You read the last text and turn off your phone, slightly smiling at the way everything was going according to plan. Even though Chan was currently bickering with Seungkwan, you knew his mood would instantly be saved at the news that he’d get to eat Mingyu’s cooking later. The house was surprisingly quiet, partly due to other frat members going home for the summer, but largely due to Mingyu and Seokmin’s absence.
“So,” elongating the ‘O’, Soonyoung slides a grocery bag across the counter next to you and begins unpacking it, “wanna play some Conker before you head out?”
“I can’t believe you still play that game,” your eyes roll at his suggestion as you hand the chips to him.
“Listen, it’s a really good game when you get past the shitty early 2000s graphics!” Soonyoung defends, becoming more serious as he continues to ramble about the game.
“I think you’re omitting the fact that you, yourself, Kwon Soonyoung, literally bought the game thinking it was a good condition Crash Bandicoot game as a mistake .” You remind him, recalling his frantic live updates on Twitter not too many months ago.
“Still, doesn’t the term ‘beautiful mistake’ exist for moments like this?”
“I respect your profound love for Conker, but tonight me and Chan are grabbing dinner with Gyu,” you look at him and notice his hand resting on the kitchen door handle, as if frozen in his thoughts. “Raincheck?”
He places the soda on the bottom shelf of the fridge and turns around to smile at you. Leaning over to close the distance a bit more, he tilts his head slightly. “One more raincheck and you’ll make it up to me, right?”
You bite the inside of your cheek and try your best to break eye contact with his intense gaze. How was it not obvious before? Nodding your head, you reply in the most chill tone you could attempt. “Yeah, no worries.” A comfort silence falls onto both of you, before Seungkwan and Chan’s footsteps can be heard coming from upstairs, surely to hide the decorations in Seungkwan’s room.
“So, you’re saying Jun won’t be performing at the showcase?”
“For the millionth time, no because his ankle is injured.”
“This is so unfair, he’s the hottest one.”
“Ouch-“ Chan puts a hand on his heart, feigning pain.
You look back at Soonyoung, whispering to him, “Speaking of your showcase, would you want to throw a surprise afterparty for Chan? I was going to mention it earlier at the skate park but you seemed pretty preoccupied.”
“Wait, yes!” He exclaims loudly, causing Seungkwan and Chan to turn their attention at the two of you, “sorry, Y/N got our house cookies and I didn’t see them until now,” he covers up, believable enough for the two of them to continue their conversation about Jun.
“Seungkwan knows already, that’s why our shopping list was so long. Two parties, double the prep. Could you tell Minghao and see if he has any ideas?”
“Of course, leave it to me!”
a/n: sorry for going without saying anything T_T! it was a very hectic past couple of days. but i will be posting another part in 12 ish hours and then probably maintain that schedule to finish this series up quicker!

You tap your foot impatiently against the apartment floor while looking at your watch again, “Chan, we had to be out of here like four minutes ago.”
Your roommate comes out of the bathroom while haphazardly throwing a hoodie on. “Can’t you just drive faster to their place?”
“And you want to pay for my speeding ticket?”
He nods, understanding the naivety behind his comment. “No…”
“You have to ask for Seungkwan’s forgiveness, not me,” you shrug, grabbing water bottles filled with ice and water for the two of you.
“Think he’ll understand if I give him Jeonghan’s number?”
You turn around, looking amused at your friend’s solution as he sits on the floor to put his overly complex shoes on. “And you think Jeonghan will forgive you if you do that?”
“Good point.”
“Have everything?” You check one final time, as he gives you a thumbs up and holds his hand out to take his water bottle. The two of you run out the door, quite literally, as Chan locks the door and you head down to the parking lot.
Chan plops into the passenger seat, breathless from running down the stairs.
“Wanna queue any songs?” You offer your friend the aux, before pulling out of your parking spot.
“You know it.” He starts humming the melody slightly, before playing shoot by no na.
a/n: seungkwan runs a tight ship! next part will be posted before noon (i say for the nth time).

You look at the message on your screen over and over again, unable to fully process what you were reading. Half inclined to see this as some kind of elaborate prank orchestrated by Jeonghan and Soonyoung, but you needed confirmation of your suspicions. Springing up from the kitchen table, your feet shuffled against the apartment floor and eventually dragged your body to the front of Chan’s door.
“Chan? Urgent advice needed.” You hear him groan, and the sheets rustling before seeing light turn on underneath his door.
“I’m at your-“ he pauses to yawn dramatically, “service.”
Plopping onto the corner of his bed, you lightly shake his arm for him to sit up. He still had his hoodie over his head, resembling how he looks whenever a scary movie comes on. Stretching out his arm, he hit the switch on for the lamp on his nightstand. Chan squints at the brightness, before yawning once again. Turning the brightness down on your phone, you sit cross-legged before passing it to him. He mouths the words on the screen, able to fully focus despite being just woken up.
“What’s wrong with it?”
“Why would he ask me to come over if Mingyu is fine? I mean Jeonghan got into my head that Soonyoung has feelings for me which is absolutely ridiculous, right?”
Chan rubs the sleep out of his eyes before tilting his head slightly at your words. “You know I love you—platonically—but the idea that Soonyoung having a crush on you never crossed your mind?”
“No, I mean, maybe I just didn’t want to see it,” you groan, frustrated, that you didn’t realize the scale of his crush. “Would it work if I just ignore his message and text him back in the morning that I fell asleep?”
“You? The resident night owl? Yeah, I doubt he’ll buy that.”
“So then what do I do?!”
“Talk to him about it?”
You look at Chan’s window to see the view of city lights and purse your lips, “Uh, what else can I do?”
“What do you want to do?”
“Ignore it. I mean I knew he was a little friendlier to me but I just figured it was because of my closeness to Gyu. Me and Hansol just got out of our relationship when he moved, I don’t really want to put Soonyoung through that if I get a job where I have to relocate. Plus, he’s going into his senior year where it’s so stressful and-“
“Y/N-“ Chan’s taken aback from your worries being laid out.
“You guys have that dance showcase coming up, I don’t want to be a point of stress or distraction for him-“
Chan put his free hand on your knee, repeating your name. He knew these spirals, he tried to pull you back into reality. “Those are in the future, focus on the present. What do you want to say to him right now?”
You take a deep breath in, snapping out of it. “Thank you, Chan.”
He twirls his hand frivolously before placing it on his heart, “My services are always available, roomie.”
Rolling your eyes, you give him a quick hug before grabbing your phone back. “Night bro, for real this time.”
“Night.” He waves loosely, wasting no time to turn his lamp off.
a/n: please forgive how late this is T_T two other parts will be posted later today/by midnight!

a/n: fun fact that when y/n mentioned the posters soonyoung wanted to ask them to make him one, but he got too shy and missed his chance. also mr. shy can't ask for signs to cheer him on but can invite y/n over???? make it make sense...guess we act a little silly when we're in l-o-v-e.

“So you’re really going to buy him that..?” Chan looks at the apron that had World’s Best Cook written on it with Pompompurin wearing a chef’s hat below the text. Somehow, no one had snatched it up just yet.
“We both know he’ll be pouty after being called a clown. But combine us surprising him by picking him up from the airport and this? I mean it can be a graduation esque present…and if he doesn’t like it then I can just have it!” You ramble off, throwing the apron into the small shopping basket that was nearly full already. A few pairs of shoes along with various accessories that you would be altering as a thank you and departure gift for your loyal customers throughout your four years at the university.
“There was an ulterior motive after all.” Chan’s words snap you out of your thoughts.
“What can I say, I can’t ever leave Pompompurin alone,” you shrug and spot snapbacks and other caps that look like Chan’s style. “Wanna check those out and go grab a bite to eat?”
He nods fervently, finally having something in this morning chock-full of your errands be of interest to him. Although, he knew deep inside he shouldn't be one to complain since he volunteered to go with you.
You watched your friend stare at the worn out diner menu as his eyebrows furrowed and he tapped his index finger against the laminated paper. “You’re just going to get a burrito and americano anyways,” you sigh, sipping on the water the server first brought you. The diner was all too familiar, being located halfway between your apartment and the airport. Many late night memories formed on way too many drinks and the diner’s greasy but irresistible french fries pass through your head.
Chan halts his rhythmic tapping and looks at you incredulously. Well, as much as he could with his sunglasses on. “Hey, I can be spontaneous too!”
Humming a mhm, the corners of your mouth upturn themselves. “No hate, no hate. But, I told you I could pick up Gyu on my own, you know.” You look at your friend’s disheveled hair after his several unsuccessful hat try-ons.
“Our best friend is coming home after two weeks in NYC with Vernon…I wouldn’t abandon you to deal with him talking your ear off alone.” Chan firmly reasons, turning his phone back on most likely to check Mingyu’s flight progress.
You nod, appreciating your friend’s consideration for you. “This is what roommates are truly for, in sickness and health, right? Although are we really stooping so low to be counting hangovers as sickness right now?”
He scoffs before showing you his phone to show Mingyu’s plane just landed, “Hey, but whose fault is it that I drank last night?”
“I offered paying for KBBQ and a few drinks, not for you to go crazy and drink three soju bottles by yourself!”
“Okay, but it’s cheating if you bring me to a restaurant with karaoke upstairs,” he retorts surprising himself at the increase of his voice’s volume. He massages his temples, instantly aware of his headache again and regretting his defensive nature. The server walks over to the table, noticing both of the menus were pushed aside towards the outer edge of the booth.
“Do you have any questions about the menu?”
“I’ll just take the monthly special! But with the frosting on the side please.” You wanted to try their new Lotus Biscoff soufflé pancakes ever since a few influencer TikToks and Instagram Reels popped up on your algorithm, what better time than now?
Chan glances at you before speaking, “And I’ll have the No.3 burrito with samgyeopsal as the protein please.”
You stifle a laugh as the server silently writes the order on their notepad, “Anything to drink?”
“I’m good with just water, you?” You nod your head in Chan’s direction, knowing well what his response would be.
“Large Americano, if you can.”
The server writes the last of the order before grabbing the menus from the table, “No problem!”
“Spontaneous, huh?” You prod with a smirk before opening the plastic bag next to you to take out a beanie you purchased. “Maybe trying on hats with bedhead wasn’t the best idea...”
Chan grabs a spoon to see his reflection and covers his mouth comically at the state of his hair. Before you could offer the beanie he snatches it from your hand. “How is it even worse than when I practice for hours?!”
“Hmm, sweat vs friction and static. I mean it’s giving mad scientist, if you’re into that kind of thing?” You attempt to console him.
“Haha.” He dryly replies, clearly unamused.
Twenty minutes and your food was still nowhere to be found. It usually wouldn’t be an issue but the whole point of being out this early was to surprise Mingyu, not miss him completely. You anxiously wiggle your ankle under the table before raising concern to Chan, “Should we just ask to take our food to go?”
“Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing. It’s weird though, they’re usually super fast and the restaurant is dead anyway. But maybe they’re understaffed today?”
You try to look for the server to wave them down, but instead see... Mingyu? With your food? Your body acts before you can say anything to Chan and jump out of the booth to give Gyu a hug. Careful, of course, to not spill any of the food. After Mingyu put the food on the table, he greeted you back with one of his iconic bear hugs, neither of you caring about his slight sweaty self from the traveling. He daps Chan up, turning it into a quick hug as he takes a sip of your friend’s Americano.
Before Gyu could talk either of your ears off, the two of you hear a familiar giggle behind him. You hit Gyu's arm playfully, fully grasping the situation. “What the hell, we wanted to surprise you! Not the other way around, loser.”
Mingyu flashes a smile, knowing his reverse surprise was a success. “It was actually Jeonghan’s idea…except you know he’s in Brazil for vacation so he said” he pauses, to add air quotations with his fingers, “—and I quote—‘one of your frat boys will do as a substitute’.”
Chan, Soonyoung, and you all laugh at Mingyu’s journey to this surprise, knowing Jeonghan would absolutely be the one to come up with this. You and Chan both sit down in the booth again, making room for your two friends. Waving down the server, Soonyoung orders kimchi fried rice with fried egg on top and Mingyu, much to your and Chan’s displeasure, settles on stealing food from the three of you. As you and Chan try your best to quickly recap your morning, Soonyoung finally addresses the elephant in the room and asks the question you all knew would open Mingyu’s pandora box.
“So, how was New York?”

✧ soonyoung: rising fourth year and rush chair in heng:garae fraternity, meaning he’s responsible for recruiting new members and looking at their applications. social butterfly only when it comes to promoting the frat, otherwise he’s too shy to hold a long conversation with strangers. good friends with y/n since they come over to the house all the time to hang out with mingyu…at least that’s how y/n thought they became close. reality: soonyoung is a part of chan’s dance team and saw y/n at auditions. oh, and he’s had a crush on them for two years now. occasionally hangs out with y/n when mingyu isn’t around, watching dumb cartoons or gaming, but tries his best to act nonchalant when he’s with them since he knows how serious mingyu can get.
✧ seungkwan: rising third year and no.1 gossip-knower of heng:garae. the most active on social media and in the group chat. soonyoung somehow roped him into this fraternity situation, but he ended up liking it more than he cares to admit. makes the guys watch and read materials related to feminism, environmental awareness, and other social issues to make sure they aren’t grouped with the usual frat boy stereotypes.
✧ seokmin: vice president of heng:garae fraternity, will become the president once mingyu steps down. in the same year of school as soonyoung since he took a leave of absence. not very tech-savvy, mainly posts to show workout progress. oblivious to how popular he is, turns down a lot of attempts to ask him out.
extras: wonwoo and minghao are soonyoung's closest friends but REFUSE to participate in any frat shenanigans, so you will see them in the replies and chats and such but not actually at functions or the house.
✧ y/n: a little too invested in the love lives of their friends (to cover for the fact that they were hurt by their most recent ex). ironically also offers relationship advice through a column with the school newspaper. also used to be in charge of the student radio station, always looking for good music and interacting with listeners. graduating this year with a degree in digital marketing, but still waiting to hear back from jobs they applied to and running an online thrift store in the meantime. trying to have a HOT summer, but chan and mingyu keep interfering. way to their heart: pompompurin and pudding.
✧ chan: y/n’s roommate and past lab partner in high school chemistry. huge presence on campus as a coordinator for the student radio station and student dance team. even though he’s well-known on campus, he’s only going into his second year. most responsible one of the friend group and always trying his best to keep y/n and jeonghan out of trouble. also the youngest of the bunch.
✧ mingyu: childhood friend of y/n’s and allows only them to call him gyu. he's basically their brother, very protective of y/n but also keeps it real with them. president of heng:garae fraternity until the new class comes in, but not coping with graduating well </3 the guys are not coping with the fact that they won’t have him as their chef in a few months either </3
✧ jeonghan: became a part of the friend group by sliding in mingyu’s dms for a collab. encourages y/n’s HOT summer agenda. hardest person to track down, one day you’re sharing chicken with him, the next you text him and he’s somehow in france? never was into higher education, but he’s a popular influencer...so he doesn’t need that degree to make bank.

“this is never going to get done.” you sigh, reaching for the next pile of paperwork your supervisor assigned for you to finish before the weekend ended.
your boyfriend, wonwoo, was on the other side of the phone, facetiming you. he paused his game, keeping his cat ear headphones on as you could hear him shuffle around his hotel room. after some more ruckus, he bent down to look at you through his phone again, quickly running a hand through his still damp hair.
your hand was suspended above the paper in front of you, unable to write, not knowing what he was up to. amused, you try your best to hold back a small smile but fail miserably. as he notices your smile, he returns the expression, before adjusting his phone so you could see the floor. your view was his open suitcase as he wordlessly climbed into it.
“are you that homesick, wonwoo?”
“i’m lovesick, y/n. i think i need to come home and get treated by you.” he calmly informs you, not moving from the suitcase.
“and you’re not just saying that so you can come encourage me from up close?”
he clears his throat, feeling awkward and unable to refute your deduction on his other motives. closing his suitcase again, he grabbed his phone and flopped onto the bed.
“two more weeks and i’ll be able to cuddle with you again, two more weeks and i can eat your cooking again, two more weeks-”
you interrupt his speech, shaking your head, “two more weeks until i suddenly have a distraction-filled home again.”
“and that’s a bad thing?” his genuine surprise threw you off-guard.
“we both know it’s not.”
he takes his glasses off, placing them on the nightstand. smiling warmly as you yawned for the nth time of the night, he replies softly, “yeah, i just wanted to hear you say it.”
anon → "could you do ot13 with an idol s/o who’s had dating rumours with another idol/member (/ω\) big jealousy potential"
‧₊˚✩彡 includes: f!idol reader, mentions of other idols/groups, established relationship, jealousy & sulking 😋, pet names, a kms-adjacent joke (junhui). [short] headcanons under the cut.
🌀 headcanons .ᐟ
seungcheol used to be a lot worse in dealing with your dating rumors. a lot worse. the man would be unbearably sulky for days, but he's since moved on to accept that this is part and parcel with the job. nowadays, he still feels a small itch to be dramatic— but at least he does it with your consent. expect him to rival a kdrama lead with all his lines.
jeonghan gets annoyed. of course he does. he's just prideful enough to feel a little off-put by the rumors, especially how you might've played a role in it. he's learned how to cope, though, through the likes of long-winded video essays and multi-part instagram reels. catch him on his burner twitter account, fighting people over their misconceptions about you. (bonus: he's a one-man team who insists you would look good with "the most handsome member of svt, yoon jeonghan.")
joshua's just chronically offline enough to miss the fact that there are any rumors at all. if he's not hearing it from you, he'll be catching wind of it from the boys who show a little bit of concern. but joshua's the first to giggle at all the ludicrous claims because he just thinks they're all so stupid, honestly. his favorite pastime is dissecting and discussing it with you over a meal, where he makes it his personal mission to have you laughing it off by the end of the night.
junhui thinks he's going to die. no, really. for someone who has gotten into dating rumors himself— co-actresses in dramas, you know how it is— he sure doesn't know how to function when it's you that's in the news. he pouts. he whines. he threatens to blow up the headquarters of every single korean gossip site. it will take him a few days to get over it, and even then, he'll narrow his eyes at any mention of your supposed-boyfriend.
soonyoung will try to play up the jealous act. it's a short-lived thing; he's possessive and territorial when it matters, but not over baseless rumors. he finds it easier to jump on your nerves some other ways— like warning you that he may just be snatched away. "can't blame you if you're in love with lee sangyeon," he'll say with a fake, dreamy sigh, just to annoy you. "i think i am now, too."
cool, cool, cool, cool, cool. there's a litany of that in wonwoo's head. an attempt for him to stay sane about these types of things. on the surface, he's nonchalant. at most, he might look a little miffed. but you know him well, and you know that he's the type who will need a lot a little of affirmation because he's always just a little bit on edge at the prospect of losing you. he'll be good as new after an uninterrupted cuddle session.
jihoon's reaction to rumors such as there are relatively predictable. half an eye roll, a sound like a scoff. he's always made it clear, his distaste for gossip-mongers and the like. he keeps everything on the down low— except his feelings for you— so he has no respect for bullshit articles. besides, his heart is in your hands. which is to say: he has full trust that you would let him know if anything about your feelings might change.
seokmin is one bad day away from making good on his threat of breaking your dating news himself. he'll plant information if he has to! he's just a notch below junhui and mingyu when it comes to kicking up a fuss about the rumors. seokmin is easier to appease— a kiss or two here, a couple of sweet words there— but he's also the first to find out any news involving your name. (he'll never tell you, but he has google search notifications toggled for you.)
'a big baby', you call him, and mingyu would rather die than admit you're right. the man talks like the world is ending any time you're remotely linked to someone that's not him. he's the one you'd have to chase after the most. he'll keep his arms crossed over his chest as he grumbles about 'your other men'. he's never been happy about sharing, and he makes it abundantly clear that includes you.
minghao's chief concern, unsurprisingly, will be how you're doing. how have the rumors affected you? do you need anything to get you buy? everything— the boys' comments, his own feelings— fade into background noise as he focuses on your welfare. he's the picture of composure and self-assurance when it comes to your relationship; you've never given him a reason to doubt your loyalty, so why should he?
it's just like seungkwan to go straight to the source— and, no, he's not talking about you. whoever you might be linked to, he's already sliding into their messages to get the 'scoop'. there's a little bit of manipulation here, in how seungkwan will very 'casually' drop that the two of you are actually seeing each other. if this is his roundabout way of staking claim, then so be it.
vernon's nonchalance can be a little bit terrifying sometimes. these are such instances when you're reminded that he's relatively comfortable in your relationship, enough to ask point blank if the rumors are true. this isn't to be mistaken for him being uncaring. there's still a slight twitch in his jaw, a downturn of his lip when some third party is mentioned. at the end of it all, though? he's quick to shrug it off, because the faith he has in you beats out any stupid rumor.
chan has been working overtime to get the two of you in the headlines. he's matched your phone case! he's shared your music on vlive! and yet, he still isn't your supposed boyfriend, according to dispatch? that's what he's the most upset about, really. that his not-so subtle hints have gone largely unnoticed. chan wants to be loud and obvious about his love for you; he's just waiting for the perfect time to drop that bomb.
@hopeless-foolery → "how would the members react to you cutely drunk texting them?"
⌗ ┆i too would be drunk texting svt about how much i adore them... ⁽⁽ଘ( ˊωˋ )ଓ⁾⁾
‧₊˚✩彡 includes: drunk!reader (mentions of alcohol), intentional typos, established relationship, pet names, fluff!!! yipee, slight crack, cussing, [short] headcanons under the cut.
🍻 headcanons .ᐟ
— would make fun of you ✩ jeonghan, junhui, soonyoung, mingyu, seungkwan.
svt have had their fair share of seeing each other drunk, so it should come as little/no surprise that they've got a little bit of a teasing streak when it comes to a drunk you. soonyoung beats them all out by a mile in the sense that he will demand to be drinking with you. he can't have you being the only one having all the fun! if he can, he'll roll up and drink with you until you're both drunkenly blabbering to each other.
mingyu uses the opportunity to ask drunk you a bunch of the silliest questions. he'll be very serious as he tries to get you to answer the perilla leaf debate, for instance, because he thinks you're most likely to be a little more honest (and very cute) when you've got a little bit of alcohol in you.
as for jeonghan, his exploitation is a lot more light hearted; he's quick to seize the chance to fish for compliments. he thinks it's amusing, how you'll get all flustered in the morning. "no take backs!" he'll claim as he basks in all your sweet words. junhui is similar in the sense that he's already taken dozens of screenshots of your drunk texts. as leverage, of course, but also for him to look back on a rainy day. one of his favorite things is finding ways to surprise you when you're drunk, because he knows you'll get emotional over a random call— or, if he can manage, a surprise visit.
seungkwan teeters the line of making fun/taking care, though he often does start with an exasperated kind of joking. ultimately, he'll never be able to resist the urge to make sure you're okay. (think: the famous instance of seungkwan taking care of a drunk wonwoo.) he'll dish out all his jokes before going to find you and make sure you're all good.
— would take care of you ✩ seungcheol, joshua, seokmin, minghao, vernon.
seungcheol would be the caretaker. the moment he gets those drunk texts, he's already gearing up to take you home. he's the gentle hand at the small of your back, keeping you steady. best believe that he already has everything you need in his car's glove compartment. he loves your drunk texts, sure, but he loves looking after you so much more.
vernon's more of a the-day-after type of care. he'll show up at your doorstep with a small smirk, teasing something along the lines of "you went hard again, huh?" but he also has aspirin, gatorade, takeout soup. you name it. he won't mention your sappy drunk texts, though he's also secretly taken screenshots just in case you take it back.
joshua, seokmin, and minghao all have that similar instinct to make sure you're okay, no matter how happy they might be to see your cute messages. joshua will indulge your drunken babbles while 'subtly' trying you to care for yourself. if necessary, he'll coax you over video call to drink less, using the most honeyed voice ever to get you to cave.
conversely, seokmin will stay up until you get home. he prefers being able to pick you up, sure, but when he can't? he'll battle off his drowsiness and will only crash when he gets that 'i'm home' text. minghao, no matter what time you catch him, will be on his feet at any sign of you having drunk one too many. it's the way he loves, after all— to love is to be burdened, but to not think of it that way.
— would be endeared by you ✩ wonwoo, jihoon, chan.
wonwoo may be a little confused, but he's got the spirit! he'll probably sigh to himself when he sees your drunken rambles. (although, if you squint, there's a hint of a fond smile on his face. a warm gleam in his eyes.) he'll let you have your fun and will occasionally shoot you well-meaning reminders, all the while keeping your words in the back of his mind.
jihoon would take your words seriously. he's the kind who believe that alcohol can lower inhibitions, can incite sincerity, so he'll be more than a little overwhelmed with your sheer affection. the mere thought of you wanting to take it back would make his heart lurch. like seokmin, he's the text-me-when-you're-home type, except he stays awake for much longer just contemplating your texts and how they make him feel.
and chan will try to tease, will attempt to be like his hyungs— prompting compliments, fishing for praise— but when the words sink in? when he realizes that you actually might mean what you're saying? he's so far gone, it's not even funny. he'd do anything to hear more of it. (preferably in person, which is why he's rushing to where you are asap.)

“I swear,” you sigh to your friends, “life’s got to be better on Saturn.”
Between the messy situationships you got trapped in and the endless amount of male celebrities that got involved in scandals, you realized one thing. Well, you knew it a long time ago, it’s just been re-emphasized as of late. Men aren’t shit!
Valentine’s Day weekend came and went, with you successfully continuing your man-detox.
Your form of treating yourself on the Sunday after was grabbing boba with your friends. Jasmine tea with herbal jelly always healed you, and after the crappy week you had you were ready to recharge. Some sweet treats to go along with the drinks were an obvious choice as well, including the cafe’s famous egg tarts.
“Boys are from Mars, blah blah. You say all that but haven’t you been looking towards the kitchen since we sat down…” your friend Yeri observed, causing you to snap your head in her direction.
“Okay, but he is uncharacteristically hot for our town, right?” You frown, looking back at the man who hadn’t yet noticed your burning gaze.
A cafe recently opened downtown and you wanted to check it out ever since their TikToks worked their way into your algorithm. Who could turn down cronuts (croissant donuts) with fillings sounding as yummy as ube pandan, black sesame oreo, and dark chocolate rose? You ordered roughly fifteen minutes ago, but knew you were going to have to wait due to the amount of people in the store. What you didn’t expect was for the baker to be so attractive. Sure, the baristas and other staff are also very attractive, but something about the baker and his arms being so muscular made you lose focus. Not only that, he somehow managed to be so attuned to his work that he was oblivious to the amount of people drawn to him. He has to be from out of town, you think to yourself.
You finally shifted your gaze from the poor man just doing his job as he kneaded more dough, turning back to your friends. Your childhood friend, Wonwoo, was still stuck on the barista who greeted y’all. Yeri scuffed at the two of you, unable to believe her friends’ lack of self control.
“Some detoxes aren’t meant to be completed.” Wonwoo shrugs, getting up from his seat after hearing his name called by the barista who took your names earlier, Chan. He seemed similar to your ages, definitely the youngest of the people working at the cafe. He was definitely the type Wonwoo went for. Wonwoo flashed a bright smile, shifting his weight to lean closer to Chan. As he handed his phone to him, your friend and you rolled your eyes at his predictability. And then there were two…
The three of you had sworn off men for the entire month, a feat that would usually be completely achievable. Yet, after finishing your boba you were wavering ever so slightly. The mystery man continues his work, now sporting some flour on his face. Certainly that was an accident, but it only made him look hotter than before. After another five minutes Wonwoo’s and Yeri’s cronuts came out and you stared at your plate where only crumbs remained. Ordering another dessert to share isn’t the worst idea, you nod to yourself, eyes glued to the giant fruit tart in the display case. You ask your friends if they’d be down to share and they agree instantly. Almost too eager. You push your chair from the table, heading towards the counter to order. You turn back to Wonwoo and Yeri, wanting to confirm the order but see them giving you thumbs up and winking. Your face twists into confusion, before turning back as the hot baker walks to the cash register to take your order. You need to get out of this cafe.
Avoiding the cafe proved to be much harder than anticipated. The night you first visited you brought home some egg tarts, happy to share with your loved ones. Little did you expect that your entire household would fall in love with the tarts as well. You became the assigned tart buyer, stopping by the cafe to grab a four-pack nearly every day. A four-pack only cost $6, something that was unheard of in this economy. Besides the inexpensive tarts, frequenting the cafe so much did have its perks. One, for example, was that you were fast in filling up the punch card and now were two visits from a free drink. Another, coincidentally, was interacting more with the cafe’s baker, whose name you learned is Seungcheol.
“Did you see we’re supposed to get more snow next weekend?” He attempts to make small talk, grabbing the tarts for you and packing them away.
You hum a ‘mhm’ before reaching into your bag for your wallet. You were attempting to distance yourself from him, to let a crush die out as a crush, but he made it more difficult each time with his efforts in small talk. Why did his voice have to be so nice to hear?
“You’re good, Y/N, it’s on the house.” The familiar angelic voice interrupts your thoughts.
You felt your face heat up as you heard him say your name. You shake your hands fervently, “No, it’s okay I can pay.”
“I know you can, but at this point I think you’re the number one customer for these tarts. Are they that good?”
Your brows furrow at his question, “Are you kidding me? They’re so delicious, I mean the custard filling itself is not too sweet but still has a hint of vanilla in it and I taste the smallest amount of… almond?”
“Yes! That’s my secret, it’s like a few drops to each batter, but I didn’t know others could taste the difference as well.”
“It definitely makes a difference! Not to mention the crust is absolute perfection, it’s sturdy enough to last multiple bites but still soft to bite down on…” You trail off, becoming self-conscious of your food ramblings.
Seungcheol doesn’t notice your inner turmoil, but his eyes light up at your words. “You’re so much better than Chan or Mingyu when it comes to expressing your thoughts on the food! I will spend hours working on a new recipe for them to take one bite and say, ‘it’s tasty, Cheol’. It drives me insane!”
You nod, surprised by his extroverted personality. Unable to match the energy on this Wednesday morning, you do your best and manage to give him a faint smile before grabbing the bag that sat on the counter.
“Well, thank you for the free tarts, Cheol.” You hold up the bag, before leaving the shop.
“Anytime!”
As the bells at the top corner of the door rang out, Seungcheol watched your figure walk away from the cafe. He let out the breath he had been holding, placing his hand on the countertop. With his free hand, he grabs his half full cup of coffee, taking sips to cool down. Anytime? Wait did you just say Cheol?
“He’s single, you know?” Chan raised his eyebrows your way, as he whispered Seungcheol’s dating status for the table to hear. Chan’s shift ended thirty minutes ago and he and Wonwoo were already extremely cozy and used to each other’s presence. Wonwoo would not stop blowing up the group chat to give every update to their relationship as the days went on from the fateful first day y’all visited the cafe.
“It’s still February, you know?” You retort, eyes still glued to the baker.
“Yeah, yeah,” Yeri dismisses you.
She knew it was only a matter of time for the two of you to get together. Chan made a separate group chat excluding you to devise a plan to get the two of you together. He revealed Seungcheol would check the door each time a customer came in, then look dejected each time it wasn’t you. Not to mention, he usually only worked one or two days of the week, but his hours increased in hopes of seeing you again. Long story short: neither of you were making the first move and it was driving everyone insane.
A familiar melody played through the cafe’s speaker’s, causing your ears to perk up. wave to earth? Your favorite band, the band whose concert is ingrained in your bones, wave to earth? Taking a picture of your uneaten egg tart, you vowed to upload a story with wave to earth as the background music when you got home. You continued the conversation with your friends, reducing the glances Seungcheol’s way to a minimum of once every five minutes.
Around two hours passed, most customers cleared out leaving just your table and Seungcheol in the cafe. Your friends convinced you to talk to him once again. Before you could say anything, Seungcheol began the conversation.
“Sorry. I, uh, noticed how excited you were when wave to earth’s music came on. The playlist that was playing all night was mine and I loved seeing your reactions to the music. I’m careful in asking this, but would you want to grab a meal sometime? You know, outside of this cafe and all.”
Your eyes softened as your body slowly let go of the tension you were unaware that you had.
“I really enjoy running into you, Seungcheol. But, I am doing this ‘man detox’ where I’m trying not to be with anyone in February. I fall for people too easily and hopefully things will change.” You confess, grabbing your straw’s wrapper and throwing it in the waste bin on his left.
You wished he would go over this moment quickly, not wanting to fight his temptation and your true feelings for much longer. Sipping on your drink, you try your best to act nonchalant despite the butterflies in your stomach.
“I don’t think you can fall for people too easily, it just means you love people sincerely. And that’s not anything that needs to be fixed.” He counters, jogging back behind the counter at the sound of the oven’s timer.
You see Wonwoo, Chan, and Yeri walk out of the cafe, content with you finally having a long conversation with Seungcheol. Before you could reply, he continued speaking.
“The bit about swearing men off for a whole month I understand. Lucky for me tomorrow’s the first day of March though.” He slyly informs, not breaking eye contact as he puts the hot pastries on the cooling rack.
You scrambled to find your phone buried in the bottom of your bag. Once you finally fished it out, you checked and double-checked the date…February 28th. Why are the days going by quicker and quicker?
“I didn’t mean to make you so flustered when I thought about asking you out, we can pretend this never happen-”
“No!” You surprise the two of you from your increased volume.
Seungcheol chuckles before grabbing the ingredients to make frosting for tomorrow’s desserts. “Good, then how does next weekend work? I have a workshop to attend so I won’t be at the cafe for this next week. If you think it over and decide you don’t want to go, no worries. We can go back to a regular customer and baker relationship. If you do want to go out with me, here’s my number.” He explains, wiping his hands on his apron before grabbing a pen and writing his number on a blank punch card.
“O-Okay, let me think about it,” you muster out. Tucking the card with Cheol’s number written on it in your pocket, you left the cafe. Confused was an understatement.
You returned home and placed the tarts on the kitchen table before heading to your room. As you got ready for bed, you grabbed the punch card from your coat pocket. As if your hands had a mind of their own, his number was added to your contacts before you had time to think. Throwing yourself on your bed as you looked at his contact, you couldn’t help but feel giddy for next weekend. Tomorrow was the start of March after all.
“So, you don’t just work at the cafe then.” You look around in amazement at the ceramic studio you were standing in, unable to imagine him as anything else than a baker. Now his muscular arms were making more sense.
“No, not at all. I only help out there since Mingyu is on vacation visiting his family. Oh, Mingyu is the shop owner by the way. But, if you look under any of the plates at the cafe, they have my initials on them.”
“Wait, so why are you such a good baker?”
“Lots of part-time jobs to support my family. You pick up a few things here and there.” He explains, grabbing a collection of ceramics for you to choose from.
Seungcheol treated you to lunch and the conversation flowed like the two of you knew each other for years. The date was going well, suspiciously well. But you tried to withhold your default thinking, wanting to believe in whatever connection the two of you had.
“Would you like to try to make anything? A flower vase? A plate? A mug? It will take a while to get back to you since I share my kiln with another studio member, but I can expedite it.” He informs you, showing the different models of ceramics you could make.
You look at your options, unable to decide as they all looked cute.
After thinking for a while, you break the silence, “I do love flowers…” You decidedly point at the vase.
“Flower vase it is.” He nods, sitting down and throwing clay onto the wheel before shifting and letting you take over.
You could’ve sworn there was some reluctance in his movements. But once you looked back up at him, he moved his hands over yours to help you mold the vase into the shape you wanted.
The two of you spent over an hour in the studio. Seungcheol was a good teacher, not getting frustrated at your mistakes, even though you knew he could sense your embarrassment. He’s kind. Realizing the sun was setting, he did the finishing touches on the vase, before running into a back room, telling you he had something to give you.
As he left you alone for the moment, you looked outside to notice small white flakes falling from the sky. After admiring the view for a moment, his footsteps enter the room again, now he appeared with both of his hands behind his back.
“Choose a hand.”
You gesture to his left, to which he reveals a white rose. Seungcheol holds it out to you and you promptly wrap your fingers around the stem.
You tilt your head trying to see what else he was hiding, “What about the other hand?”
He holds out another white rose, before looking outside and also noticing the snow. “Shoot,” he murmured under his breath before grabbing his messenger bag from the worktable.
“It should be okay, the snow doesn’t look too heavy just yet,” You comfort him. Your eyes stay fixated on the flowers you’re holding, gently bringing them up to your face to smell them.
His voice calls for your attention, “Y/N.”
As you look up to him, you feel shy once again as he puts the scarf around your neck. Instantly, you feel warm. Although, you are unsure if it was due to the scarf or the actions of the man in front of you.
“It’s getting late, may I walk you home?” He asks, already putting his coat on and preparing for the cold.
You look at him with surprise, not used to men with actual manners. You put your coat on as well, walking through the studio’s doors as he held it open.
“That’s really sweet of you. If you do that though, I will never hear the end of it. Suddenly you’ll become my boyfriend and we’ll need to start planning our wedding out-”
“Our wedding, huh?” He smirks, holding his arm out for you to lean on as the sidewalk the two of you walked on became covered in ice.
“I did not mean to say that part out loud.” You purse your lips together, mentally hitting yourself for unnecessarily rambling.
“Let me at least walk you to the traffic lights then.”
“Deal.”
The lights came far too quick, and you found yourself disappointed by the lack of distance between your house and the intersection. There were barely any cars outside. Everyone must be at home preparing for the weather, you thought to yourself. Soon enough, the two of you reached your agreed destination. Yet, you found it hard to let go of his arm.
“Are you sure I can’t walk you home?” He softly offers again.
“It’s truly okay! My house is not even a ten minute walk from here.”
He squints his eyes, slightly skeptical. “Then text me when you get home safe, okay?”
“Okay, I can do that! Thank you for everything today Cheol, I had an amazing time.”
“Me too, Y/N.”
The crosswalk light turns white, indicating you could walk. You wave goodbye, crossing before realizing you were still wearing his scarf. He was still watching you from the other side as the light began to flicker.
“What should I do with your scarf?” You cup your hands around your mouth to project your voice.
He grins big before mirroring you, “Just give it to me on our next date!”
