Memento Mori Vesta Case for Captain L Small, who died at sea in January 1821; the maker is unknown, and the date is also unknown.
This is a fascinating piece, as the successful friction match did not appear until 1826, and in 1832 William Newton patented a wax vesta in England. This means that this Vesta Case could have been made no earlier than the 1830s, and probably even later. Whether it was a person who had a personal connection to the captain or whether someone commissioned it in his honour as a memorial is a matter of speculation.
Artefacts from the wreck of the Queen Anne Revenge (1710)
The wreck of the Queen Anne's Revenge was discovered in 1996 near Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina, in just 25 feet of water, and to date more than 300,000 to over 400,000 artefacts have been recovered. Parts of the hull, keel and stern are still present at the site, but much of the material is encased in heavy concretions, which take years to open and examine, meaning that restoration and conservation work is still progressing slowly today.
Among the most significant finds are around 30 cannons from various countries, such as England and Sweden, which demonstrate how pirates reused captured weapons, as well as a large anchor weighing around 0.9 tonnes, the barrel hoops visible in the picture, and several other items that remain at the site.

The Mason’s Arms, Mayfair A calm, welcoming pub, ideal when the surrounding streets feel a bit too polished. It has long been popular with tailors and nearby shopkeepers.

A Derelict
A derelict ship is a vessel abandoned at sea without a crew or functional systems. Throughout maritime history, these "ghost ships" have drifted for years or beached, acting as hazards to navigation. Today, some decommissioned vessels are deliberately sunk to form breakwaters or artificial reefs to promote marine life.
