Exhaust all other options first. Google to see if there are any mobile crisis units in the area. These are run by counselors. Otherwise, get in touch with someone who can drive them to the hospital, if hospitalization is needed. Parental trouble is better than getting arrested or shot, so if you gotta tell parents who won’t make it worse, go for it. If you can’t do that, try a hotline and see if they can direct you to another local non-police option. If you exhaust every option and can only call 9-1-1, specifically request a crisis intervention team and give as much detail about the situation as possible. They’re still cops, but trained more than the average pig. Ask if you can get an ambulance sent over instead.

I recommend finding your nearest mobile crisis team’s number now, and if you have a friend who’s at high risk of suicide, the number for the nearest team to wherever they live.
