering, light blue tail with hints of yellow that replaced his legs. “holy shi-”
“it worked!!” jinwoo cheered, wrapped his arms around minho once again and laughing. minho joined him, feeling happy about the result.
“this is insane!!” minho responded. his smile was so wide, it almost broke his face. “i’m- i’m a merman! like you! but... but blue! how did you know i liked blue?” he laughed, his hand going underwater to touch his own scales. it was fascinatingly strange to minho.
“i didn’t. you can’t choose your color. you’re just born with it.” jinwoo shrugged, his hands resting on minho’s cheeks. “i knew it, you’d be a pretty merman.” he giggled. “should we go then?”
“yes.” minho nodded, and he couldn’t help but kiss him once again. “wait... do you think you can help me, though? it’s a little hard to swim with a fin instead of two legs.”
“yeah, of course! this is like helping little baby mermaids.” jinwoo said with a little laugh, holding both of minho’s hands. “you are a little baby mermaid, technically.” he continued, and minho huffed, pretending he didn’t like being called a baby. jinwoo simply shook his head and grinned. “we can take it step by step. i’ll be with you every step of the way!”
“you know, it’s a little ironic to say step when i don’t have feet anymore.” minho couldn’t help but say as he tried to move his fin on his own.
jinwoo simply rolled his eyes playfully. “let’s go underwater, okay?” minho nodded and together, they went down. his human instinct told him to hold his breath, and that’s exactly what he did. with his hands held onto jinwoo’s tightly, minho tried to balance himself on his own. “why are you holding your breath?” jinwoo asked, suddenly laughing. and it was weird because minho could hear him a lot more clearly than he did back when he came down with him the last time.
minho realized what jinwoo pointed out, and reluctantly tried to breath normally. it was strange. it was like he was breathing from somewhere else that wasn’t his nose and mouth. that’s when he remembered that he’s got gills like jinwoo did. “being a fish is weird.” he stated, speaking underwater for the first time and finding it odd but still natural somehow.
meanwhile, jinwoo found this whole thing amusing. he was laughing and helping minho swim along the way. and to minho, this was like learning to swim as a kid all over again, except... it was somehow easier.
“what do you think?” jinwoo asked after a while of helping minho adjust to swimming as a sea creature.
“i love it.” minho grinned, swimming around jinwoo and watching his own blue fin in amazement. meanwhile, jinwoo was watching him. he’s never looked more in love than he did when he saw minho being happy and so smiley.
every time jinwoo opened up about something, minho knew exactly how to comfort him. it had always been that way, and jinwoo didn’t know how he did it. he kissed his forehead in response, showing his gratitude that way. “okay.” he answered quietly, nodding his head. his shoulders slumped as the pressure started to lift off himself, looking down at his hand again when he stepped back from minho. “do we have any bandaids?” he pouted cutely, the cut still stinging.
minho smiled softly, hand reaching up to gently push jinwoo’s hair away from his eyes. “i love you.” he reminded him, poking his nose softly as he did so. minho looked down at jinwoo’s hand and was reminded of the cut he got from the glass shards. “oh, shi- we do! which ones are you feeling?” he asked as he opened one of the top cupboards to take the first aid kit out. “gay rainbow or iron man?”
