Soo last night l had gotten a random message from this person I've never interacted with telling me that they 'accidentally' mass reported me for phishing and financial fraud (i'll drop the images of our convo down the line.) Apparently the actual scammer's blog was quite similar to my own which lead to the confusion and this person had also 'accidentally' encouraged others to report me.To add on to the credibility of the story they sent an image of a statement from Tumblr showing my account is queued up for deletion and l was under legal trouble. And l had to contact this guy who works at Tumblr if i wanted to keep my account and avoid a lawsuit.
So this was midnight and l didnt have my phone with me (i was on my laptop thank goodness!) so l had no means of contacting this "staff" or anyone for that matter. And l obviously rashly panicked imagining scenarios where the police would come crashing into my home, going bankrupt in court, thinking the digital footprint of this encounter will get me blacklisted and forever unemployed (talk about being dramatic 😭😭.) But thankfully l tried to be rational and googled whether Tumblr can actually do this and thank goodness l did because-
I mean l've always known there are scammers on the Internet waiting to pounce on you, but this was the first time I HAVE ever interacted with one (or so l hope-)
Now that l've calmed down, its obvious how the story is so flawed.
1.Because in Tumblr when a stranger says similar account they might mean two things- similar pfp or similar user handle. When u tag someone you use their username and I tried tagging myself and none of the other blogs which have similar usernames to that of mine, have similar pfp. Like isn't that something you generally notice while tagging someone? You're saying you yourself reported this person and asked others to report them all the while not noticing this? Thinking about it, that's such a dumb storyline.
2. Why did this person dm me and then js leave? If they found out that they had made a mistake shouldnt they have made a public post? Not to mention I didn't even see one post of them saying anything about me after scrolling deep into their blog. Judging how no action has been taken yet, they must have reported me not too long ago and mustve put up a public post warning others, where they hell were these??.
3. In the 'statement' Tumblr said they wont notify me, but then how tf was l to know that l am being reported if they dont themselves notify me? Was l to be left at the mercy and conscience of the reporter for heavens sake??
Thinking about this now kinda makes me want to laugh, but boyyy were those initial moments tense..
Anyways l've blocked and reported this person for real (look how the tables have turned) and maybe you should too (i swear l havent got the wrong person by accident cuz both blogs looked similar..)
tagging some moots to spread awareness
