Presented by Peugeot at the Paris motor show in 1984, the Quasar was a futuristic sports car concept inspired by science-fiction spacecraft design. It took its 600hp 1.6-litre biturbo engine from the 205 rally car, with the motor and four-wheel-drive transmission visible at the rear of the car. 

The BMW Karmann Asso di Quadri was commissioned in 1976 from Italdesign by the German coachbuilder Karmann based on the E21 as a proposal to BMW for a coupé based on the first-generation 3-series. It was part of the Italdesign Aces series. However, BMW wasn’t interested in pursuing the project, so Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Ace of Diamonds remained a one-off. Though the car went no further, the unique wheel design caught the attention of the Japanese wheel manufacturer Melber, who licensed the design and put them into production.

Giorgetto Giugiaro had designed Isuzu’s 117 Coupé while he was working at Ghia in 1966, and so Italdesign’s Isuzu Asso di Fiori concept continued Isuzu’s line of Giugiaro-designed coupés. Presented at the 1979 Geneva Motor Show, it was the only version of Italdesign’s Aces series to make it into production, as the Piazza (marketed in the US as the Isuzu Impulse) 

Bertone’s relationship with Citroën had begun in 1972 with the GS Camargue concept and continued with the BX. Their Citroën Zabrus concept was designed by Marc Deschamps based on the Citroën BX 4TC rally car and was presented 40 years ago at the Turin Motor Show. A futuristic shooting brake with scissor doors, the Zabrus was a fully operational prototype with a top speed of 222 km/h (138 mph).

After Giotto Bizzarrini failed to make an impression on the Le Mans 24 Hours race with his P538 and a rule change rendered the car obsolete, he sold a tubular steel chassis complete with a 327ci Chevrolet V8 to his friend Giorgetto Giugiaro. Thus, the Bizzarrini Manta became Italdesign’s first concept when it was presented at the 1968 Turin Motor Show. The ultra-low wedge profile featured a 15º front windshield rake with an overall height of 1.05 metres (41.5 inches). The driver sat in the centre of the car with a passenger on each side. 

Immaculate Audi ur quattro. Not a faithful restoration, but tailored to the owner's taste, it features a modified 20v engine developing 280hp, BBS RS wheels and a coat of Stone Grey Metallic paintwork.

Only available as a 3 door Hatchback. The Abarth extras consisted of cosmetic changes only, a frontal apron with fitted fog lights, rear apron, side skirts and a rear spoiler with third brake light. There was also a set of 13 inch Speedline five spoke alloy wheels. Unlike true Abarth models there were no factory engine upgrades and the Abarth parts were added at the time of sale. By the mid-1960s, Volkswagen was getting desperate to replace the Beetle. In 1966, Porsche was awarded the contract to come up with the new volume seller, and the EA266 was their proposal. It would have a range (1.0-1.6 litre) of in-line engines mounted longitudinally ahead of the rear axle, below the rear passenger’s seat. The project progressed to the point where 50 prototypes were built; in 1969, it was signed off for production, and the mid-engined configuration was to be the basis for a whole new range of VWs. There were many issues, however: the cars overheated, wet road handling was tricky, and access for maintenance was difficult. When Rudolf Leiding took over as CEO of Volkswagen in 1971, he moved quickly to cancel the project despite over €300 being spent and destroy all bar a few of the prototypes. 

In 1981 Luigi Colani used a Citroën 2CV to set a fuel economy world record, thanks to his highly aerodynamic, lightweight bodywork, using 1.7 litres of fuel to travel 100 km (approximately 166 mpg).

Zagato proposed an update to their Flavia Sport in 1967 with the Lancia Flavia Super Sport, using a shorter wheelbase and a more powerful 1.8-litre flat-four engine, designed by Ercole Spada. In 1968, a second prototype was presented at the Turin auto show with a 2.0-litre upgrade, but Lancia was in critical financial and organisational difficulties, so the Super Sport was doomed. In October 1969, Fiat took over Lancia and had no interest in pursuing Zagato’s Flavia project. 

The Alfa Romeo Delfino was a  grand touring coupé concept based on the Alfa 6. Designed by Marc Deschamps at Bertone, it was presented at the 1983 Geneva Motor Show.
