i was talking about this on my server earlier but i really think "cozy" is one of the worst genre labels out there in the gaming space. like people dunk on the terms "metroidvania" and "first person shooter" a lot for being uncreative or limiting but at least those are like... falsifiable descriptors. you can look at a game and go "yeah this game's mechanics and core gameplay loop generally operate like metroid/castlevania" or "yeah this game primarily uses a first person camera paired with some sort of projectile weapon" so i don't think they're completely useless. but "cozy" is just nonsense. fully subjective. i see a lot of games popularly labeled as "cozy" that share almost zero mechanical features between them and don't even always match in tone or aesthetic. hearing a game described as "cozy" doesn't tell you anything about what to expect as a player beyond maybe giving you a sort of forewarning about the fanbase and their discomfort tolerance. "cozy" is not a quantifiable metric. like imagine if someone offered to buy you takeout and asked you what kind of food you'd like and you told them fully unironically, and with no further elaboration, "i want to get yummy food." that's what hearing "cozy games" sounds like to me
Iāve always hated the term tbh. For one thing, half of the time it just feels like a way to devalue certain games + the people who play them (ex āoh theyāre not a real gamer, they just play cozy gamesā). And for another, it feels like people will just slap the label ācozyā on fucking anything! Like, people will call combat focused rpgs like the Rune Factory games ācozyā because they have farming mechanics and dateable npcs. Is that what makes a game ācozyā? Farming? Dating? An anime art style maybe? Okay cool! Fire Emblem Three Houses is my favorite cozy game. Hades is not a cozy game but Hades 2 is. What are we doing here.

okay i never actually comment outside of tags but this genre label frustrates me so much that i should, like, write an essay on it or something. i know some people already have.
ācozy gamesā are, i suppose, supposed to be games that are relaxing. that you might play while bundled in a blanket on a rainy day while drinking a cup of tea, or might listen to/watch a more chill streamer play through as background noise as you work or sleep.
thatās literally nothing. by that definition, nearly every game on earth is a cozy game to someone. is minecraft a cozy game? sudoku? but no, of course not, thatās not what youād expect to see if you searched for cozy games on steam or itch.io or something. so, without checking right now, letās think of some default cozy games off the tops of our heads.
pokopia. the animal crossing franchise. stardew valley. all great games, all unfortunately stuck under this label. so what do they have in common?
building, world customization. iāve seen very little pokopia so i canāt comment on it but i can say that stardew valley and the newest animal crossing game both have an element of resource farming and crafting involved. theyāve also all got cutesy graphics.
i remember seeing someone else (the source unfortunately escapes me at the moment) make the argument that cozy games typically tend to contain elements that are not cozy at all, but are associated with domestic labor that typically falls on womenās shoulders. this plus the ācuteā aesthetic that you rarely see in games targeted towards men places the genre in a pretty uncomfortable spot alongside things like cottagecore with a label of āhandle with care, risk of conservative pipeline insideā.
i think itās also meant to be a departure from the sexist category of āgirly gamesā that was more common when it was assumed that only boys liked ānormalā video games, except somehow it feels very backhanded and limiting. like, sure, any gender can be cozy! but why are all these ācozy gamesā just āgirl gamesā with a new label, and almost exclusively focused on such specific themes/mechanics, too?
is this a harsh criticism? yeah, maybe! but iām making it because i AM the target of relaxing cutesy games and i absolutely hate farming and resource management, and world customization is only fun for me until it gets frustrating. iām sick of nearly every cute game that comes out being targeted towards this ācozy gameā āgenreā for purely selfish reasons.
also because the newest animal crossing game feels like itās totally departed from the original tone of the series and it makes me upset.
Iāve said it before and Iāll say it again. Hippie church moms donating quinoa chips to my local food bank have done more for me materially than any internet idealist ever has.
People get pissed at me for being a pragmatist in my political ideals but Iāve been in the position where I was out of food right now.
And who helped me with that? Not people calling for some nebulous revolution. Not people telling me that the system was useless. Not people preaching at me to grow my own food. It was a church food bank partially funded by the state of Texas that some southern hippies donated a bunch of Whole Foods nonsense to.
And you know what? Iām sick and tired of defeatism. What can we get done right now, huh? Are you gonna accept something a bit better to help people right now or are you waiting for your perfect utopia to come to you?
Yeah, UBI is better than the quinoa chips. Sure. But right now the quinoa chips are stopping people from going hungry and if all we can do is get the food bank quinoa chips to more people, then I say so be it. Thatās something. Iāll almost always take baby steps over nothing.

Sweet Lolita through the years: tradi vs oldschool
Now that weāve covered the bare basics in the first part I wanted to do a more in depth post on what differentiates modern sweet with a solid mainpiece, ātraditionalā Lolita, and oldschool Lolita.
Now I do have to say this is a pretty complex topic with a lot of nuance to it and while I can give pointers and a few answers there really is no right answer. Oldschool has a lot more to do with vibes than just specific items
First I want to reiterate a point from the first post, solids were not the only thing present in oldschool so not every solid is oldschool⦠and you can even style an oldschool piece in a modern or traditional way.
What is oldschool?
Oldschool refers to both the time period in Lolita fashions early days AND a way of styling that aims to accurately emulate how people dressed at the time. Think historic and vintage fashion with an emphasis on historical accuracy.
What is traditional?
If oldschool itself is real historic or vintage fashion then traditional Lolita is retro fashion. Itās a modern interpretation of some of the popular elements from Oldschool but often watered down to be more modern and marketable. The focus is more on a nostalgic feeling rather than an accurate emulation of a time period. Traditional Lolita often involves re released dresses that update and modernize oldschool pieces. We will look at some specific comparisons but a lot of the common things changes are skirt length, fabric, lace, and even length- giving it a far more marketable and clean look. Oddly unlike both modern sweet Lolita and oldschool sweet Lolita traditional rarely, if ever, features prints. The exception being patterns such as florals, gingham, and other more simple designs.
What is modern Lolita?
Well, any Lolita that came after it shifted from a more simplistic small fashion into an elaborate subculture with rules and sugary sweet plastic jewelry. Itās how Lolita looks now. If youāre interested however the entire point of this project is to cover every era of Lolita from oldschool, to 2010ās ott sweet, and all the in between.
While a lot of the differences come down to styling (which we will go over), there are also notable changes in the garments themselves.
Hereās a visual guide I made of how these classical releases by baby have changed over time. As well as how the way they style their models has changed. Usakumya is definitely the best example but I think Elizabeth shows it well too. The different fabric, the fact it fits a much larger petticoat, the length changing. All these things lead to a more modern sleek look.
Now letās get into the meat of this topic, how to style modern versus traditional versus oldschool. Iāve broken these examples down to be really simple and a bit reductionist for sake of clarity!
Theres no one single right way to coord oldschool so for the focus of this coord i wanted to just create a very bare bones oldschool coord to show the differences between oldschool and modern at the very lowest most basic level.
Traditional Lolita often takes the rules imposed on Lolita fashion in 2010s and applies them to what would be an oldschool coord. (Ie, color balance, full petticoat, accessorizing fully,) this paired with the stylistic changes that baby and many other brands have made to modernize their releases causes a really beautiful but definitely different look. Itās much CLEANER. It has the polish that a lot of oldschool lacks.
I think a lot of the time if people arenāt aiming for just a basic oldschool look they can struggle to pick more dynamic accessories out. Based off the example coord above Iāve thrown together a little guide of items that would read as oldschool and also give the coord more flavor!
What mistakes do people often make when trying to emulate oldschool? Tea parties, modern color balance, modern looking items, modern usakumyas, over accessorizing, adhering to modern rules and over all looking too ācleanā. Wrist cuffs often look out of place in oldschool coords despite being a staple of traditional. It never hurts to just play around and see how things look.
Ultimately you can wear whatever you want I just know some people DO care about accuracy so I thought this guide may help!

This is another great blog post on this topic:
Ever since we moved away from the era in which old school lolita was simply 'lolita', there has been a fairly stereotyped idea of what old s
