“And if you’ll give me 40% of the MOST POPULAR VOTE, I’ll give you my SPECIAL REWARD... A year’s supply of NON-GLOOBY SLIME!!! Never or BARELY used!!!” Tenna concluded his speech with a huge smile, jetting his hands up in double peace signs.
The crowd roared in confused enthusiasm as Tenna gave a gracious flurry of low-FPS bows, pausing only for the occasional stink-nose at his audience plants who weren’t throwing enough 3D roses.
Eventually, the room fell silent. It was Senshi’s turn to speak.
He puffed out his chest, took a long, sweeping look over the audience… and shook his head.
“I can see not all of you are eating properly.”
The crowd murmured with embarrassment.
“I don’t know who needs to hear this, but it’s time to take the turkey out of your icebox. I have seen the ingenious technology with which your people store food... and I have also seen the waste which results from such convenience.
“The food you take had a life. Beasts grew fat on the grass of the field, plants grew from the sun’s rays, and mushrooms grew from minerals in the cracks of caves. And yet, it sits in your iceboxes, collecting moisture until it perishes.
“Eat what is given to you. Because its life will make you stronger, too.”
Without another word, Senshi left his podium and stepped away from the stage. The crowd murmured in confusion. “Is he really like that?” somebody said. “I only remember reblogging the photosets of him tripping and showing ass.”
--
Back in the Green Room, Tenna wrung his antennas nervously.
“Y-y-you think they liked me!? They HAD to!! I mean, I don’t know what Asgore was thinking, getting that weird haircut and running that food waste campaign, but… YOU thought I did good, didn’t you, Kris?”
Laios nodded aggressively, a streak of blue face paint peeling from his forehead.
“You did AMAZING, Tenna! By the way, now that we’ve seen all your insider campaign secrets, do you have any more videos of Susie? Especially her tail... If I could get a look at that, I could finally tell if she’s a dinosaur or --”
THWACK. Fake antlers butted Laios’s head.
“LAIOS?? Weren’t we dressed up to help SENSHI???” Marcille hissed, gesturing awkwardly with her hooves.
Suddenly, Tenna turned to the two adventurers.
“Hey, WAIT a second. SOMETHING’s not right here...”
Laios and Marcille held their breath.
“Where the heck are my POINTS!?”
Just then, the door opened. Chilchuck took one step into the room, whistling and holding a large bag.
Everyone turned to him.
Chilchuck paused, took a step backwards, and closed the door.
“CHILCHUCK!!!” yelled Tenna.
“How come Chilchuck got to stay Chilchuck!?” yelled Marcille at the same time.
--
Meanwhile, in outer space somewhere, some guy was making out with a rock.
Childe is the youngest of the Fatui harbingers, a man who's personable on the surface and very comfortable using violence when it suits him. The game introduces him with enough charm, humour, and apparent openness that it's very easy to read him first as the Fun Harbinger, especially compared to the colder or more visibly sinister members of the Fatui. That surface is real, but it's only one layer of him.
A lot of his role in the story comes from the tension between sincerity and danger. Childe is one of the few antagonistic figures in the game who can sound genuinely straightforward while still being deeply threatening. He enjoys combat, enjoys testing people, and is willing to use enormous violence if it serves the Tsaritsa's goals or gives him the fight he wants. The Liyue arc makes that very clear; he's personable, funny, and easy to talk to right up until he's willing to unleash Osial and force a catastrophe to get what he came for.
His backstory gives that behaviour a stronger shape than Battle Maniac on its own. When he was fourteen, he fell into the Abyss, came back changed, and was later taken to the Fatui by his father because his violence had already become difficult to contain. That history places combat-hunger, instability, and a taste for danger very early in his life, long before the player meets him as a Harbinger. The Fatui didn't create those traits from nothing - they just gave them purpose, rank, and scale.
He also sits in a very specific moral position inside the broader cast; Childe isn't a secret soft boy whose violence is all misunderstood, but he's not a pure monster either. The game keeps insisting on both his brutality and his capacity for very real attachment. He can lie, manipulate, and endanger a whole nation, then turn around and be genuinely tender with his younger siblings in a way that doesn't feel fake, and that split is central to how he works. He's selfish, destructive, and often exhilerated by the wrong things, but he isn't emotionally hollow.
Psychology
Childe comes across as someone who's built his whole inner life around intensity. Peace doesn't seem to settle him, and safety doesn't seem to interest him for very long. He sounds most alive when he's testing himself, seeking stronger opponents, or moving toward situations that feel dangerous enough to wake something in him. He craves worthy battles, follows excitement, and treats combat as something close to fulfillment rather than mere duty.
His appetite for danger sits beside a strong streak of compartmentalisation. Childe can move from deadly serious violence to easy charm very quickly, and he seems quite practised at keeping different parts of himself in separate rooms. The Harbinger who'll help trigger a national crisis is also the older brother writing warm, almost old-fashioned letters home and building an entire fake version of his work life so Teucer doesn't know the truth about his job. He doesn't seem confused by that split, he lives inside it comfortably.
A lot of his selfishness comes from how completely he prioritises his own values over wider moral consequence. He does have values: strength, family, honesty in combat, keeping promises, and pursuing what excites him. The problem is that those values are narrow and very personally arranged; other people's safety matters far less to him than his own commitments and desires, which leaves him with a kind of selective sincerity that can look almost admirable in one context and appalling in another.
There's also a strong obsessive quality to the way he relates to power and to figures he sees as exceptional. Skirk leaves a huge mark on him because she's bound up with the Abyss and with his formative experience of combat at its most overwhelming. The Traveler interests him for a similar reason: they're powerful, unusual, and worth measuring himself against. Even his relationship with Zhongli has that edge of fascinated respect after Liyue. Childe is drawn to people who embody strength, mystery, or a larger world than the one he's already in. He doesn't respond to them passively; he wants contact, conflict, and proof that he can keep up.
Strengths and Flaws
One of Childe's clearest strengths is courage. He doesn't flinch easily, doesn't lose himself in indecision, and is very willing to move first into dangerous situation, which makes him formidable in combat and socially difficult to intimidate. He can handle uncertainty better than most characters because uncertainty often feels like an invitation rather than a threat to him.
He's also highly disciplined when it comes to the things he actually cares about. Beneath the playful surface, he's meticulous, responsible, and serious about promises - he isn't reckless in the sense of being sloppy. He takes training seriously, treats battle seriously, and seems to hold himself to a very high standard in the areas he values.
Another strength is that his loyalty, once engaged, is very real, which shows up most clearly with his family. The Teucer story quest makes it obvious that Childe is willing to go to absurd lengths to protect his younger brother's image of him and keep him safe, even while juggling danger, lies, and the consequences of his own station. His letters to Tonia show the same thing in a quieter register; the warmth there isn't performative.
His flaws are severe. The biggest one is that he treats violence much too lightly; he enjoys it, is proud of being good at it, and is willing to let enormous collateral damage become somebody else's problem if the larger objective or the fight itself still appeals to him. Liyue is the clearest example - whatever justifications he gives, he's still willing to put countless lives at risk for the Tsaritsa's goal.
He's also highly self-justifying. Childe likes to frame himself as straightforward, honourable, or simply doing his duty, but the game keeps showing how selective that honour really is. He can be honest in a narrow, personal sense while still participating in deception, coercion, and political violence on a huge scale. He often talks as if private sincerity should outweight public harm, and it doesn't.
A third flaw is that he's drawn to obsession. Once somethign or someone captures his interest, moderation drops away quickly. He gets fixated on battle, strong opponents, the identities he wants to maintain with his siblings, and proving himself in situations where stepping back would be healthier and more reasonable. That makes him exciting to watch but also very difficult for anyone around him to rely on in an ordinary, stable way.
Relationships
TEUCER
Teucer brings out his protective side in its purest form. Around Teucer, Childe becomes patient, inventive, and almost absurdly determined to preserve a heroic older-brother image. The whole story quest depends on that - Childe would rather construct an elaborate lie about toy research than let Teucer see the real shape of his life, which says a great deal about him. His tenderness is real, but it's tangled up with performance and control even here.
THE TRAVELER
The Traveler interests Childe partly because they're useful and partly because they're strong. Their relationship never settles into clean friendship or clean rivalry - Childe enjoys fighting them, respects their ability, and seems genuinely energised by having someone in front of him who can keep up; at the same time, Liyue makes it clear that he'll still turn on them the second they stand between him and what he wants. That combination of respect, excitement, and willingness to escalate is very typical of him.
SKIRK
Skirk is tied to the deepest turning point in his life. She trained him after his fall into the Abyss, and the game continues to define her as his master even in much later material. Their relationship helps explain a lot about why Childe treats combat the way he does; strength, danger, and the Abyss are all bound together for him at a formative level, and Skirk stands at the centre of that knot.
ZHONGLI
The Liyue arc leaves Childe in the unusual position of being outplayed by someone he clearly respects. He meets Zhongli as a consultant, works alongside him without understanding who he really is, and only later discovers how much of the situation in Liyue has been moving above his head, which leaves their relationship with an unusual mix of irritation, fascination, and reluctant regard. Childe doesn't usually enjoy being the one who was handled, and Zhongli is one of the few people who can leave him in exactly that position.
Just for Fun / Typology
MBTI - ESTP
Se is all over him. He's highly responsive to immediate challenge, physically bold, drawn toward intensity, and consistently more interested in direct engagement than in distance or restraint. A lot of his decision-making runs through appetite, instinct, and what's most alive in the moment, which fits both his combat style and his social presence.
Ti fits the colder structure underneath that. Childe does have a code, but it's his own. He isn't guided by broad social feeling or stable moral consensus. He follows a private logic about battle, loyalty, and what kind of strength he respects, and he applies that logic very selectively, which gives him more internal consistency than his surface charm might suggest.
MORAL ALIGNMENT - Chaotic Neutral
Structure is useful to him when it gives him power, purpose, or a battlefield, but he doesn't feel naturally loyal to order itself. He works for the Fatui and follows the Tsaritsa, but he plays by his own rules and isn't especially well received by the other Harbingers. His energy is much too disruptive, appetite-driven, and individually directed for a Lawful reading.
He also lands more comfortably in the middle morally than in either direction. Good doesn't fit because he's far too willing to endanger strangers, rationalise violence, and put personal loyalty or excitement ahead of broader human cost. Evil goes too far because his attachments are sincere, his care for his family is real, and he doesn't seem motivated by cruelty for its own sake. He's dangerous, selfish, and often destructive, but the centre of him still feels more like private desire and selective loyalty than malice.
Conclusion
Childe works best when both sides stay visible at once: the affectionate older brother who writes home and protects Teucer, and the Harbinger who will help trigger a disaster if it gets him closer to his goal. The game doesn't ask you to pick one and ignore the other - it keeps both in play, which is why he stays so much more interesting than the simpler fandom version where he's mostly a charming battle flirt with a secret heart of gold.
A sharper read of him leaves more room for his selfishness, ambition, and fixation. He does care deeply, but he also wants danger, wants excitement, wants significance, and is much too willing to let those wants rule him. That mix is where most of his force as a character comes from - he's fun, magnetic, and very easy to like, but he's also exactly the sort of person who can make liking him morally inconvenient.

Harbinger names and the Commedia dell’arte Analysis (Part 11: Tartaglia)
This will be the last post for this series. So I did an analysis a long time ago regarding this very subject which can be read here, but since then more information has come out, so I wanted to revisit this topic. This analysis will be more in-depth than my previous one, and I’m going to take this Harbinger by Harbinger, starting with Pierro and going down the list in order of rank (Please note: I know Pierro is probably not actually ranked save if you say he fills the role of 0). This series will also contain a fair bit of theorizing due to the fact we haven’t actually met a fair number of the Harbingers in the Genshin Impact storyline yet. Each post will also start with a brief explanation of the Commedia dell’arte and the role the harbinger’s title usually fills. As such, due to length and fears of potential spoilers, the rest will be under the cut. I hope you enjoy.
So, real quick, the commedia dell’arte is a very early form of professional theatre, that involved specific stock character roles which are largely reflected by the Fatui harbingers via their titles/codenames. Notably, the story of these plays always revolves around two actors that are not reflected by the Harbingers, the Innamorati (lovers), whom the story follows. Our Harbingers are found within the other three classes of actors though. The Zanni, which are the lower class (the harbingers from this group are Pierro, Pulcinella, Scaramouche, Tartaglia, Arlecchino, and Columbina); the Vecchi, which are often wealth and/or older characters (Pantalone and Dottore); and the Il Capitano, who are self-styled captains and braggarts (Capitano himself, La Signora, and sometimes the Scaramouche character).
Our Tartaglia, also known as Childe or by his actual name, Ajax, is Rank 11 within the Fatui Harbingers. Within the commedia dell’arte the Tartaglia character is typically placed in the same area as the characters who have a higher high social status (The Vecchi) along with Pantalone and Dottore, or as a variant of the Innamorato (male lover) of the story. His precise social status can range from low, middle, to high income with his occupation and role within the story, though he is frequently a salesman. The Tartaglia character is also often far-sighted and has a minor stutter. This stutter often results in him being quick to anger as he also often has a large number of lines arranged so that he is frequently giving long speeches that he stumbles through. One of his primary emotions, in his most basic role, is that of frustration. Interestingly, the Tartaglia character is often put in a group with the Scaramouche and Pulcinella characters as being notably Neapolitan in terms of his character’s mask style.
In regards to other levels of characterization, when placed in a more important role such as the Innamorato, the Tartaglia character is often socially awkward and may even have a lack of confidence. He is also sometimes a bumbling character and, in some cases, his bumbling serves to get in the way of the Innamorati in some way whether he is the Innamorato or a side character.
It is worth noting that, for the most part, the Tartaglia character appears to fill roles as he is needed. Sometimes replacing the Il Dottore, as a secondary older man to Pantalone’s Vecchi role, the male Innamorato to the female Innamorata, or simply as a bit of a gag character for added comedy to the story.
The Genshin Impact Tartaglia is probably the Harbinger that differs the most from his commedia dell’arte stock character, though this is not to say that he doesn’t share some similarities. Our Tartaglia doesn’t really have a stutter, which is arguably the most notable aspect of the stock character. He does, however, feign being a salesman and can be somewhat bumbling, as noted in the way he has created some messes for the Fatui (i.e. his behavior in the Liyue and even the Fontaine archon quests). Similarly, he has quite the temper when things do not go according to plan for him, as shown in the Liyue archon quest.
It is feasible that he is filling a more Innamorato (male lover) role, but this is rather doubtful due to the notable lack of any Innamorata (female lover) character to go with him. As such, it is difficult to make any predictions about our Tartaglia’s storyline or place within the Fatui or overarching plot of the game based on his corresponding stock character. Nonetheless, it is worth mentioning that he could be acting as somewhat of a gag/side character in the way he keeps showing up all over Teyvat and is arguably the reason most of the Harbingers know so much about Traveler since he seemingly won’t stop talking about them. Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that he is largely portrayed to be sympathetic, if mildly problematic, within the Genshin storyline in regard to the Traveler and thereby the audience’s perspective.
I would love to hear other’s thoughts on this entire situation with Genshin Harbingers vs. their Commedia Dell’Arte counterparts, and where Genshin writers might take these characters in the future, so feel free to comment and share!
the fact that it's implied Capitano DID notice Childe, and not only noticed him, but payed enough attention to what he was saying that he remembered Childe yapping about the traveler 24/7 and Childe only thinks he didn't notice him bc Capitano didn't want to spar with him fucks me in the head soooooo bad.
Especially since Childe's fall into the Abyss is SO easily read as a CSA allegory. Like he falls into the Abyss (sexual assualt), Skirk teaches him how to survive and defend himself from futher harm (no explanation needed, but could also be her passing on her own trauma responses in the form of Foul Legacy to protect him. I say Foul Legacy since it's incredibly strong and is a defense/survival mechanism but it actively causes him harm like a trauma response/unhealthy coping mechanism), then comes out obsessed with battle and seeking the power that was taken from him (hypersexuality in an attempt to feel in control again). Not to mention how he constantly objectifies himself by calling himself a weapon (do I even need to explain this??).
Like if you read it that way it comes across as Childe thinking Capitano didn't care because he didn't want to have sex with him/wanted him for more than his body. I mean tbf even without the allegory stuff going on it still reads as that since like- just at face value it's Capitano valuing Childe for reasons other than his battle abilities/being a weapon.
The Comprehensive Semi-Serious Tartaglia Design Analysis
because im so fucking tired of slander lmao, feel free to only read the image notes, draw ur own conclusions and add on to mine, bc this one is a doozy
Been making small observations for a while, and now that we know what he used to look like it's as good of a time as ever, so here goes nothing.
Newborn narwhal
Ajax's color scheme used to be mostly blue (early indicator of Hydro) with earth-y tones present, it's a very grounded look that ties him to his previous life and lost childhood. His undershirt splits in a lambda shape. He even used to sport a sort of scarf covering his neck in a direction similar to later looks. Can't help but note the two belts near his neck, like his self was restrained in a way. The DNA shape's connection to Sourcewater Droplets and Primordial Sea hint at his future as well as his current state of being: the origin of his problems, the source, if you will.
Wound
Now, the bulk of this analysis is dedicated to Tartaglia's base design, as it is one of the best showcases of a large amount of info hidden in a relatively simple look. Color change is a sign he has strayed away from his old self and his fate. The blue hues are completely gone, aside from his ever dead fish eyes, the last drops of his old values. Instead he got a bunch of reds, even the grays are in the red-ish register. Thus begins the cascade of bodily comparisons.
The scarf kept its basic shape from before, and is now distictly blood-red. It's flowing from a jewelry piece located where the two belts used to be. It's an open wound, that oozes with Hydro energy when he uses his vision. Light blue a symbol of purity, as seen in pure vs tainted waters of Fontaine's Phantasms, and Tartaglia is losing it rapidly.
His jacket has a white "belly" (and back), a common trait for cetaceans. It unravels in the same lambda shape along with the deep red shirt (more blood or muscle tissue), starting at the aforementioned wound. The gray streaks on pants are outlines of leg bones with 4-pointed star motif that shows up all over his (and a few other characters' (like Traveler)) outfit, especially in jewelry, like the two buttons near his collar. (The significance of this symbol has been already mentioned by other analysts, so I'd rather not to get into it, sorry)
I read the position of his mask as a head wound, not just because it's red, but because of the red jewel in his earring, it goes along with blood drop theme seen in the other two similar gems and their respective locations. The armor plates on his hips wrap around, forming a pelvic-like structure that connects with chains to a dark streak on the back of his jacket forming the base of spine and followed upwards by vertebra-like jewelry. A chain connects it to the chest wound in a rib-like direction. The scarf is held in place by a shoulder blade piece (whales have shoulder blades too).
So we got a fatui soldier uniform that manages to also depict a wounded whale-like creature. I say "like" because pelvis and femur are decidedly humanoid.
Decay
It proved to be fatal. The purple of electro delusion also extends to dark grays of the uniform, creating a rotten flesh look, enhanced by the new hue of red in his scarf and a pink-ish streak on it. Incidentally, purple in Genshin Impact is frequently used to signify curse and contamination, specifically god remains, as seen on Yashiori Island and in Sumeru desert near Consecrated beasts. The shirt is showing from under it all like bones.
Childe's left eye is covered with a red patch on the same side as the earring, could be seen as it getting covered in blood or as him losing that eye altogether. The structure of his mask has a basic shape of a fantastical narwhal, it is foreshortened from front view, as if the whale is approaching.
Lastly, I found the delusion symbol on the back of Tartaglia's vision while messing around in photo mode, as seen on the screenshot. I highly doubt it is lore, likely just an asset hidden on the model so it can be flipped while animating the Childe boss. This could be supported by looking at the back of Arlecchino's vision, which I haven't done. Dunno if this was discovered before, just wanted to share this find while I have the chance.
Remains
Foul Legacy, of course, resembles Abyss Heralds in structure, so I'd like to focus on what remains of Childe. Abyssal armor is now even more like human skeleton. The mask kept its basic structure and is also a callback to Teucer's favorite Mister Cyclops. The iconic red collar doesn't even connect to a shirt anymore but instead flows into a white scarf, then into tainted purple and finally to a sea of stars. It's a messy amalgamation of his human form that has ascended to the sky, or into the Abyss, take your pick.
I find it particularly interesting how his vision is now where the lethal wound used to be. Did it stop the bleeding? Or did is cause the wound in the first place?
Foul Legacy's color scheme included the blue hues back, closing the cycle. As for the final color I'd like to point out, its the hair. The ginger that never meshed with any other color, yet was preserved in every evolution stage as a reminder of Childe's identity. As a reminder, that all of these looks and everything he ever did - is still him.
Happy birthday, you little goober. Sorry I showcased your design as process of death on such a day lol. Go achieve the unachievable, chump.
